Why Does Geralt Call All of His Horses Roach? In today's video I will use the lore surrounding Geralt's horse roach, information we have been given about roach( from the witcher books and information about roach from the game's) to determine why Geralt calls all of his horse roach. I will also go over Geralt's preference when coming to horses and I will discuss how Geralt feels about Roach in the witcher 3.

A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

jus window dressing man. that equine alternative to fast travel has a red belt in glitch fu. elder vampire takes offense to the intrusion, but its casual friday when the horse saunters by and fuses his ass to the dark lord's face. Redanian army gonna gut you for gutting their fort? frequently, but not in front of the horse blocking the exit. THAT'S the line even Zealot's won't cross. Can't jump a fence, but he'll cross a continent to attend an orgy in a bog, Immalreth wasn't seated, He was standing down! Defeat was only possible because your horse won an actual FUCKING CONTEST. @@cindyr.522 Here's the recommended order: 1.) The Last Wish- it's a series of short stories that provide introduction to Geralt and set the scene for the Witcher 2.) Sword of Destiny- this was actually published before the Last Wish, but it's recommended to read second, as the Last Wish is more introductory. 3.) Blood of Elves- this starts the main storyline of the Witcher. 4.) Time of Contempt 5.) Baptism of Fire 6.) The Tower of Swallows 7.) The Lady of the Lake 8.) Season of Storms- this one takes place during the events of The Last Wish, but from what I understand, the events aren't as necessary to the understanding of the story, more like an optional read to finish off the Witcher. Kind of like a prequel.

Płotka - is a diminutive name from płoć - common roach. It's small fish living in fresh water, one of most common in polish rivers. Because of this is often thrown back into the water by anglers, who are waiting for bigger fishes. This created second meaning for word płotka - somebody unimportant. So Płotka is femine name, dimunitive - so it shows that Geralt have some familiarity, attachment to this mare, but at the same time it's also somebody unimportant.

I think it is just Geralt's sense of humor. He wants other people to think he doesn't care a wit about the horse, when there's evidence that he cares deeply for all of his horses. I'll posit a third theory: Geralt has named all of his horses Roach (Płotka), right? That means, logically, his first horse was named Roach. A horse he probably went through his earliest trials and challenges with. What if he was attached to this first Roach, presumably a gray mare, possibly before the Trial of the Grasses. So, the use of the same name is partly a habit, and partly a memorial, for his first horse

Ahh Roach! I think, any Polish folks feel free to correct me, than even more than 'Roachie' her name could have been translated to "Little Fish". Calling your horse that doesn't make much more sense than calling it 'Roach' or 'Roachie' or even Little Roach, but then again horses get some strange names, like Seabiscuit and American Pharoah. And fish are more pleasant that roaches, anyway. I honestly think Geralt calls all his horses Roach simply because deep down he wants to pretend they *are* all the same horse. I mean, even if Geralt doesn't get a horse eaten out from under him, he's nearly 100 years old, so he'd outlive his horses. And he honestly seems to care for Roach. So I think deep down, he pretends they are all the same animal. I'd say that's the real reason he prefers young mares, too...because that's probably what the first Roach was. Anyway, that's just my opinion formed from the books and games. Feel free to agree or disagree. Anyway, great video as always, Witcher George. Man I wish I had a youtube channel and KZbin fame 'cause I'd love to to a tandem Witcher lore video! I have so much Witcher trivia I wish I could spew onto the internet, haha

+Masterofdizaster It's sure not as obvious in the books, but I always thought that Geralt had a tenderness for his horses, first or otherwise. Just a different interpretation, I guess. And since the games take place later in Geralt's life, maybe that's why he's more outwardly caring? I don't know. The games really aren't 'cannon' according to Sapkowski anyway so..*shrug*. Just sharing my theory, that's all. You might very, very well be right, and I might be reading between the lines way too much when it comes to the books. =) Geralt sure seems to care in the games, though.
@masterofdizzzaster
@masterofdizzzaster 6 жыл бұрын
Yea agreed Geralt in games is way different and certainly much more caring than books. Hell, in books Gerlat once slaughtered defencless warewolfe, who curled up in a fetal position in some cave and waited for a sword slash because Geralt "needed money", so the difference is certainly there. And yea in game Geralt certainly cares for roach, hence the quest, not in the books tho.

