Sarah i have to say you are a breath of fresh air. Your honest straightforward and a real hoot to watch and listen to. Also i want to thank you for your service in the USAF. Nice how-to video. I like that you called out the packaging, as it seems that the bulb manufacturer put more effort into it then one would expect for an automotive bulb. Plus the little bit of historical background on the origins of yellow headlights was a nice touch. Keep up the fine work!

I just converted my 2018 Hyundai Sonata's low and high beams to LED last weekend. Both bulbs are 9005. With the location of the housings and all the stuff around them I actually had to drop the bumper cover and remove the headlights themselves to install. Took about an hour total. Easier than I thought. Big difference. I won't give you the company that I got the bulbs from in case you didn't want to have a different name than Auxbeam on the video. By the way........great channel. Love the presentation, even the "ackwardness" you display in the videos is endearing. Keep up the great work.

Excellent review! Very helpful as I haven't really heard of any US based merchant that has LED headlight replacements for under a couple hundred dollars. Couple of things I want to share with the idea of trying to be helpful as well. DRLs...Daytime Running Lights, are meant to be used during the daytime, not at night. I work nights and every night I drive to work I see at least 3-4 people driving with JUST their DRLs on...no tail lights at all on a dimly lit freeway. The reason your halogen lamps were so far gone is because the typical way of implementing DRLs with several car makers is to use the normal High beam lamp at reduced voltage. The problem is that how the halogens work is by higher heat vaporizing the surface of the metal filament whose tungsten atoms then combine with the gas...once it cools the atoms are redeposited onto the filament. Operating as lower powered lamps (DRLs) means the tungsten doesn't vaporize properly and combine with the gas but instead forms a film on the inside of the bulb (which is quartz btw, not glass) which then begins to soak up the much higher levels of infrared energy (heat) until it literally melts through the envelope. Auto makers really need to stop using this cheap way (for them) of creating DRLs and just use separate lamps, preferably LEDs. The new lights look awesome and I thought you did a great job of reviewing them. The yellow lights used in France did help identify locals from the invading army but it wasn't the intended use. They originally were used for the lower glare the road lights (known as high beams here) had on oncoming drivers. It's called selective yellow and yes that's actually the name of the particular shade of yellow used on headlights and fog lights. The filtering of the blue end of the spectrum is supposed to reduce the dazzle effect in fog, rain and snow and increase our visual acuity. It turns out that white light wasn't so dazzling to oncoming drivers when the lights were aimed correctly. Uugh...TLDR: Turn on your headlights at night, halogens aren't designed to be underpowered and yellow lights were meant for safety. Probably be ordering a set of lights from Auxbeam soon, thanks for mentioning them. Came to your channel through flying sparks. ;)

I found when messing with lights on my outback, Just take the front off the car! It's only like 22 clips and a much easier process to align the bulbs with everything out! I did the highs and the fog lights in place, when it came to the lows? Different story? The first result was FUBAR? Having the headlight out gave me the result I was looking for!

I have the Auxbeam F16’s on my Taco. I was nervous about LED’s at first, but they are well worth the money! $50 is really worth. Just as she stated, the packaging is really premium for headlight bulbs and tightening with the seal needed a little more torque than OEM bulbs.

The bulb you used on the DRL is the type of bulb you should have put in the fog lights. The bulb style you put in the fog light is more for turn signals, break lights ect. That style does not project much light. The type you installed on your DRLs are higher output cree LEDs and project more light. Just some food for thought, if you ever decide your fog lights are not bright enough.

