I think it's the third Sarah Belle Reid video I've watched so far and I am convinced that I've withnessed a genius.

This is the first, I randomly stumbled here (as an old school string instrument person getting into a little sampling and sequencing) looking for an explanation of MPE and I stayed for the rest of the excellent, clearly presented information.

I dig it, that's a really interesting design for a controller. They couldn't have picked a better person to demo it. Top shelf.

Nice! A new Lumatone for the budget-conscious! It's good to see isomorphic keyboards getting more love. With more companies entering the space at different price points, maybe the communities for these instruments will grow and more people introduced to the ease of learning and immense flexibility on them.

I returned mine. Lack a MIDI editor was too limiting for my use case. Also when modulating with the keys axis, I too often accidentally ended up retriggering notes while I just wanted to trigger notes once and then modulate parameters. I found the knobs super wobbly and fragile. And the strip doesn’t send any MIDI. It’s a great first step though, looking forward to future iterations

Great video, Sarah! I was wondering: can you slide (pitch) by gliding from one key to another on the Exquis? I was a backer on the defunct Loom and was very much looking forward to use it to control GeoShred (specially the horn sounds). But since the Loom is gone, I am looking for an alternative MPE option. Merci beaucoup!
@AaronLevitz2 ай бұрын
Short answer is no, that's not physically possible. (The pads are tall and spongy, and behave somewhat like joysticks. Sliding between them would push the next pad from center rather than pick up from the edge.) Something closer to Osmose's "pressure weighted portamento" feels technically possible, but not until Haken's patent expires on that feature.

I wish you've also demoed the MPE arp using the touch strip, as I would have been curious to see what you would get out of it :D

This thing is super cool and I'd love to have one. I use a C-Thru Axis-49 and it's pretty nice, but with only velocity and stiff buttons and no remapping or chromatic axis or scale lights, it's pretty awkward sometimes and not very expressive. The Exquis fixes all the flaws of the C-Thru.

I love the isomorphic keyboard layout but i can't help myself, in my ears i never ever heard any mpe performance that doesn't sound like torturing cats. Is there a simple way to deactivate mpe and the x and y achsis and use the exquis just as a simple midi keyboard with aftertouch and a special key layout?
Ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. I saw you few years ago explaining MPE with sensel morph. What’s the advantage with this one? I think you also may know Lumatone controller that excels in its use on microtonal tuning Cheers!

I've been using mine for a few days. I have used it with Surge XT and VCV Rack. While VCV Rack has a plugin from Intuitive Instruments for microtonality with Exquis, it doesn't affect operation too much. The keys are recolored, and one of the scales has a few double-flat keys, but that's it. I am really disappointed in regards to microtonality. Otherwise it's OK, and it's better than the Keith McMillen keyboard.

Can't MPE work with any miltitimbral synth? So like from the TX81Z in 1987 to the XV-5080 or Orbit-3 around 1999 was much better MPE support than anything modern. In the late '90s everything had a separate MIDI B bus so it could play 32 parts instead of 16 😂
@SsgtHolland2 ай бұрын
I'm sure it is an interesting controller, but to my ear, the sound you made with the Hydrasynth is just terrible abrasive noise. Shame, because it can do such nice, subtle things with PME and aftertouch.
