Luz and Amity respect each other. The most recent episode shows this; Amity knew Luz was lying about visiting her home realm and had what she needed to prove it to herself but instead of breaching her privacy she confronted Luz about it calmly, and instead of Luz getting defensive or overreacting and thinking Amity was attacking or accusing her she talked about it openly and apologized. They know how to communicate to each other, which is the problem a lot of relationships fall to and honestly it gets annoying. Lots of couples let their resentment over keeping secrets destroy the relationship and they never just talk anything through. Because these shows always have to have drama somehow, right? This is a great couple. Nobody can prove me otherwise because they will never have enough evidence to support it because it isn't there
@Xatalla2 жыл бұрын
Owl House and Surprisingly, The ZOMBIES movies have been having couples that...actually communicate their problems to each other? That come clean about issues? That work through them??? It's so refreshing to see, and it's REALLY nice to see LGBT+ rep in a cartoon. There are so many reasons why Lumity is a great ship, not just for a cute, believable relationship between teens, but for all the other things it says too.
@the_UF3652 жыл бұрын
The tunnel of love scene shook my former bigoted self to the core. Before watching this show, I had no idea that being in love with someone of the same gender could be an option. I was taught, or at least it was heavily implied, by my church that being gay was a temptation by the devil to sin. That there was no real connection between those in an LGBTQ+ relationship. As they went through the tunnel of love, where Amity actually blushed at the thought of Luz calling her smart, cool, and classy, I knew some of the writers of the owl house must have felt that emotion. Then, to have Luz destroy the whole thing, I genuinely was scared for their relationship moving forward. Real emotions in a scene like that can only be achieved by writers who are writing g what they know. Lumity is a (you can correct me if I'm wrong) true and good representation of those in the LGBTQ+ community. My thanks goes out to Dana Terrace and the Owl crew from changing my point of view. We're all people who deserve love and happiness in this world.

@@Cr102y I mean for one, that is still most relationships in media. For two, while it is true that the trope of redemption and enemies to lovers is common the fact that something is a trope doesn't innately make it bad. This is a case of actually the trope being handled very well. Most prominently because those wrongdoings were not forgotten but worked through. In addition what makes this relationship good is that as Chorus mentioned, it isn't drawn out. There isn't really a long will they won't they. In some way it is just two kids falling for eachother and then getting together. It doesn't try to pump up the breaks or force it into many seasons or add unnecessary drama. That is more realistic and far healthier than most fictional relationships.

@Cr102y2 жыл бұрын
@@plymbum6571 Not all of them,just some of the more popular ones. It’s not just that it’s a very overused trope,it’s also about the fact that Amity nearly got Luz killed over status was something that is rarely acknowledged,going from doing the bare minimum for Willow after bullying here for years to in-universe shipping in just a single episode is pretty rushed and not exactly making up for what she did,if anything it feels like the show was just trying to make the ship happen asap regardless of what happened in the story. It’s not drawn out or brought up as a last minute decision which is good but it certainly wasn’t developed in a way that felt natural or like a good payoff,and like before,going from nearly killing Luz and bullying her first friend in the BI (or perhaps even in general which makes it worse) to being her GF in a couple of episodes doesn’t just feel rushed but also not very healthy at all,a lack of drama isn’t exactly a lack of problems,especially since the show doesn’t really acknowledge them or treats them as problems which makes it worse than most relationships in media,arguably almost on par with other toxic relationships like Mordecai x Margaret,Catradora,etc.
@plymbum65712 жыл бұрын
@@garyforagerjr5074 I would say a core element of it is that it is a first relationship between teenagers. Crushes can form quickly and randomly and once Amity was pretty much a decent human being the relationship forming was pretty much only a matter of each of them gathering the courage (or more accurately Hooty forcing them to gather up the courage). The relationship isn't done and isn't stagnant. I think most of literature makes us imagine relationships as this thing that forms really really slowly and then in a big boom. This relationship formed quickly and now they have to figure out the ins and outs of it which is in some ways far more realistic.
@plymbum65712 жыл бұрын
@@Cr102y It's worth noting that those couple of episodes were still a couple of months. And while you are right that her actions towards Willow were horrible in some way I don't see why that makes her relationship with Luz toxic. Amity's interactions with Luz were by no means positive at first but were fundamentally rooted in miscommunication and not in toxicity or malice. And after Amity committed to changing she pretty much did so entirely. In that way there really wasn't any actual toxicity between them. They got into fights and disagreements before they got to know eachother and then spent most of the season getting to know eachother and generally being positive to one another. While it took longer for Amity to apologize towards Willow (a necessary step undeniably) it doesn't change that her toxic actions were not towards Luz and after Amity apologized to Willow it still took nearly half a season before they actually began dating. I think it is important to note that this isn't treated like some sort of grand endgame relationship but as exactly what it is. A first relationship between two teenagers. Of course it isn't perfect and of course they fell for eachother relatively quickly. But that doesn't make it unhealthy and it means that the relationship is fundamentally dynamic and will grow as they do. That element is what makes this relationship well written more prominently.

I figure the fact that Luz is a protag is important to why this ship stands out so much, too. Yes, Kipo gave a relatable gay romance, but between a major supporting character and a side character not introduced for almost a full season. You can ignore that part of the story and still enjoy the show. When the protag is involved in the ship, there's a spotlight no other relationship in the show is likely to receive. Everything else said here is absolutely correct, I just feel like Luz's role in the story is a major contributing factor for why so many eyes are on this.

