Struggling with mental illness can be helpful or harmful if you're looking to work in the field. I'm saying this mostly because it's a very taxing field, and if you're not properly equipped to deal with the different things you'll be learning and people you'll be seeing, you will most definitely be burnt out and may cause harm to your clients. Even if you don't have a mental illness but you're working in the field, it is 10000% recommended to be seeing your own therapist. You can't give if you're not receiving your own relief and self care!

Sure but I think it might be a bad idea to arm people who have been clinically diagnosed with psychopathy or sociopathy with psychology qualifications where they may (knowingly or not) cause damage to other people. What do you think? Not sure if I sound ignorant or not - please let me know!

Do u mean one who has some sort of psychological illness would need to prepare their mentality in this field?
@AshleySmithYT7 жыл бұрын
I don't think someone with psychopathy or sociopathy will get a job in psychology, they lack the empathy to help anyone anyways and that's the biggest job requirement.
@AshleySmithYT7 жыл бұрын
They should. Any one who works in this field would need to prepare their mentality for this field. You can have a mental illness and have a role in this field but it does need to be managed.

I always hear "How are you gonna be a psychologist if you have social anxiety?" and it's often made me doubtful of whether or not I can help others... but I know that since I have experience with it, I can help another even if I don't always help myself. Oh by the way, if you could do a video on the process of obtaining a BA or BS in psych and then a PhD or PsyD, it would be very helpful as I'm in the process of graduating and looking to go to grad school. I think a lot of people will benefit from that, especially those that are interested in psychology but don't really know what it's like. The internet offers only very basic information on this career, and not really going into depth in what is required and such!

Hi! This is kind of random because it doesn't really relate to the topic of this video, but I remember you talking about how you want to be a school counsellor (I believe it was in the 13 reasons why video and I think you might have mentioned it in some other ones as well), and I just wanted to tell you this: Okay first off, I'm very interesting in psychology and I LOVE your videos. But that isn't my actual point. I'm 15, soon 16 years old, and I've been struggling with mental health since I was 12/13. School has played a major part in me, well, surviving, but my counsellor wasn't all that good.. And it made me think of how badly I wished I could've had you as a counsellor. You seem like such a genuinely nice, cool and let's not forget educated and smart person who'd genuinely care about the kids you'd work with. If you do become a counsellor (which I know you can definitely achieve), those kids should feel very lucky. That's all, have a nice day!

Hai there Kovu, i experience something similar to you where the school counselors are shitty (partly because most of them are teachers who move to the counseling office section and be school counselor without proper psychological training and courses) and i couldn't trust them. What you can do is to find another counselor nearby if that is possible as if one counselor couldn't help you then it is ok to move to another as human will be human and they are not perfect. We just go to the best version. I hope you will do well and be well

I love these kinds of videos! So informative and entertaining. Would love if you did a series on that. Also, I wanted to ask your opinion on the duration of psychotherapy. Personally love this video. Also commenting that here in Australia it is vital especially in University to have hours of experience in terms of placement. Like you said. It however bothers me and my class recently that an educational facility I'd attended recently only just made up their mind again after countless backward and forward about making placement compulsory or optional. Now that the class and I will be graduating in the next couple months, we're concerned of the approach that they made their mind up on. Which is that they made it optional to have placement. Worded it in "Oh you don't need that for this certification". The most of us are questioning the pressure they'd put us under all of this time at the college. And now people will go in and come out with "stars upon thars" but not knowing what to do when they finally get a job in the counselling field. Just a concern. I'll stop there so I don't ramble too much further. Thank you for all of your input and wishing you all the best when it comes to you finally getting out there! Congrats on your studies and keep going, Sarah! xo

I think the whole personal investment factor in going into clinical psych is a tricky line. I'm currently in a PsyD program and I can tell you that maybe 90% of the people in my cohort (myself included) have some sort of personal reason why they want to be a psychologist. I'm probably one of the few people who haven't personally been in therapy yet. I know people that have been diagnosed with a mental illness and are taking medication who are doing great in their classes and I'm confident will be competent therapists. I also know that there are people in my cohort that are highly personally invested in every client they see and have issues with boundaries (even with professors) that's really concerning. I think it's not so much that you have a label of a diagnosis, but how you view it and how managed your symptoms are. That being said, if you know that you're emotionally distressed and incapable of seeing clients, then it completely on you (legally, ethically) to be able to recognize that and stop yourself from doing harm to your clients. I would have very little sympathy for any one who went to get a graduate degree (masters or doctorate) and did not keep an eye on their symptoms, and I think that's where most of the concern from other professionals comes from.
@thesocialnerd7 жыл бұрын
Also, grad school is grueling. I can't tell you how many weeks I've gone with 5-6 hours of sleep on average. It totally sucks up all you time, energy, and money. If you have symptoms that are really closely tied to your sleep patterns and things like that, this might be something to take into consideration.

awesome video, you should talk in other time on how we can detect if someone else is suffering of schizophrenia, because from people who doesn't have that illness it can become harder to identify it, cause you can say that the person is just over reacting to some situacions or that he is just paranoid cause he always been like that and it's not a big deal, many people can minimize or search for a logical reason when it is a real symptoms, and like you say on this video, sometimes there is a misunderstanding about what the illness is really about, (sorry about the english tho, i'm still learning, i'm not a caveman i swear) love you

#4 Ive actually heard the opposite, that if you ARENT mentally ill, you cant work in anything having to do with it because youre "neurotypical". I'd love to hear your opinion on that--personally the word neurotypical, especially as a blanket term, ticks me off (because no one's brain is "typical" or less "mentally ill" than someone elses just because they dont have the "common" mental illnesses) Anyway, both ideas are complete bs. Having a mental illness and being able to not only deal with it but help others? Thats kickass.
@skellingtonMCR7 жыл бұрын
To be honest I think maybe you've heard or the people you talk to are using an odd definition of neurotypical. Generally it means no mental illnesses at all, no disabilities based in the brain, and not on the autism spectrum. So no one with a mental illness would be called neurotypical. I've never heard anyone say that you can't work in mental health if you're neurotypical, but that you do have to be very careful because the fact that you haven't personally experienced it could lead you to be a little insensitive.

One of my friends said: they don't care about you until it's too late) -Anorexia is a body type -Anorexic people don't eat -Vegans are just masking anorexia -You can cure anorexia by making the person gain weight -There is something you can tell an anorexic person to make them get better If you have more ideas, comment down below!
