Here’s a tip from a scale modeler as far a s masking the side trim goes. Lay your tape on the area you want to mask, work the tape into the lip with q-tips and wood skewers or toothpicks. You then use a sharp x-acto knife to cut tape along the edge. It’s time consuming but probably not three hours worth.

Blue fine line masking tape is available from many sources in different widths. 3M to China, it is readily available. Custom painters use it to make curves and outlines, even pin stripes. Even Amazon sells varieties of it. I would never paint the inside of an oil pan for fear of dried paint coming off and getting into the works. Totally unnecessary. This is a very cool project and I admire your wiring skills.

This is one of the best restoration series I've ever seen - the attention to detail you exhibit is unbelievable. You're clearly a first-rate engineer, but also concerned with the aesthetics of the original vehicle design, which is a rare combination! One question - have you ever thought about building a vehicle completely from scratch? That would be amazing to watch!

I don't think most people realize how time consuming car restorations can be, it is exactly why it's so expensive if you're paying someone to do it, especially all those little things like that trim restoration. I have a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II and had to repaint all the side trim, headlight bezels, trunk finish panel, etc... Thing is it wasn't just black paint, it was also textured silver with satin black, it took forever.

A tip from the scale model making world: Liquid masking. The model makers use a liquid mask for canopies. Plus they use a masking putty when doing intricate camourflage etc. Both couldve been used on those parts, whatever they were to mask off the chrome Paint when dry, simply peel away the mask like masking tape. But, youve done it now, but you'll know for next time. Cracking mota.

Sarah, you need to look into model plane/car/ship supplies for masking smaller areas. They make skinny masking tape to get precise lines across curved surfaces. You apply it at the edges, then use regular masking to cover the rest, so you don't have to struggle with 3-inch wide strips in tight areas.
@terencehawkes39338 сағат бұрын
Sarah, I have something you could try for those panels. Paint the chrome bits on those panels with a tiny brush and Plasti-Dip. Spray the background grey then peel off the Plasti-Dip, PS. I totally agree with your hypothesis that a clean workshop inspires better work. That is a lesson I had to learn the hard way.

Well, one smart idea for painting around those kinds of chrome (or fake chrome-) on black grill type pieces is, you can paint the whole piece and wipe the wet paint right off the shiny parts before it even sets up, the smoothness makes that easy and the black will want to hang onto the rougher places you want it anyway. Might take a bunch of makeup sponges to get really picky about the edges, but if you do one piece at a time, works nice especially when it's that plastic fake-chrome you probably wouldn't want to sandpaper on.

Fast solution for masking something like the ribs on that trim: White Elmer's school glue. You can just wash it off and parts can be dipped in them, the lines won't necessarily be super straight though.
