The major issue for all Mouth breathers is that their MINUTE VOLUME breathing has changed. Just like when people over eat they become over weight, When people OVER breathe - eg mouth at rest, chemical, physical or emotional stress or lack of awareness then gradually over breath more and more. The community and Medical world does not really get this. THIS is what causes asthma , THIS is what causes snoring and poor sleep, THIS is what causes blocked noses and increasing allergy reactions. THIS is what causes the "feeling of not getting enough air" These techniques of Sarah's, though well meaning, will NOT convert people to Nasal Breathers. The ONLY way to correct this is to reduce or reset the MINUTE VOLUME breathing. If this is done correctly it matters not if you have deviated septum, reduce allergy reactions, eliminate asthma and sleep apnoea and correct the dental issues. The Buteyko Method if taught correctly (not thru video or book or Dr Google) corrects breathing in 5 consec days and then with a period of consolidation. All other treatments are symptomatic only. I know this because I have taught over 6000 people full time for 10 yrs. Brian firthb@gmail.com

Sometime the reason people don't get enough air through their nose is due to 'swollen turbinates'. The nose's bony divider (septum) has 3 ridges in each nostril that run front to back, and which are covered by fleshy nasal lining. With a cold or allergies, this lining gets swollen, but sometimes it's swollen all or most of the time without these conditions. Focusing on breathing through your nose for longer periods, or using a nasal CPAP mask, can help shrink this tissue and improve the airflow. If this does not work, your doctor may recommend surgery, where an RF probe is inserted into this lining, heating it and turning part of it into smaller-volume scar tissue (mine once suggested this procedure). In my case, a CPAP 'nasal pillow' mask did the trick, and I can now breath through my nose for long periods. However, I'm still a mouth breather when I sleep due to the lifetime habit, so to use my nasal mask, I have to use a chin strap and tape my lips. I came here hoping to learn how to stop my mouth breathing without all that contraption, because my nasal pillow mask really is the most comfortable and least painful I've found. A full face mask causes me facial and front sinus pain, plus leaks a lot due to the shape of my face. I've tried the tongue-on-the-roof-of-the-mouth thing, to no avail so far -- I always wake up with the CPAP air pressure blowing out of my dry-as-the-Sahara mouth.
@wilson72622 жыл бұрын
I’m afraid a CPAP mask does not directly address the problem, surgery is the only way. And as to break the habit of sleep mouth breathing, once surgery is completed and patient recovered, used duct tape to tape the mouth shut at night to encourage nose breathing. This is important as the most important time to make breath is when sleeping
@preetimittal2123 Жыл бұрын
Did you still use cpap...and your turbinates are shrink now???...please reply my father is having same problem
@JusBidniss Жыл бұрын
@@preetimittal2123 CPAP did seem to help me overcome my swollen turbinate problem. The positive air pressure and the use of a nasal-only mask choice helped enough air flow past to keep down my nightly incidents of apneic episodes. I'm not sure I could say how much my turbinates have shrunk, and I never got such a measurement from my doctor. I used to suffer from a lot of sinus headaches back then, partly due to the swollen turbinates. I have a lot fewer sinus headaches now, usually only during colds and such. So overall, I'd highly recommend CPAP, and a nasal mask in particular, assuming escaping air from the mouth can be controlled.
@weobeyjesus45656 жыл бұрын
To unblock my nose I gently squeeze the ends of my nostrils and it opens the airways. Stimulating the nerves seems to open the airway for some reason. I only need to do this occasionally. Sometimes it lasts for days or weeks. I had one nostril blocked and after doing this it is more open than the other. It works for me. It could work the same way as reflexology, I do not know.

Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "is breathing through your mouth bad for you?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Cenatthew Harrowing Cure - (search on google ) ? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to end your sleep apnea problem without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my colleague got amazing results with it.

What about when you can breathe through your nose during the day, but you clog up at night? Why does this happen? The minute I lie down to sleep, my nose blocks. It's so frustrating.

Hi Sarah great video, i am a trumpet player i breath trough my mouth while playing the trumpet(to take air), i have been playing for a long time, i have caught myself lately breathing trough my mouth and i felt my physiology have changed similar to the description of what a mouth breather is, do you think breathing through your for a couple of hours a day (while practicing the trumpet) will turn me into a mouth breather? thanks for your time.

How does one "rest" the tongue on the roof of the mouth? The gravitational pull will always act upon it, isn't it?

I breathe through my mouth because I feel like I’m getting a lot more air into my lungs than breathing through my nose also I can only breathe through one nostril
@Dang_Lin-Wang4 жыл бұрын
your nose has shut down that nostril to try and regulate your oxygen /co2 levels. Close your mouth and put your thumb over the unblocked nostril and only breathe through the blocked nostril. You will get to an acute air hunger level but the nostril will slowly unblock when your nose realises that's the only source of air. Try it...

I would also recommend to learn how to be a DEEP breather breathe through your diaphragm (stomach) not your chest. We start out as children being deep breathers but then as we age we grow a habit of being shallow breathers (breathing through our chest. So not only is it important to breathe through your nose but also make it a habit of breathing through your stomach.

I'm 55 and I seemed to have developed this lately and I don't know why. I'm healthy but going through heavy metal and parasites detox. Could that have a bearing? I have a well formed face so I don't think this has been a childhood problem. During the day I always breath through my nose and I am not congested... however I wake up and I'm aware that my mouth I open. I'd appreciate your thoughts and I'm going to do as you've suggested herr. I've looked into the ice man breaths and I'm starting to employ those techniques as well. Thanks very much for your video

My son has been a mouth breather for years, then a doctor also said that he has a large tonsil, now is it because he’s a mouth breather his tonsil become bigger ? Because when I asked him, he said he actually can breath through nose, but it becomes a habit to breath through mouth. Should I do surgery on his tonsil?
