Funny how some singers have something distinctive like that. Like Steve Earle with the little growl at the end of some lines. Certainly Gordon Lightfoot has a signature way of singing, but I can't think of how to sum it up, it's just there.

It's not even like Ms. McLachlan is the only one who sings like this -- it's an ancient traditional vocal technique from the British Isles, & many Irish, Scottish, English, Welsh, Australian, Canadian & USAmerican singers use it. Sarah does it beautifully. Her quarter-tone variants are not "off-tone," but a deliberate choice, as used in many folk music traditions around the world. These may sound strange to the ear not used to those traditions, but it's ignorant to criticize them as though she meant to sing in a different way & failed. She sang exactly as she meant to, & millions of people around the globe still appreciate these sounds. If you are one who doesn't, it's quite possible to move on to another video without displaying your arrogance & lack of musical knowledge. Thank you!

@@starrywizdom I love Sarah and have been a huge fan since Fumbling (which I had to special order at the suggestion of a Canadian friend), but has definitely sounded better in the past singing O Canada. It just seems like her vocal strength is not what it once was. That said, Canada has a much better anthem than we do and I would wait outside in a cold rain to hear Sarah sing it no matter what. I have had the pleasure of seeing her live three times, including her all-accoustic one woman show limited tour she did a few years back.

Jose Carranza Nah, in Canada the labor party distorted the original national anthem. It’s a big controversy in Canada. And lines are being drawn with some singing the original anthem and some singing the new “politically correct” version. Imagine if a President would remove the stars of the American flag because they represent individually in states. That’s the equivalent in this circumstance.

I was just curious why you would think so... The original lyrical line was "Dost all of us command", and was supposedly changed in 1913 for whatever reason, then kept to honour the boys who volunteered to fight the Great War for whom many made the ultimate sacrifice. Granted, that maybe a just reason. However... First, the lyrics' recent reversion is to more or less its former verse now reflects today's recognition, equality, and inclusiveness of ALL of us as Canadians. Isn't that important? Second, as for the "traditionalists" who believe "In all thy sons command" honours the boys who stepped (and the many who died) in The Great War, let us not forget the thousands of women who also played a part in direct combat and combat support roles, for many also died on the front lines, as well as the tens of thousands of women who stepped up to fill the traditionally male-held jobs in farming, shipping/docks, factories/warehouses, trucking/transportation/driving, various trades (including welding, plumbing, carpentry, etc.) and vocations - all vacated by the boys who left for war. This included the jobs in manufacturing/assembly lines of military arms, transport, machinery, and related equipment. Then women stepped up to do the same in WW2, with even more now serving in combat/combat support roles. Many women served direct combat/combat support roles in the Korean War, the Gulf War, and now the war in Afghanistan. We are a different time now - it's okay that our national anthem now evolve (well, in this case, revert) reflects the proud Canadians we ALL came to be. Peace.

@@markmata2671, what's sad is you completely missed and dissed how the lyric change came to be and it's important meaning to our society. By thinking it's a "secret change", you also showed ignorance to history and parliamentary procedures, while I instead offered a kind, well thought comment. Your reply was more stupid, dim-witted, and akin to something Trump so impetuously tweets. What's more is how your ignorance shows by not taking even the time to quickly look up some history (our technology today even allows you the basics of Google and Wiki - so you really have no excuse) before shooting your mouth off. My father was a grade three education - even he would have smacked the back of your little boy head for offering up stupid remark! My nose isn't out joint... Nick Kokkas oh man, mr. social justice here knows everything! You do realize that Justin made that change because of the LGBTQ community and feminists right? He did that so they would feel “included” even though they already are. He did as a political move so more people would vote for him in the next election. Look I’m not discrediting anything the women have done for this country. I’m just saying, he changed it without even asking the opinion of the whole country, that’s not right. Now since you brought Trump into this, he’s actually been doing a great job running America. The debt they were in is finally headed in the right direction after decades of going into deeper debt. More Americans are getting jobs. The wages are also better now. Yes, there are some things that need to get better, but he’s doing a much better job than Trudeau, at running a country.

I like the anthem, but this change of lyrics was unnecessary. It feels really out of place and forced. "All thy sons command" sounded much better.
