We moved three blocks west of the lakes in 1959, I was in the fifth grade. At the time the lakes were a more or less experimental project to reclaim water. Today it’s a wonderful and successful project. Today I live 1/2 hour away but still return, it’s a great place to bird watch and photograph birds. The birds range form shore birds (egrets, herons), raptors (hawks, kites), songbirds (many), water fowl (migratory)… often a rare species will show and draw a crowd of watchers. To be honest I usually shy away from commenting on locations as not to encourage overcrowding but this place deserves the recognition for its success and I’m pleased to see it’s progress over 65 years.

Woah , how Santee Lakes has transformed. Moved to Santee in 1959 ( I was two) and left in the late 70s. Knew the lakes well back then. I remember when there was a large wooden raft that went across one lake with an overhead rope pully to go from one shore to the next. As a Pacific NWer, all of San Diego is far too crowded for me now. I need acreage and greenery.

Thanks so much for the interest and the comment. I'm originally from the East county of San Diego as well and yes, Santee lakes has changed quite a bit, Fortunately, they take good care of this preserve as it provides a nice place to come back 2 visit family. Im a big fan of the pacific NW as well 🫡