+MasterofdizasterOh hell, forgot about that, but I sure remember it now.. Is that in the short story collections or the novel series? I haven't read the books in way too long. I still remember him caring for his horse in the books but like I said, it's been a couple years since I read 'em last and too many English classes have taught me to read between the lines a lot, and sometimes there's just nothing there but what you project so again...*shrug*. For me he names them all roach because he had good experiences with the name. And he talks to his horse on his journeys so its impossible for him to not get attached to it. Atleast that what I believe. Also with all the traveling and dying witchers experience, maybe Geralt just want one thing that never changes. And thats the name of his horse

From another point of view, maybe Geralt do have emotions for roach. But how many roaches must have died already, by age, exaustion, or even monsters. Geralt name them all roach so he does not have to deal with their losses, transforming every horse he ever had in only one entity, roach, his eternal companion.

Sort of reminds me of the specially trained horses of The Ranger's Apprentice book series, as in one of the extra books it was revealed that the main character's horse had been replaced by a very similar but younger one once it got too old for proper service. They'd keep the same name for their horses, instead choosing to rename the older one to something else to make the transition less jarring to the rangers, who tended to get attached.
@itzolie
@itzolie 4 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling the creator of the Witcher series wanted Gerald to be old, and jump in the timeline throughout Geralts life. They also wanted Geralt’s horse to have a character, since a lot of short stories has Geralt alone talking with Roach. The name Roach brings with it this “character” we all know and love as Geralts horse. Even if it’s not the same horse readers can feel like Roach has never left. Just a really clever writing technique. In my opinion.

Płotka - Roach in colloquial polish means also(secondary meaning), an insignificant/ unimportant person something like "small fry"
@Peter_S.Woldrich
@Peter_S.Woldrich 6 жыл бұрын
In polish if you call someone 'płotka' it means that that person is not important in a bigger scale, like opposed to english "big fish". For example if police catches a mafia boss this is a big fish but some street drug dealer is płotka (very small fish). Catching him doesn't change anything because big fishes are still operating.

i think he uses the same name for the exact opposite, he CANT let go, i think geralt got attached to his first horse, which he named roach after a nice fish, maybe he likes to fish, it seems to be a pass time done by many for solitude, it's relaxing, so maybe he named the horse roach because he liked fishing and then when he lost roach, and got a new horse, he named it roach as well, maybe it was because it's easy to keep up with, but i also suggest it represents him unable to let go of roach entirely, but that's just my thoughts on it

That's an interesting point, from other's perspectives witchers must appear to not have emotions because they are likely solitary people when they hunt dangerous creatures for a living. Getting another person involved in that kind of trade would be emotionally taxing every time they died, so it would make sense that witchers seldom have treasured companions and appear to have no emotions to outsiders. They just rarely show it or don't want to put themselves in a position of losing that person they care for, so distance themselves and thereby distance the danger that follows them from that person.

In the countryside we've always had a dog called Lisa. When old Lisa died my father got a new pup and we named it Lisa too. And yet another pup after who lives there nowadays. Therefore my explanation is the following: Naming all horses Roach provides continuity for Geralt. In many places Geralt treats his horse as a friend, sharing his thoughts with it, so when the horse dies there is definitely an emotional gap. Naming the new horse Roach makes the old horse live on and fills that gap by making it seem like the old horse was never really lost.

I always thought that the reason he calls them all Roach is so that he doesn’t have to feel the loss of each horse. Witcher’s are alone most of the time, like you said the most constant companion they have is their horse. If he calls them all roach it’s like she never left. Always there ready to carry him to the next town. Any deeper thought into the reason why he calls them all roach would force him to acknowledge the fact that it’s a denial of reality. So he just doesn’t do that.
