Would you consider retiring in a place full of rich biodiversity, multi-cultural races and an exciting nature haven? That’s Kuching, Sarawak for you!
In our last video, we covered extensively on the cost of living in Kuching and put in a comprehensive budget breakdown for you. Today, we delve deeper into what Kuching can offer you as a retiree. It’s not like any Malaysian state, you will discover that Sarawak, being the largest of 13 states, has its own unique identity and offerings and is very different from all the other 12 states.
As a bonus, we have included a segment of interview with a Singaporean lawyer who lived and worked in Sarawak for the last 32 years, and she specialises in immigration matters such as the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home (SMM2H) Visa.
Watch and discover for yourself, the many gems you will uncover!
If you are new to this channel, we are Fran and John, the Corporate Breakout Couple. Fran is Malaysian and John is Singaporean. We broke out of the corporate rat race in Singapore and retired early in year 2020 at the age of 40 years old. We love doing cost of living videos from countries all around the world and early retirement videos, to inspire and motivate people to get out of their comfort zones and go for their dreams!
We hope you enjoy watching this video, and do let us know in the comment section if you like it!
With lots of love - Fran and John

Due to the vast land mass ratio to population, there is plenty of space for everyone! Everyone we met in Kuching lives in a landed property. Both city councils (north and south) does a good job in the upkeep of the city infrastructure, cleanliness and safety. Even during weekends at the malls, it can get crowded and jam at the pick up and drop off areas, but it's all handled smoothly. Suffice to say, we are very impressed.

The S-MM2H does allow those 30-59 years of age to reside in Sarawak...but as noted it n the video there are three additional requirements (besides the basic financial proofs and the 30- day stay requirements) that those over 50 do not need to abide by. Those 30-49 must EITHER 1) have children enrolled in a Sarawak International School; or 2)If without children, Purchase a residential property of RM600,000 (@$130,000). 3) If one has a ongoing medical issue treated by a Sarawak doctor or hospital/clinic with a regular schedule of treatments then one can apply under 30-49. One can use up to 40% of the fixed deposit for children's tuition, property purchase or medical expenses in Sarawak. One can also use the FD withdrawal for purchase of a car.

Yes, it went up 800% because the Peninsular MM2H changed their program for the worst. There is also a loophole that allows one to travel and "stay" (but not reside) in the Peninsula. It's not clear exactly what that means but many people stay semi-permanently in West Malaysia as long as they fulfill the 30 day/year in Sarawak rule. They may be facing a risk of they buy property in the West or stay too long (

Hi, thank you for the video. Quick question: What happens when govt. decides to freeze/ban MM2H visas? since you are not an actual citizen unless you go for Platinum tier in Federal MM2H, you are living like a tenant and if govt stops the visa renewal, you might be deported back from where you came from. Also, you can't work in a local company and can not vote. This feels high risk when you are deciding to settle in Malaysia with your family. What do you think about such risk?

True, this was due to the unexpected flood of applications (800%) after the Federal government upped the cost and requirements of the Federal MM2H. Originally it was about 3 months. They hope that the changes in MM2H will actually help ease the pressure, but they have made some administrative changes to speed up the processing. We'll see it it works.

To start with I spent the best part of my late teens 18 to 20 years old patroling your border In the jungle stoping and fighting the Indonesians Who were trying to take over Sarawak and the Malaysian peninsula. That was in 1965. The last time I visited I made a trip by car from Kuching to Balai Ringin. Then followed a logging track all the way to Tong Nibong. You have destroyed the Jungle!! There is nothing left not a tree left standing. In 1965 this track was an IBAN track and took two days of hard trekking to cover the distance we did in our car in a matter of hours. This area was primary jungle Full of massive teak trees etc . People still live at Nibong and try and farm pepper etc, but most of the traditional way of life has disappeared. In 1965 the area was full of wild life and now?? Seemed to me it has moved out. I love Sarawak and mainland Malaysia I was pleased to help in 1965 and every time I visit glad for you at things have developed so well for you. Things do change rapidly I found Parts of Kuching unchanged, bought back memories of our 4 days of R&R that took place every 3 months. Yes 4 days holiday every 3 months. I only wish I could spend my remaining Life in Nibong, but I found Thailand to be a cheaper option. When I went through the rigmarole of Malaysia my second home I gave up after receiving a 50, 000 RM bill for services not rendered.

Generally one cannot work in Malaysia on a S-MM2H visa without government permission. Sarawak does allow 50+ to work part time in certain sectors where the visa holder can demonstrate special skills through certificate or degrees. The government mentions teaching or work that might require a foreign language not commonplace in Sarawak). So something like working with a tour agency because of French, Dutch, Spanish or Russian clients might be appropriate) Generally on-line work where the payment is made and placed abroad is permitted.

I take issue with the above statement. Sarawak has a very balanced ethnic mix which reduces tensions and the idea that any nationality is a "foreigner". The population is about 40% Dayak (mainly Christian), 30% Malay, and 30% Chinese (mainly Christian but some Buddhist) Thus there is not the level of anti-Chinese or anti-Indian attitude that one finds in West Malaysia. The extremist Muslim OAS party is not active and the slur "pendating" is not heard. Sarawak has a much lower crime rate than cities on the Peninsula, as well.

@@gerrelldrawhorn8975 There is a typo error. What I intended to say 2 months ago is that it was safer for ethnic Chinese to live in East Malaysia and not the other way round. At least, in Sarawak and Sabah, they don't play the racial cards against Chinese. Also there is no Indians.

It’s not monthly income that they need to prove for the over 50 age group ; as long as one have bank statement with end month balance of at least RM50k in the account or any other income which can show the government they have means to support themselves while they are in Sarawak eg rental or dividends from shares , or trust fund , that would suffice.

According to Ai Lyn, for 50 years old and above, there is no need to have a monthly income. The Fixed Deposit of RM300k per couple or RM150k per individual is the only requirements, besides clean bill of health.
