Also, Οία is pronounced “ ía “ and not òia as you very well explained because in Hellenic *οι* in some words is pronounced like an i Oi is one letter in this case! *** An ancient blessing from the mothers to their sons is *οία ηώ ώ υιέ αεί εί* = ía iò ò ié aí í meaning like the dawn you may be my son for ever! The sentence is only with vowels!!! This island was called Στρογγύλη / Stroggíli meaning round in ancient times. After the massive volcanic eruption that caused the middle of the island to sunk and created this caldera, the remaining of the island got new names. The bigger islands that is known as Santorini is called Θήρα / Thíra The other island is called Θηρασία / Thirasía The small black island in the middle of the crate is made of lava and it’s called Καμένη / Kamèni which literally means burnt And the small island close to Kamèni is called Ασπρονήσι / Aspronísi (White Island) The real name of the Island is Thíra and not Santorini. Santorini isn’t even a Hellenic word. When Venetians came here and they landed on this island they saw a church of Saint Irene and in Italian > Santa Irina So, they named this island Santorini. The original Hellenic name is Thíra.

@@DM-hd4xm Thera Θήρα was the name of the ancient city in the eastern part of the island which was founded after the volcanic eruption. Stroggyle Στρογγύλη was one of the names of the island due to its shape before the eruption but the original name was Kallista in doric greek, Kalliste Καλλίστη in koine greek which means the most beautiful, cause it was considered literally as the most beautiful island of the Cyclades. Even today the village of Pyrgos in Santorini is called Pyrgos Kallistis which mean the Tower of Kalliste using the ancient name of the island.

Hi Gabriel! My husband and I were there May 20th - 24th and stayed in the traditional settlement of Finikia. In 2018 we were there and stayed in Akrotiri. Love Santorini! The random placed little churches in Greece, are in to two groups. Most of them have been erected on top of ancient temples, in order to reduce the former ancient religion presence in Greece. In the other group are those initially build in private properties which after some years became public. Keep in mind also, that until some decades ago people in villages went to the church many times a day, so a church should be available somewhere in their neighborhood.

@@carlwermar8161 Of course not the majority of churches, speaking in general. My comment was an answer on Gabriel's specific and permanent question, which he repeats it again in this video. The question has to do with isolated churches in remote or "not expected to be seen here" places. Little churches at remote beaches, capes, peaks, caves, etc. These are a part of the answer, while others are another part, and so on. So I cannot understand how all this has to do with leftists or with a hate speech against Greece.

So happy to see you back in Santorini 🇬🇷 This might be too late but Eros beach is beautiful - walk past Theros Wave bar and it’s a beautiful quiet beach (we were there last week). Kambi beach a flipping nightmare to swim… I kept slipping and falling on the large rocks but a lovely bay. One highlight was the red beach, black beach & white beach boat taxi from Akrotiti beach. €10 and you can stay on for the 1hr round trip. There is sooooooo much to see and do away from the crazy crowds, have fun!

My mother was born in Akrotiri.When i was a teenager,we used to spent several days there during summer.One day my kid brother and i were biking around the "plateia" (square?) of Akrotiri but the wind was blowing so strong that it threw us down from our bikes several times!Finally we gave up,stopped biking and went inside the house to watch TV!

The ancient ruins and spectacular views out over the airport were my favourite part of my visit to Santorini - shame that it was closed! I hope you have Naxos in your plans - I think you'd enjoy the walk to the top of Mount Zas - the highest point in The Cyclades!

I visited Santorini one year ago. Gorgeous Sunrises and Sunsets, but way too touristy for me. The island is definitely set up for couples. I am still looking for my favorite Greek Island.

I was at ancient Thira in 86! I would recommend doing a little research BEFORE visiting the site. It is what you call an acropolis or a citadel. People would live in those remote places because they felt threatened and it is a natural fortified position, so you would not need to invest a lot of time building fortifications. I also remember the black sand or black pebble beach at Perissa. I discovered that black attracts the sunlight and that black sand and pebbles get VERY hot in the afternoon. You will not be able to walk around barefoot as you would on a normal beach. If you try to, you will badly burn the sole of your feet. Better bring good beach shoes with you.

I was there 1999 in two weeks all Inclusive on a nice hotel in kamari, two person for about 1600€ totally incl flight breakfast, dinner and hotel. I remember we thought it was expensive even then, but today it is much much more expensive, very nice island, we swim at a mice beach paradise beach on the north side of the island, on the way to Oia…. I love your Greek videos. If you have not yet visited Chios , I recommend. Very unique and a little bit different island. You should visit there villages like Mesta and Pirgi, the famous monastery Nea Moni, a dessert village Anavathos, explore in Kampos, which is situated just 3 miles from the island's capital city. It's also cheap place to stay, because there is not so much foreign travellers.

We were there 2 weeks ago (our second time there) love it! Always wanted to do that walk from Ancient Thera to Perissa but thought it would be too hot but watching your video I wish we did now! Too hot? No such thing. Get a nice big hat, sunglasses and loose clothing and you're good to go. Unless you have health issues that is. Take it from a local who works all day outside in the heat.

I love this part of Santorini! I walked all the way from the airport to Perissa crossing that windy pass instead of taking the bus. It was well worth the effort. I would reccomend you to check out the Gavrilos Windmills on the hills west of Perissa. Great place to see the sunset too, amazing views!🙂

Man ! Been to Santorini once almost three decades ago. 1) Walked up to the saddle there like you, looked down at Kamaris ( but missed old Thera ). 2) Lived also in Perissa, close to the beach there for about two weeks. 3) Went to the beach there, roughly where you went. 4) Went to the lookout over the crater, maybe right there where you started the video !? And went to number of other locations, which might pop up in your next videos.. Obviously we must be connected souls or something .. 😉

I just started this but 48$ for a small salad and a glass of wine is out there, Whoa! The meatballs, rice, and wine were reasonable, beautiful places, and a decent place to live and enjoy! I moved from Boulder, CO to Thailand in 1999 and never went back, cheap here for me.

$48 included two glasses of wine and a moussaka, but I forgot to film the moussaka. Still expensive for Greece, you can easily find cheaper. But you always pay more for an epic view.

For me, living in the Austrian Alps, Greece is too dry and too hot. But for "Gabriel Traverler" who comes from California, the desert climate in Europe feels like home.

Austrian Alps are nice too! Don't forget that Greece has a lot of mountains and green nature. Ioanian Islands, East and North Greece are very green. Even the Peloponnese has a lot of Green nature regions but the temperatures are of course higher than in Austria 😃👌
