In a Documentary I saw about the making of the album on the BBC they explained that the final verse didn't exist until the day of the recording. Paul Simon wrote the song to just be a quick album track about friendship, that's all he wanted it to be. The Producer and Art Garfunkel said with an extra verse it would be a number one single. After some time arguing Paul agreed and went to write another verse. Also the song was going to be mainly sung by Paul but while writing the last verse Paul heard Art singing it for rehearsal and told Art he was going to be the main singer when they recorded it. The rest as they say is history......

In a way, this gorgeous song marked a point where the innocence of the 1960s ended and the jaded reality and growing distrust of the 1970s began. The Beatles broke up right around this time, The Who made the leap from a top singles band to the powerhouse they became, The Rolling Stones closed the Brian Jones era - replaced by Mick Taylor - where the band echoed The Who's jump into the upper echelon of the greatest bands, and a time when Richard Nixon became US president - an administration rife with corruption and Nixon's prolonging of the Vietnam war so he could get the political power he craved. Bridge Over Troubled Water not only helped to close an album, it closed an era.
