This video was created to explain the rules and requirements of the Sarawak - Malaysia My Second Home Programme. The Sarawak - Malaysia My Second Home Programme was created in 2007 to support the local economy. The programme was created to attract foreigners to come and live in Sarawak, Malaysia
The Sarawak - Malaysia My Second Home Programme (S-MM2H) is different from the federal Malaysia My Second Home Programme (MM2H). This video focuses on the S-MM2H Programme only.
This video is supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board. All details in this video are fact-checked and current on the day of upload (November 2021).

Great video! We were in the process when the applying for the (old) federal program in 2020 and we only needed one more document when the program was suspended. We don't even come close to qualifying for the new federal program, and so we are considering applying for S-MM2H once I turn 50. Great info in this video, thank you! I hope you and your wife (and baby?) are doing well.

I found this video immensely helpful and eye-opening for locals like myself. You praise us more than we deserve. Indeed Kuching is not aspiring to be another KL or Penang or any of the big cities. We are not a shopping mecca or a weekend's party getaway. Kuching is just aspiring to be her authentic self and the resident expat community adds to this uniqueness. As we always say, "People don't come to Kuching to visit, they come home to stay." :)

I'm so great Sarawak is doing their own version of MMSH. I can't wait to apply when I hit that time! I posted this link to a Global Malaysians Network that has 25.9k members. Yes , policy has just changed... both monthly income of 7000 pp or 10000 per couple PLUS 150,000 percent or 300,000 per couple in bank deposit. And the 15 days minimum stay has raised to 30 days, who knows what else in the future.

Hi GG. Greetings from Washington DC. Great Video with very useful info. I love Malaysia been to Penang Island 6/7 times in the last 8 years on extended business trip and love the island, the country and the people. Was seriously considering the MM2H and when getting closer to that decision timing with my career retirement realized the MM2H rules were made too stringent. I gather that the S-MM2H is a work around option and have some questions. 1. Under the S-MM2H, after meeting the 15day/year stay can you stay the remaining period in other parts of Malaysia like Penang in particular. I love Penang so much sure when i see Sarawak i would love it even more. Penang preferred being easy to get in and out and good air connections to rest of the world. 2. Are there good choices in ethnic Indian food and other vegetarian lifestyle options in Sarawak. 3. Can you make a video on the rental options if one were to stay in a rental and especially like the one sin Tropic city to rent. Thanks!

I miss Kuching..miss the food..my husband is a west Malaysian so I stay and work in KL..I only go back to Kuching a few times a year to visit my parents and siblings. Can't wait to retire and go back to Kuching, It's just so peaceful there and more laid back as compared to KL, going to the beach is just a 40 min drive from Kuching..I remembered those days before I got married I worked in a consultant firm in Kuching..most Fridays after work at 5 pm, my friends and I would drive to the beach and just chill, play music and BBQ..just amazing to de-stress..Sarawak is a beautiful state and part of the Borneo Island and the locals are generally friendly and quite helpful. Most of us speaks English well. For those who like music, there is "The Rainforest World Music Festival" a three-day music festival celebrating the diversity of world music, held in Kuching, Sarawak.

I'm thinking about applying. I already have an apartment in Penang and had applied for the MM2H in December 2019, but it was still pending approval when the programme was suspended. And under the new rules, it's no longer attractive at all! The 40,000 Ringgit monthly offshore income isn't a problem now, but the effort it takes to earn it means it's not really feasible for me to spend the newly required 90 days per year there! And I was hoping to have the MM2H to transition into retiring in Penang, but at that point the 90 days requirement will stop being an issue, but at that point the 40,000 Ringgit monthly requirement will be prohibitive, especially since they seem to like job or government pension income a lot more than investment income. And keeping 1 million Ringgit in a low-return fixed deposit is for the birds! The S-MM2H is a lot more doable, including the 15 day annual residence. And being able to live anywhere in Malaysia so long as one maintains those 15 days per year in Sarawak is a nice feature.

The low interest is not THE problem. The big problem is currency inflation. Over five years, the ringgit is likely to decrease in value by at least one ringgit as compared to the US dollar. So, today it is 4.8 ringgit to $1 US. So for MR 150,000, you have to deposit $31,250. But, five years later, if it is MR6.3 for $1 US, then your money is only worth $23,809 (150,000 divided by 6.3) which is a $7,441 decrease in value.

Hi Global Gibbon! I really wonder if the Sarawak-MM2H programme is a good deal or not 🤔 I am myself very much interested in this visa and I have done my own research about it. What I found out lately is that an unavoidable clash is bound to happen between Kuala Lampor and Kuching. As you know the federal territories MM2H programme is now unreachable for most of us. Only the super rich foreigners can apply for it. The Sarawak-MM2H visa is far more accessible and allow indefinite stay on peninsular Malaysia. In short the S-MM2H makes the federal MM2H impotent. Will Kuala lampor tolerate this situation when Malaysia reopens to foreigners??? Many people say they won't! I know that Sabah state is about to have a similar programme too( another blow for the federal government). I would like to have your take on the matter...is it right to worry about this matter or are things really uncertain regarding the MM2H programme as a whole??? Thanks for your reply By the way...thanks for all your instructive videos👍 Phil from France
@GlobalGibbon
@GlobalGibbon 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Phil! Thanks for your comment. So, Sarawak and Sabah are part of Malaysia but they have their own immigration laws, and many other laws. This allows these two states to make their own rules, as separate states within the federation. I don't believe that the "rest of Malaysia" can do anything about this. If Sarawak grants you a visa, you can be here in the state but also in the rest of Malaysia. When you travel from Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur, there is no immigration check-point. However, when you travel in opposite directions, you will get checked at the Sarawak border. I have spoken to the Sarawak Tourism Board, who helped me out with this video, and they said nothing will change about S-MM2H anytime soon. Personally, I think the S-MM2H visa is a great option for anyone that wishes to live in Sarawak, or in the rest of Malaysia. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me at globalgibbon@gmail.com.

