I have the same truck. A 1993 4.0. I'm gonna remove the drivers side much rotted out valve cover soon... I finally located one on eBay for $60, I needed to sand, prime and paint it.... Oddly, I just replaced my clutch fan and radiator, the nut came off rather easily. I used a huge channel locks to take that nut off. Further, The valve cover replacement should be way easy, compared to what you just did. LOL. Great Video. Awesome job. I subbed you.
@jimpalmer19692 жыл бұрын
Sarah, another great video, keep them coming. From what I can see from the video, gram's radiator support looks structurally sound. Don't change it, clean the rust up and maybe shoot some of the green on it before you clear coat the engine bay. Buy some of the matching green, You are going to find other areas that will need touch up. Prep them and then shoot them all at once.
@billj56452 жыл бұрын
My father owned a garage for over 60 years and we pulled a lot of motors. We always removed the fans first, but then we also had to be able to slide the engine forward off of the transmission. It helps a lot if you adjust the chains so the engine hangs level, then you can pull it straight up. Unlike the current trend of pulling engine and transmission as a unit, which requires you to remove radiator and core support, we always just pulled engine and left the radiator and transmission in the vehicle. We had a hoist hanging from a crane rail in the ceiling too.

Check the Ford service manual you got for this truck for the direction to turn the fan clutch nut to loosen it. Some were left-hand threaded. That being said, some can be so stuck that you have to cut them off, but most do eventually come off.... usually after you have cut the skin off a couple of knuckles after slipping and punching the fan a few times (don't ask me how I know that).
@paulaxford67542 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine how it would have worked as a RH thread.
@scotthill12782 жыл бұрын
The bar hanging from the engine hoist is suppose to be in line with the engine, turning the crank handle positioned at the front allows you to tilt the engine for easier removal. You might want to pull the heads and get'em checked, they have a history of cracking between the valves.

@sasha-taylor2 жыл бұрын
hey Sarah, you're gonna hate this because it damages the clutch fan nut pretty bad, but the way I usually get them off is with an air hammer and a long chisel bit. You've gotta be careful because some are reverse threaded so you need to know which side to hit, but you go down from the top and basically dig into the side of the nut and it'll break it free. It leaves a big scrape in the side of the nut but it's really only cosmetic damage, the nut isn't structurally compromised. I tighten them back down the same way. Since the engine will usually turn over with less force than those nuts take to get off it's the only efficient way to do it since I'm on the clock at work.

Back in the 90s Mazda used the Ford explorer in their lineup, it was called the Navajo. It came with a 4 L V6. I was pulling those engines out so often for oil leak repairs that I could start pulling it at 8:00 in the morning, reseal the engine top to bottom and have it back in and running before I went to lunch. Considering the job paid 16 hours under warranty, it was a very profitable job. If you were really lucky, you could get a transmission overhaul, a transfer case update, radius arm bushings and new front 4x4 hubs for a grand total of over 30 hours, all under warranty. They were my real money makers.

Some pointers Sara. Too late now, but later... Strip the motor first, intake off, front of engine bare. The engine lifting cradle goes down the center of the motor. The rear chains go to a pair of bellhousing bolt holes. Try not to bolt to where your stand will be bolting to. The front chains go to a pair of now available bolt holes. The crank handle faces front so you can balance the motor as you remove/install it. The lift chain needs to be as short as you can make it. Looking at the fan pitch it looks like it should be a lefty loosey. I'll look one more time. There is a funky wrench that will lock into the four bolts holding the pully on the pump, letting you get a more thorough application of force. With the front stuff stripped off, the engine fits the hole a lot better, and it balances a little better. With the lifting cradle as tight to the block as possible it will tuck under the dash easier.

Sarah you should plan on removing and replacing all the freeze plugs on the engine while you have it out. Ford/Mazda (B4000) were notorious for using crappy freeze plugs that would rust out over time rather than using decent brass ones that will never rust. I noticed a smell of antifreeze on my B4000 and it was from a tiny hole in one of the freeze plugs. It was near the firewall so the engine needed to be pulled to get to it. So basically you could save a ton of hassles by replacing them while you have the engine out. Also, when I ordered what was supposed to be a complete set of them from RockAuto, I found I was missing quite a few so I recommend ordering 3 complete sets of the brass freeze plugs so you don't wind up waiting for each delivery. Thanks for all you do making these videos!
