+Vanillaessence96 lol, sorry if the books realistically describe things could easily happen in a medieval setting, when people were considered adults at like 15 or less and were married off at those ages, and that soldiers and brigands raped people, all that shit happens, and this series both the books and the games aren't ones to shy away from mature themes. By the way it's not porn if it's not intended to be used as such, no one is meant to find that stuff enjoyable

Alex _ I'm still not sure what we're even talking about. Mistle and Ciri? That's indeed not child porn, they were both close to adults during Baptism of Fire. Plus, there was barely any description of any acts anyway.

a few years ago, after Witcher 3 game success, mr. Andrzej Sapkowski send his lawyer or some letter (dont remember it was long time ago :) ) with demand of something near 15 000 000 USD, because "he felt cheated". But truth is different. Before Witcher 1 game was created, mr Andrzej Sapkowski sold rights to games in Witcher world for CD Project for something like 10 000$ paid before. Not percent for games profit but one low payment, because then, he thought that games are stupid and cannot make real money, because serious people with money do not play games. After this He told not something like here that "books and games help each other" but something like "You sold games because whole world loves my books".

@@8mmkyle865 - Yeah, but both took the money for the interview. So what about doing the job without whining? Both book series became known worldwide BECAUSE of a different medium. Of course people ask about the GoT show and the Witcher games. And btw: these authors got asked a million other questions, too but those ARE naturally related to their work. I think anything else would be dismissed as "too private". Sapkowski should stop puking all over people because he's butthurt that he wasn't smart enough to realise that games can make a lot of money. It's he who effed the monetary side up.

I think he has a hard time admitting the book's popularity grew significantly after the games. I think he's just disappointed its popularity overshadowed the popularity of his books which created the world in the first place. I read that a lot of them had only been translated too after the success of the games. And yea, he definitely seems upset that the games have become more popular. The same thing happened with Chris Tolkien with the LOTR movies. He didn't like that so many people loved the movies but knew so little about the books which for a large chunk, were very different than the movies. Guys as you seem to be confused. Sapkowski was kind of pissed that Red's choose the game art to illustrate the book instead of original books illustrations. It might confuse people that the game was first and the book is an supporting franchise. When its the other way around. The book is the original and first entry into the Witcher franchise. I would argue that one should read the book first. To fully understand the magnitude of work that CD Projekt Red has done to create such a good game.

I think he got a little bit upset that CDPR didn't offer him a possibility to cooperate on writing the plot for Witcher games, that probably happened because Sapkowski is also a businessman, he could have asked for too much money in return. From a standing point of producing Witcher 1 by CDPR, an experiment no one knew would actually make any money, it was too risky. So there is no simple answer to a generic question whether he likes the games or not.

Thanks for the subs, it's cool getting to learn about the author of the books more as an American fan of them. I do agree with him that the mediums cannot clash and that the books and video games are separate, he shares a philosophy I first learned when I became a fan of Alan Moore (and his thoughts about the mediums his stories went on to be portrayed in). Obviously he's been in the business a long time doing a lot of great work and I'm really surprised that I'm only now just discovering him, even with the language barrier I've made an effort to seek out artists of all cultures. Please continue to post translations if it's not inconvenient for you. I just started listening to an audio book version of "The Swallows Tower" after listening to the books before, and each one has taught me a lot not just about writing and culture, but about a way of thinking that I never really been exposed to. I don't like to compare stories that often so I will say that what attracted me most to the style of Sapkowski's writing was that it detailed, intelligent, finely tuned (he definitely put a lot of work into the books, even from the audiobooks I can tell, I would not be able to pronounce half of the names without having to look them up and his attention to detail on the behavior of people I think speaks a lot to what changes environmental factors have on ones life. You can use Geralt's perspective, that he was ripped from his father, brought up as a Witcher, bound to be emotionless, deadly, endurant and precise. Or look at it from Cirilla's perception where despite all she went through, the hardest part of her life I've seen her face so far has been from The Swallows Tower. Personally, one of my favorite characters in the series has always been the video games depiction of Vernon Roche; a smart military mind, with his own emotional flaws or really, deep passions and his willingness to adapt to all type of situation.

I love this interview so much, THANK YOU!❤️👍📖 The Witcher books are so fascinating as a fictional world which apparently WASN'T TRYING to be as deep, varied, detailed, real-to-life or relatable as Lord of the Rings and other stories of that particular type usually are. That he did everything his books accompmish supposedly without even really intending to do so is BEYOND IMPRESSIVE, and at this point of learning about The Witcher for several years, I anticipate that Andrzej's creations, inspiration and priorities e.t.c. will forthwith be a life-long study for myself personally.

He seems upset that they didn't offer to include him in the writing process, but then says that if they did he would have refused. He has the emotional maturity of a teenage girl. I liked the games, but am reluctant to read the books considering the attitude of the author. How is one supposed to write a compelling story with fleshed out characters when he has so little self awareness.

No offense to Mads Mikkelsen, I think he'd be great too but I'm watching Yellowstone right now and I've discovered a new appreciation for Costner. I mean fuck, he's basically Geralt I'm that show already, minus the hair and beard.

I understand Sapkowski's point and his indifference to games but at the same time I hate how he dismissed them as any source of popularity for his books. Without them, nobody outside of Europe would have any idea about Geralt and there would be no TV series. I hope he's got more sales at least tho

Mr. Andrzej is a pure skeptic and the word is his written magic, but here we are talking about creating something that came out of magic, so, as a form of primordiality, both gained and kept on developing throughout all these years :) And ... I bought the books because of the games, like a lot of people, but to be fair to him he is right in the sense that the games are why they were even translated at all. It was going to happen anyway, considering his work was becoming quite popular in Eastern Europe and was no doubt being worked on for English-speaking territories such as the UK, US, and so on. People try to come in based on the popularity of Witcher 3, but they forget that the Witcher 1 was CDPR's first-ever game and it was riding on the success of the Witcher name.
@c0mplex_Ale
@c0mplex_Ale 2 жыл бұрын
They benefited from each other, of course. The first Witcher game only made enough success for the creation of a second and third because the books were popular in Europe. But The Witcher 3’s popularity is what really skyrocketed the series success worldwide, to the point it overshadows it, kind of like Lord of The Rings did. Nowadays, you are much much more likely to know the series because of Wild Hunt than anything else and Sapkowski clearly has issues with that, treating games with lot of disdain and suing the producers when it got popular, which makes it very easy to assume he sees games as an inherently inferior media, I even read somewhere he called gamers stupid.

That man has a sense for casting. Kevin Costner would've been perfect back in the 90s and Mads would be absolutely perfect now...then again, what role can Mads not play well? As it stands, Henry Cavill does a wonderful job, I love his portrayal. But I believe it only works in a series format. Geralt in a high budget movie would have to be something else entirely.

I might be true in Poland that the games become popular because of his popularity. I guess the games would never have been produced if the books hadn't been popular. Only I never heard of either him or the books before the 3rd Witcher game came out and I am sure a large number of today's fan base came to the books through the 3rd game. Then the netflix series would have given him a third boost. So he might have given the initial boost but it really only took off after the 3rd game as far as I can tell. It's the chicken or the egg kind of problem. I think the biggest contributor to his popularity is the 3rd game. He said at the beginning something like one should do what one knows about, so he wouldn't want to get involved into the games even if they had asked him. But he immediately wants to get involved in Hollywood? So he knows about making movies or tv series? Sorry Andrzej, but you seem to be extremely salty about the games.
