I had MMA surgery in May, and had my first MYO session last week. Yesterday I was wondering about the specifics of the cheek puffs my therapist taught me last week and Googled it - that's when I found you and I'm really glad I did. Although my therapist explained and demoed both that and the tongue clicking, it was at the end of my first (long!) session and my head was pretty full by that point. Your explanations and your model's demo (I don't know how to spell her name) helped clear it up. I know I still mouth breathe at night because I wake up with a very dry mouth. The surgeon has been telling me to be patient, but I can already see that it was smart to listen to my DDS and start with her MYO therapist. This will definitely help (along with a frenuloplasty some time in the near future), and 30 years (!) of horrible daytime sleepiness will finally end! I'm sure I'll be coming back again and again to your videos to augment Cassie's (my therapist) sessions. Thanks!

I contacted a speech therapy place because the website showed that a co-owner was a certified myologist. However, they assigned me a speech therapist who isn't, and who doesn't seem to know much about it. I'm not happy with the $3/min "treatment" and am thinking to just use the money at ARK or Talk tools and try to help my 2 yo myself

How much time does it usually take on average for your patients to learn for correct tongue posture ?
@sarahkh123 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it usually takes about 3-6 months for people to do it consistently, and even longer for it to feel natural and become subconscious. It takes time :)

There are different ways to click with the tongue. One doesn't do much of any suctioning to the roof of the mouth.
@rist982 жыл бұрын
In fact I think the kind of clicking that is done in the example, isnt that useful for training suctioning. Pretty sure everyone can do that kind of clicking. I think that click happens via striking the tongue to the bottom of the mouth. You can see her tongue going down, and striking the bottom. But the kind that I think is more helpful is forcefully pulling the suctioned tongue off from the roof of the mouth, and the sound happens via the vaccum getting rapidly filled. They sound clearly different. There are clicking languages that distinguish between these sounds.

Coordinating and controlling the muscles of your tongue could potentially fix your lisp. Otherwise, contact a speech pathologist and make sure you are not tongue-tied!

I can do a lot of these exercises somewhat easily. I'm getting my tongue released next week at 27 years of age. Are there certain exercises I should really be focusing on before and after my procedure? I've been looking them up, but it's hard to find a solid guide to what I should be doing. I've been mewing for the last 2 weeks. I think if it's even possible for me, and my tongue has been feeling less and less tired from doing it. I've been trying to do the open mouth tongue side to side slowly exercise, but the skin glides over the top of my bottom teeth, so I'm not sure if it's even effective for me. If anyone knows of a pdf file or video that really gets into it that I'd be very thankful, I'd even pay for it. I wish my parents would have listened to the docs when I was born so I could have reached my genetic potential but nothing can be done about that so I have to focus on what I can do now.

I can click, but I can’t hold my tongue to the roof of my mouth yet... I know I need practice,, but sometimes I wonder… The roof of my mouth goes really high and narrow. Even dentists and dental assistances have commented on it.
@sarahkh123 жыл бұрын
It takes practice but you'll get there. If your palate is super narrow you may need to get some sort of expansion. Just find a dentist who understands tongue space and tongue function :)
@rutht20233 жыл бұрын
I am 58 years old. I had a palate expansion a year ago. It was easy and painless. It just took time. I can finally fit my tongue into the roof of my mouth.
@margaretelizabeth5553 жыл бұрын
@@rutht2023 Thanks for commenting, Ruth. I had a dentist tell me he didn’t think they could expand the roof of my mouth at this age. I’ll be 55 in August. It’s encouraging to hear you say that. I guess I just have to do a little research to see what’s available in or around Sacramento, CA.

The real reason to learn this is because if you can't click your tongue, you can't communicate with your horse 😏 No but seriously, *this* is why some people can't cluck to their horse!? Always baffled me how some people can't do it 😅
