The field mouse is actually the wood mouse (Apodemus Sylvaticus). The bank vole is Myodes Glareolus, the field vole is Microtus Agrestis and the water vole is Arvicola Amphibious. None of the voles are classed as Apodemi

We have water voles too, sadly very rare now, back in the day often mistaken for a rat, whilst swimming, persecution through mistaken identity and habitat destruction ( for progress / profit ? have decimated the indigenous population of these beautiful and fascinating rodents. very sad.

To: @lordflashget8780 - Indeed! A major problem has been the unnatural breakage of corridors between suitable habitats. Water voles are extremely territorial so a viable population needs a sizeable habitat and genetic diversity requires that these habitats are interlinked. This issue is a 'hidden' but critical component in the preservation of many species

I have 3.5 cats. .5 being a stray cat that comes in for food & lives with us most of winter 😂 One cat I had used to pass off dead things as his own. He brought home a mouse that had a mouse trap attached to it, a bird so flat (and dry) he'd clearly scraped it off the road...😳😆😆 He was also a notorious thief. Toys, socks that type of thing. We had a gallery of stolen goods hung on the gate for owners to claim 😂😂😂😂

@@oopsdidItypethatoutloud yes indeedy, they are cute. When I was in the security industry many moons ago I was called to catch a rat that had found its way into the building. It turned out to be a vole. I went to get a container to catch it in and just as I came back it ran towards my mate who tried to block it's way with his foot and accidentally stood on it. I was nearly in tears. I've tackled knife wielding maniacs and rugby tackled robbers and there's me blubbing over the demise of a tiny rodent.

Voles have tails, but the length depends on the species, Common vole (Microtus arvalis), Eastern meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), Western meadow vole (Microtus drummondii) etc, have tails a couple inches. There's even a Long tailed vole (Microtus longicaudus), that has a tail length about the size of your typical House house (Mus musculus). The Water vole (Arvicola amphibius) tail length is about half the length of a Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) tail, just to name a couple, there are many more vole species all having tails in different lengths. Was you thinking of Lemmings or Hamsters that typically have a tail length of a couple centimeter? Typically Voles are more rounder looking with a blunter face. If it has a short tail you can assume it's a Vole, if it has a long tail don't assume it's a Mouse.

We have lizard in Australia called a 'drop-tail' lizard. It's a defence mechanism, if the lizard is caught by the it's tail, it drops-off allowing the lizard to escape; later on, it regrows a new tail.

Pigeon pie was actually very common for certain families. My grandfather talked about them eating it and every other thing about how he grew up. He left school at 11 and worked since he was 14 until he was 70 with an interval to work on a boat. Pigeons were easy to catch for food because of the overpopulation when communicating via carrier pigeon became obsolete.

I love that, hearing a word for the first time then hearing it again soon after - it's called the Frequency Illusion - it's apparently to do with cognitive bias but it's a strong effect - happens to me a lot too 😄 Voles are gorgeous. They do look a lot like mice! I keep mixing voles up with shrews in my head but shrews have a much longer nose and aren't even rodents (even though they look like mice apart from the nose thing) 😄

In the UK voles are also known as water rats because they make their homes in the banks alongside rivers and other water courses, they are just as at home swimming in water as they are on land. In the children's book 'Wind in the Willows' the character 'Ratty' is supposed to be a vole. They are seen as an animal at the bottom of the food chain. In the UK in recent years their numbers have gone into a serious decline, but there are groups breeding them in captivity to release back into the wild, because they still have an important role in British fauna.

@@kmcarchive8288 Water rat is a incorrect name for the Water Vole (Arvicola terrestris), this is because of a book, The Wind In The Willows, the character "Ratty" not a Rat, but in fact a Water vole, Water Voles are a bigger Vole species, more around the size of a Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).

I used to have a tiny tortoise, shell, female cat It didn’t take her long to find out that she could attack dogs and win We had to look after my friends German Shepherd for two weeks he was big, but young and they had a cat at home. She tortured him When he realised if the cat was about not to move She’d walk past him, daring the dog to move when he wouldn’t. She jumped onto the chair and jumped onto his back with claws out. My friend picked up the dog a few days later he said for some reason the dog won’t go anywhere near their cats anymore 😂😂😂
