I always thought the comments like "vampires in Twilight can be killed easily by X from other franchise" were weird, because my main issue with the book back in the days, when I read it the first time, is that the vampires are presented as totally cheated. When my friend and decided to binge watch the Twilight Series in one sitting during this renaissance to go back and forth about our first impressions, when we get to the sparkling vampires bit I really stretched the ideas as to why sparkling would make sense if vampires were killed by sunlight in the past. I was telling my friend that it could make sense that modern vampires had evolved to a point where they're skin became like a mirror to sunlight, and reflected it before it could penetrate their bodies and harm them. Their skin sparkles as a sign of reflecting said light, and may be more metallic/glass in quality, and that's the same reason why the crack and shatter. I thought it could be an interesting evolutionary adaptation if that's what the author was thinking, so vampires could now thrive in a previously inhospitable environment. Then my friend looked at as I finished my reasoning and told me "I think you're trying way too hard to make the sparkles make sense"
@SP3CTR0L1T33 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's a good theory, though.
@itseggnog20773 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you read the books, but a fun tidbit in them was that in Twilight the stereotype about vampires burning in the sunlight came about because the vampires would sparkle so aggressively that they looked like they were on fire. When Bella first saw Edward in the sunlight she was scared because she thought he was on fire until she got close to him and actually saw him.
@itseggnog20773 жыл бұрын
@@HadenBlake SDLKfnk it's not a theory it's literally in the books. Bella sees Edward and because he's sparkling so brightly she thinks he's on fire and screams.

Just a remark: the 'father' of all media vampires, Dracula, did not burn in the sun, either. There is a scene in the novel where he's seen walking around in sunlight, oggling a young woman with a pretty hat. So Edward and his family not burning up is fine - they're closer to Dracula for it.
@Khenfu_Cake3 жыл бұрын
@@cayreet5992 Neither did Carmilla (which predates Dracula), she only got a bit more languid and weaker during the day. The reason Le Fanu and Stoker didn't write their vampiric characters as burning up in the sunlight is probably because vampires in Slavic folklore (which is where the modern Western idea of a vampire more or less originated from) weren't described as being harmed by the sun either. Same with fangs; they weren't described as having those either. It's generally agreed it was Nosferatu (1922) which first depicted vampires as being harmed by sunlight and from there on out it became popularized to the point, that most people nowadays assume it's a given whenever vampires are portrayed in fiction.

I remember this one kid who looked to be about 16 telling the camera, "we don't turn into wolves, but we are descended from them..." I unironically loved that. Way to own your myths dude. There’s also something to be said ab 2016 being one of the last years there was any actual sense of normalcy. Like, everything since then has been a downward spiral. That being said, 2016 was awful and I’d elect 2015 as being the last year things felt relatively normal before 2016 kicked off the spiral towards the abyss. I remember being in the theater for the 2nd movie and when Jacob cuts his hair the audience went wild, saying "He looks so hot now!" In reality, cutting your long hair like that is for many tribes symbolic of losing connection to your culture. Some indigenous ppl were forced to cut their hair through forced assimilation. It was NOT a good thing that Jacob did that, and it always bothered me that the audience had a positive reaction to it.

I think it's also pretty unfair that people blamed kristen steward for not portraying bella with more personality because she was basically given an impossible task. The books are written in first person from bellas perspective and she is constantly telling us via the narration what she thinks and how she reacts, but obviously that doesn't translate very well to a movie.
@tss53204 жыл бұрын
exactly! also i feel like she and jennifer lawrence were both unfairly criticized for accurately acting like their characters do in their books. both bella and katniss were described as quiet and expressing their emotions inwards, which just doesn't translate on a screen.
@thedorkettereads60524 жыл бұрын
@@tss5320 I don't remember about Twilight, but a key part of Katniss' character in the books is that she doesn't have the charisma to persuade the in-universe audience to like her, and that we only like her because we're in her head. This is why they do the whole fake relationship with Peeta, but that isn't portrayed very well on film. People call her a poorly acted/written character, but really the character is just a better fit for a medium that lets us read her thoughts.

To be fair, that's kind of how it was explained.....but with the gross implication that it would likely change into a romantic relationship when she was "old enough," which since she grew up fast, was probably around the real-time age of 7. And this was treated as a valid excuse for why it's okay. So basically the conversation went like, "You just fell in love with my infant????? Gross! Get away from her!" "Noooo it's fine, I'm not love with her! ....yet. Might happen later, up to her." "Oh okay I can deal with that, but you're on thin ice." Not really as valid of a defense as Meyer probably thought it was.
