There's no substitute for great songwriting. Paul Simon even admits that when he wrote this, he instantly recognized he tapped into some brilliant, if not divine, inspiration

This song is about someone who selflessly offers themself to another. Such a selfless act(even in song) touches something deep within us. It is something right and we know it. We love that. It is that love that brings you to tears. You get to feel this. And Art Garfunkels powerful voice tops it off.

They are indeed the original singers, Paul Simon wrote it. If you want to listen to more Simon and Garfunkel I'd recommend "The Boxer", "Cecilia" and "I am a rock". For out of this world harmonies have a listen to their "Scarborough Fair/Canticle".

Stick with this, the original #1 hit, Grammy award for song of the year [late 1969 release] given for year 1970. Art Garfunkel sings this, Paul Simons joins on the harmony in the bridge. it was sort of an anthem to the end of the turbulent 1960's. You won't get songs like this anymore. Larry Knechtel studio musician, invented and played the piano accompaniment...just brilliant. 100 years from now new people will still be discovering this song because it is a total master piece. My generation will be speaking to them from the grave through this song.

THIS is what a reaction channel is supposed to be. An honest reaction to the music, without all the analysis and diagnosis and the trying to figure out what genre it is or what instruments are used. Music is meant to be FELT, not ANALYZED, and this woman gave us an honest reaction. I will be subscribing to this channel.

This song I’ve been hearing it for over 40 years and until my mother passed it’s when I found and felt its meaning for the first time… we had such a hard, hard but loving life… my sisters and my mother where I had to be the pillar (represent the brother and father as our dad was always absent from our lives..) mother and five of us sailing the troubled waters of the storms (so many…) jumping from Nuns ‘homes’ to foster caretakers to finally living in the streets and for some miracle being reunited again when I turned 17 back in Chicago. And then seeing my Mother attached to a lift chair for the last 6 years of her life in and out of hospitals suffering from respiratory sickness (copd) having to carry a tank of oxygen and finally passing at 79 last January 2022 when coming home to ‘surprise her’ with a new electric sofa and a bag of food to cook her favorite dish and spend a sunny Sunday just to find that she had passed 2 hours before I arrived at her place, cold, rigid and gone… I guess she got tired of that poor quality of life she had in her last 5-6 years and decided to move on… “sail on Silver Girl, sail on by, your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way…” are the hardest and sweetest words of that song… We love you dearest mother and friend…❤ I’ll be sailing right behind you soon enough to push the wind behind your sails on those troubled waters… Ruddy, your Son.

This was one of THE albums of the decade, and I think one or two of the year 1970.. I'm 66, and my older sister bought this album, and I truly don't think we played much else for a few days. The whole album is fantastic . Our parents were 15 and 17when they eloped while my Dad was on Thanksgiving furlough in 1950 during the Korean conflict, so while the harder rock they didn't care for, ones like this bridged the gap.(no pun intended 😊) So we could play it on the expensive, hands off, 6 foot wide console stereo😅😅 that was in the living room and just as loud as we liked. And our family listened to music constantly. This one stands the test of time. Great reaction. You wondered why you were crying. I still cry each time I hear it..I think it's because we all might either have had someone this close, who cared for us this much, or we want someone to love us like this❤😢 Edited to say I enjoyed your reaction reaction and wish you would react to Sounds of Silence , Homeward Bound, and The Boxer(by them.. they are the original)These are tearjerkers but very storytelling in the lyrics.😊

I read of one weird interpretation of this song, that its about drug use (e.g. "Sail on, silver girl, sail on high" is the hypodermic needle that is injecting heroin into the user. "All your dreams are on their way" (the heroin high is coming). "If you need a friend....."I will ease your mind..." (Heroin). It kind of changes the tone of the song. However I never fully bought this interpretation. Mainly because despite being recorded during the drug drenched 1960's-70's era, S & G were not drug users, nor promoters of drug songs (Unlike The Beatles and Stones who were occasionally).

You've made a mistake a lot of reactors do - your personal vocals are at least twice as loud as the song. If I want to hear the song at a listenable volume, your voice comes in almost loud enough to be similar to yelling. Makes for an unpleasant experience - I stopped listening 44 seconds into your video. Please fix this on future vids...