Sarah, You cannot use those Leds as DRLs. The Subaru uses a resistor to lower the current to the halogen light to reduce its brightness. By putting LEDs in which require much less current, they are still getting 12 volts and are no different than running your car with its high beams on constantly. Try it yourself, flick your high beams on and then look at just the DRL, same blinding? Yeah, at night, your gonna be blinding people. Please fix. I just recently put full Aux Beams in my Legacy, the projector lows, 9005 high beams, and H11 fogs, all Auxbeam, they are great, but I had to do the mod to disable the DRL module.
@sergeyafanasev75057 жыл бұрын
Trix Kemuel, interesting thoughts, but I think, that led driver (ie current source) should be integrated into led bulb. Otherwise, driver should be external. Without led drivers - this is very bad led lights.
@HellTriX7 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what i mean. The subaru DRL module limits current to the DRL lights to lower their brightness. Since the LEDS with their internal drivers dont take as much current, the DRL modules current limit has no affect on the LEDs brightness. Which means they are running at full power, and the LEDs she installed are not a low brightness beam, they are a high beam meaning they are at full high beam brightness even on the DRL circuit.
@mikejulien23307 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing the whole time... if it’s anything like the older subies, you should be able to just disconnect the drl resistor cutting the circuit so only the LED strips down near 5he fogs stay on.
@B95_P7 жыл бұрын
I scrolled through to see if anyone else posted this because it's exactly what I thought. On my 2013 Civic I just pulled a single fuse to eliminate my daytime running lights(I think it looks stupid, not concerned about the "safety" of it). I could tell right away what you mentioned was happening. Definitely kill the DRL if you want to continue to use LED high beams..otherwise just switch back to a halogen bulb. I actually even prefer the yellow halogen and disconnected DRL as it just gives the light cavity that yellow look all the time from the reflection of the yellow bulb. Anyway, cheers good luck.

@farmerguy397 жыл бұрын
LED replacements look great, but I've never found one that has a beam pattern and distance as good as a nice halogen or proper HID projector. And like has been stated, those LED DRL high beams will be way too bright for oncoming traffic even during the day. I got flashed a lot in bright daylight when I had some in my car. The stock halogens usually just run at half power when in DRL mode. I just used a relay to disable the highbeam DRL.
@Aaron-ot1xs7 жыл бұрын
*Packaging nerd alert* That is awesome packaging. The colour scheme and graphics make it look like MSI/MEC mountain climbing gear. I want those DRLs for my Outback, it seems to add a lot of light to the road a night, almost like a second fog light.
@thewojtek7 жыл бұрын
I believe by switching to LEDs on your high beams/DRLs you are essentially driving with your high beam all the time, as the LED doesn't care if the voltage is lowered (in DRL mode) or regular (high beam mode). I can see a separate circuit box on your LED high beam kit that takes care of this voltage difference. I might be wrong, though.
@sergeyafanasev75057 жыл бұрын
Wojtek Jakóbczyk this external box can be led driver - current source. Better to check, if it switch between hi and low, because (from the point of microelectronics) it's not hard to control current to led with different input voltage.
@Averna2227 жыл бұрын
While you are correct the high beams will essentially be on, that's only during the day time when it doesn't matter and won't be blinding people. The DRLs turn off at night so they will only be on when the high beams are turned on.
@thewojtek7 жыл бұрын
Well, the only scenario is when Sarah drives on low beam, the DRLs turn off then. But all day long she's going to drive with full high-beam power instead of low-power DRLs and it can blind oncoming drivers even in full daylight, it's just plain dangerous for them.
@HellTriX7 жыл бұрын
The lights on the inside that she calls DRLs are actually the high beam bulb area. The reflector has no shrouding so the light goes everywhere. The LED's dont car the that DRL mode has reduced voltage so are producing full brightness. This means she has high beams effectively on all the time.
@AlaskanCharlie7 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of newer cars that use the high beams for the DRL. We use to have an 04 Bonneville and that is exactly what it did, its DRL was the high beams turned on.

Hi Sarah, I have installed the latest version Auxbeam NF -X3 H7 on my Ford Focus ( Multi Reflector non Projector ) Low Beam Head light ) at first I had issue with the anchoring had to order the clips for holding the bulbs , Auxbeam Refunded 50 % for they did not provide this or had no info on this. This version comes with a glass protector on the bulbs with an additional Flims provided by Auxbeam in the box to convert the standard 6500k to 3000k or 8500k with Yellow and blue flims Respectively. I must say the product and customer service is on par with rest of the brands. Unfortunately till now I have not been able to adjust my optimal light beam focus since it’s multireflective headlight. Decided to put the halogens back and use the same on my bike. The Auxbeam Products are superb.

You do realize that the LED running/high beam lights are either “on or off” since they run on a wider range of voltage - unlike your halogen bulbs that seem dimmer than your high beams , because the voltage runs through a resistor dropping them to I believe 8volts instead of the normal 12-14 volts. So it’s kinda like driving around with your high beams on 🤣
