With these cork valve cover gaskets, its traditional to only glue the one side to the cover and leave the engine side plain. This allows reuse for a long time as your going to be checking valve lash often.

brings back memories- every 3,000 miles, Saturday morning maintenance, pulling those bails down under the back of the Squareback, adjusting all to .006 (and letting number three exhaust go a tad looser on the feeler). As the great Idiot Book Writer John Muir said: "come to terms with the ass that bears you."

Not having touched one of these vehicles since the early '90s, it's gratifying to know you can still buy new sheet metal for these engines. With air-cooled engines the sheet metal is more important than one would think.

l drove a 75' type 1 beetle from Dallas Tx to Ushuaia Argentina and back when l quit college. l drove the same bug from Dallas to the very last beach of Baja Mexico the next year and back. The car has 400+k on the original 1835cc Fuel injected motor Doug at Qualitat VW in Dallas built. Its had two new belly pans and is still a daily driver. My friend bought it and his daughter still drives it to and from college.

Great to see Charlie again and helping out too. Not sure why you are placing so much pressure on yourself with the Beetle’s completion. I certainly enjoy the rapid and slow progress stages with all your work as that is reality. Your success (my opinion) is due mostly to your delivery and not so much on huge developments; so relax a little.

As simple as these Bugs are, the assembly requires a bit of patience and often a redo since there isn't much room on some areas to do anything out of order. The new tins and clean carb make it not only run better but clean up the look a bunch too!

I realize there was no provision for the flaps in that aftermarket fan shroud, but they really do help direct cooling air even if you don't use a thermostat and wire them open, along with the missing air vanes in your cylinder tins. A shroud with a venturi ring improves airflow too.
