"The Shadow of Your Smile", also known as "Love Theme from The Sandpiper", is a popular song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel with the lyrics written by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced in the 1965 film The Sandpiper, with a trumpet solo by Jack Sheldon and later became a minor hit for Tony Bennett (Johnny Mandel arranged and conducted his version as well). It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Sarah Lois Vaughan (/vɔːn/, pronunciation respelling VAWN; March 27, 1924 - April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer.
Nicknamed "Sassy" and "The Divine One", she won two Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and was nominated for a total of nine Grammy Awards. She was given an NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989. Critic Scott Yanow wrote that she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century".
Sarah's accompanied by Bob James (piano), Herbie Mickman (bass), Omar Clay (drums) Recorded live in Sweden, 1967.
The shadow of your smile
When you are gone
Will color all my dreams
And light the dawn
Look into my eyes, my eyes, look and see
All the lovely things, you are, to me
Our wistful little star
Was far, too high
A teardrop kissed your lips
And so did I love
When I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I'll will be remembering
The shadow of your smile
Our wistful little star
Was far, too high
A teardrop kissed your lips
And so did I
Now when I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I'll will be remembering
The shadow of your smile
Now when I remember spring
All the joy that love can bring
I'll be remembering
The shadow of your smile
The shadow of your smile
The shadow of your smile

She can do whatever she wants and she is very inventive. Let’s talk about range also. And how much control she has way up there at the end and so softly instead of loud. It’s like sculpting or painting. The detail is amazing! And every time it would be different.

Sadly, we now have to fight them in our own country. With the loss of the Greatest Generation, the Americans who gave their lives fighting against fascism and Nazis would be so disappointed with Americans now doubting elections and their government based on one man’s lies and temper tantrums, his bruised ego is turning people on the greatest democracy for no reason, hypnotized by lies and QAnon, have the people become so weak minded to succumb to demagoguery?

In sync with the majority opinion on this amazing performer. She had a haunting voice, yes, as few even very good singers in any genre have, a unique sound quality that cuts or coos, slices or hovers across the musical fabric. But the really breathtaking quality is her unerring pitch across daring intervals, as she invents elegant variations. Simply put, Sarah Vaughn is a musician of genius.

@@nazsansoni Over a long long career, Sarah continued to excel in jazz, pop, and American Songbook. An amazing body of work, and always growing in mastery. I particularly like her album of Duke Ellington songs on Pablo with Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Louie Belson, and Joe Pass, titled "How Long Has This Been Going On.". I particularly like her playful, often ironic, take on lyrics. But always masterly as to the music, vocalism, and integrity toward the ensemble. Simply said: great. Thanks for your comment Nazreen.

@@clarionstreet I would add that her range is incredible, maybe four octaves. Listen to the opening note, taken from the bowed bass and picked up by Vaughn, a low contralto. Later she soars to incredible heights, sliding so smoothly into the upper alto, landing precisely on an unexpected note that works perfectly. Improvisation? I suspect a good deal. Not a simple song. A virtuoso performance.

All of Ms Vaughan's eras were fire but OMG her mature voice of the 60's the tone, phrasing, timing, everything, was pure magic My mother told me that when I was a baby (in the early 60s) she and my father loved Ms Vaughan, but as my mom hated cigarette smoke (times were different back then), she never went to the clubs. So sometimes on the way home from work (we lived in Harlem then), she said my father would stop by the jazz club Minton's whenever Ms Vaughan was playing there, have a drink, and call my mom up from a payphone there and let her listen to Ms Vaughan sing. How many nickels he had on him determined how long she could hear Ms Vaughan! 😂😂 My father was the love of my mom's life (his death took him away from her too soon) so she loved telling stories like that about him.

The seemingly effortless control over her voice is noting short of remarkable. This is how you interpret a song. She has the power to overwhelm this song (a strategy used by most of today's chanteuses to terrible effect) but instead she choses to let her voice accentuate the power and emotion of the music and lyrics! A true singer indeed. And the Trio! They are magnificent. They all work together seamlessly to wonderful effect.

I am sitting here doing paperwork. I wanted something to help me finish it. And look what I got Bob James on Piano and Ms Sarah Vaughan singing. What a wonderful way to express one of my favorites? So so beautiful. That Bob James trio is just plain wonderful. If this is the same Bob James with Fourplay he can transform his style with each decade as the music changes.

She developed this method by playing piano. the voice and the instrument closely aligned. one can't detach from the other. Listen to her accompaniest on piano and see if you hear it. Shirley Horn did the same but toward the end she played and sang in the most haunting manner.

Such a beautiful song my Mother sang this in Her own beautiful style as I was growing up (in 1960"s), lots of people compared Her to Ms.Vaughan, in which it was not a stretch,( Mother did sing professionally on the local circuit New England area) with the likes of Eddie Stack Trio & The Skyliners Band, this version is dedicated to Mother Dottie-peace/love.

I was just a wee lad in the 1960's. Fortunately, my dad had worked in a record store and my mom shared his love of music, so I grew up in the 60's listening to all this real cool jazz music. Little di I know how much I this impacted me until I grew my own musical tastes, one of which is of course what is now know as dinner jazz.

You were lucky for that great exposure at an early age. I tell every parent, expose your children to great music at an early age, take them to concerts, the philharmonic, theater, it really does shape musical taste and intellect, instead of playing what’s current which all sounds the same, brain dead music.

Sarah Vaughn was the best. I love her voice and the way she wraps herself around a song and makes it her own. I regret never seeing her live.

I remember hearing Sarah Vaughn the first time. It was, I think, 1960. I sat with Greg Taylor, such a talented fellow and cadets in the Liquid Lunch…in Lexington, Va. When she sang the last notes of Misty, I lost t. What a great deep, sensual voice, and OMG! How to even put words together to describe that voice. Thank you forever, Sarah. 5:28 ❤