Hey Michael! Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. You will not be eligible for the S-MM2H programme, but there are other visas available. There are visas available for Directors of companies. This means you'll have to set up a company here with a local partner. Another one is a Spouse Visa (the one I am on), but that means you'll have to get married first. Another option is a "standard" work permit, as an employee of a company. There are ways to organise this. I hope that bit of info helped, I am no expert. Check out the website of Sarawak's Immigration Department to see what other visas might work for you.

Hi Nick, much appreciate the great content you've been creating for people interested in Malaysia! I'm a 32 yrs old Canadian resident living with my wife here in Vancouver, BC. We've been exploring different routes as to which Malaysian visa could potentially apply to us in order to come live there. The MM2H or SMM2H requirements are quite stringent for young professionals, and so this brings me to my question : Do you know of any other programs that falls under people who simply have some saving aside and want to live long term in Malaysia ? I would be very grateful if you could shine some light on this...Thank you!

Hi Gibbon, Thank you for this info 🙏 I have 2 questions 😊 1. where its says on the video proof of regular income to be exempt from paying the fixed deposit, Does that mean you dont have to have a regular income if you have a fixed deposit? Because we have a business in Australia but once we leave it will stop operating and we will no longer have an income. I am 47 and will be retiring so I fall under the category to buy a house etc. The visa info is unavailable on the Govt website……. I would love to live in Sarawak, the energy there suits me very much, it has a beautiful, calm and inviting vibe. However I am worried that we sell everything here and move our entire lives with the intention of staying in Sarawak until the end of our days but the Govt has a change and visa requirements change and we have to leave, that would be heartbreaking. 2. Does this happen to foreigners often? Thank you in advance Karrina.

1240 at avg $10k spent per year per visa. That's about 50 MILLION ringgit brought into the economy. Of course that's a rough estimate. Does that visa include a family or 1 person? 1240 visas granted. 1 family of 3 or 2 ? Some will spend way more than that some will spend less.

This programme brings in quite some direct and indirect money. Families and friends of people on S-MM2H will come and visit Sarawak as well, which will add to the local economy. I think it's a great programme. More information and statistics can be found on the website of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

@@GlobalGibbon To be honest though Sarawak long neglected the potential of this program. MM2H had almost 4000 principal recipients in 2018, plus kids and spouses. Sarawak had only about 1-2% of that total (principals). That was mainly because one needed a local sponsor that knew you. It severely cut into applications. For many it was easier (though a bit more expensive) to apply to MM2H. But the onerous new restrictions on the Federal program has REALLY made S-MM2H a bargain, and NOW Sarawak allows agents- the agents (while one pays for them) allows those without sponsors to apply and assists in many, many other ways. My understanding is that- even though there has been travel restricts in the last six months there has been more than a doubling of approvls that they had in their best year (2019) and almost a hundreds of applications are "in process". Since you cannot work inside Malaysia on MM2H any money MM2H/SMM2H brings in: buying cars, property, rent, tourism, dining, tuitions, handicrafts, club memberships, the Fixed Deposit, etc. was ALL money going into the economy, supporting the Ringgit, etc. To me it's a no brainer that a Second Home visa would bolster the Tourist economy. A single MM2H couple living in a country year round likely brings in 100 time the $$$ that a budget tourist would and maybe 20 times that of a premium tourist who stays few days. And that couple is there for 5-10 years (maybe more if they are allowed to stay)...all foreign earned income spent in the Malaysia/Sarawakian economy. My one gripe would be why not allow the Fixed Deposit to be spent down locally? It would mean the MM2Her spends more and doen't take that money out (with interest) when they depart.

@@GlobalGibbon Sometimes people gt really scared when people hear the term "Monsoon". It just means that it rain twice a day (usually once t night) rather than an hour or so in the non-rainy season. Sometimes it does POUR for ten minutes then eases up and dtizzles all day. But that is unusual. There are some areas where it does flood, but the high waters dissipate quickly. Borneo is "The Land below the Wind" (the title of an Agnes Keith book) and thus outside the Typhoon zone that hits the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, VN, China and Japan. It's untouched by the heavy Indian ocean monsoons that crash into the Himalayas and flood Bngaladesh, India and Pakistan.

The S-MM2H programme has always been different from the federal programme. Sarawak is a part of the federation of Malaysia but has various laws and rules different from Federal. These S-MM2H rules will not be changed any time soon, at least that is what is said by the Sarawak Government.

Especially because Sarawak state has full control over immigration matters under Malaysia’s federal system, which explains why Sarawak has its own MM2H programme.
@gerrelldrawhorn8617
@gerrelldrawhorn8617 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnteo9566 Indeed, Sarawak took 15 years before they made even minor changes in the program (e.g. allowing agents- provided they were Sarawakian). They did double the Fixed Deposit (after 15 years) but it only moved to what the old MM2H FD was before...and they increased the amounts you would withdraw. The Pension/Foreign Slary option still exist. If you can show you are financially stable through those there is no reuirement to submit a FD.