3:43 From what I can tell, this is only _partially_ true. Now, Dana has confirmed that the Disney execs did push for more Hexside-centric episodes. _However,_ Dana has also shown that Hexside was an early concept, being part of the original unaired pilot. Additionally, Lilith was originally conceived early in development as the principal of Hexside, before they got a better grasp on the story direction & replaced her with Bump.

I’m gonna make this short the only problem with the ship is the slightl amount of Luz shooting amity in the foot she’s punished a lot because of Luz like the library job it’s a little stinky because some parts could just be changed to not punish her and get the same result and also to have amity apologize for almost killing luz Just those are small issues in a otherwise good ship

Korrasami is indeed a crack in an open door. I was right back then when I said "years will go by and we'll get actual LGBT couples which will judge Korra poorly in hindsight". It wasn't some revolution. It was a way to deflect hate, criticism, and score easy clout. Korra got mountains of hate at the time. Most of it undeserved, but any actual constructive criticism was mired in that mess of shouting angry boys. It prevented any actual discourse of the show for years.

I actually really didn''t find Korrasami do be a well done gay couple back when I was actually watching it (though this was part of my hard right/anti-SJW phase an angry bi so that probably didn't help). I get they didn't have the choice, but it felt really underdeveloped and almost "forced," like they couldn't think of how to resolve the love triangle and just made it gay for the sake of politics. One thing I really appreciate about this show is that people actually fucking, _talk_ to each other and listen. They actually use their words instead of turning every little misunderstanding into a big deal. It starts out with Amity overreacting and misunderstanding stuff and running away as per the trope, but as they get closer, that happens less and less, because Amity has the common sense and experience to look at what's going on and see Luz is going through something. So rather than assume the worst and pout over it, she asks her what her deal is. Sometimes she won't open up, but she's never stubborn about it. In any other TV relationship (*cough* steven universe *cough*), a situation like that would lead to a 3 episode "we're not talking" arc. The closest TOH gets to that trope is Luz downplaying her daddy issues for the whole episode until she saw her lack of transparency on the issue was hurting Amity. But this did not last for several episodes and was wrapped up quickly. The way TOH goes about it feels more realistic to me. This sort of thing always irritates me in shows and movies, especially when I imagine myself in the situation and it gets resolved so easily in my head by just exchanging a few words, so it's refreshing to see characters actually communicate and show some maturity.

I appreciate that teenage anxiety is being explored in the Owl House, especially in this adorkable relationship between Luz and Amity. I feel like it's still being hurt because of the specific subject matter that reflects parts of real life. This is not on the creators and writers; it is on the people who cut the checks. Like in Steven Universe rushing to end the show, thereby stepping over any potential for subject matter that could have been explored. Steven Universe explored subjects like emotional trauma, toxic relationships, and the damages for grieving too long or denying oneself the right to grieve at all. These subjects were shown vividly throughout the series, but the world-building, motivation behind why gems needed to expand their empire. The wasted storyline behind Jasper finding a new path or apologizing to Lapis. I feel like this is what is destined for The Owl House, especially since season 3 is just a bunch of specials. Although the hiatus is lifting soon, the fact that there was one is a real cause for alarm. Hell, part of the reason why the live-action of Mulan was butchered was that some politicians way back when had some homophobic comments about the already animated movie.

In light of the newest Owl House episodes being dropped since the release of this review, there are some definite developments in why Luz X Amity ship works so well. Simply put, the two of them are relationship goals. They communicate with each other, check in with each other when one is worried about what's going on with the other, and they try to get over their anxieties about being vulnerable. Follies at the Coven Day Parade showed us just that. Amity was initially suspicious that Luz was holding something back about her attempts to make a portal to the human realm. When she was presented the opportunity to go through Luz's phone for information, she's conflicted and thinks "Shouldn't I give Luz the chance to tell me herself and know that she is safe and supported when she tells me things?" So many other times in tv, this scenario would've played out where Amity searches Luz's phone for the truth, they have a big fight about it, and then they spend the next episode or two having them try to fix it. Lumity is not just a great ship for being a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ representation in tv, but also for the fact that their relationship is a healthy one.

It’s funny because Luz is my favorite thing about this show. One, because I love her she is amazing, but two, because it’s a character that doesn’t get depicted because it’s a risk to a large and exponentially growing audience. An Afro-Latina that isn’t overtly Catholic or religious as a whole, that also is LGBTQ+? Not to mention that she is all of that openly, unashamedly, and still loved by those close to her for it?!?! That is such insane level of risk factor of a main character, and it’s something that so many of my friends *needed* to have. It’s one of the reasons Encanto got so massive as well. The subtext of ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ being a song about how Hispanics don’t talk about LGBTQ+ and keep it closeted(which Bruno lived in a closet remember) is something that gets missed by a lot of people. Luz being the adorable ball of diversity and hope she is, is genuinely my favorite character of this show, and while Amity is great, she’s not even second. Eda with her own level of trauma and fight for survival against the world takes that.

The Lumity ship is one of the major key things i enjoy about TOH! but with this rumor going around about Luz and Amity possibly breaking up now i'm worried and hoping that it won't happen i mean after all Luz and Amity's romance had been building up since season 1 and plus they haven't even been together for very long if you think about it and a lot of people in the TOH fandom have a lot riding on their relationship so they can't just throw that away, but anyway that's just my opinion.

@@honeybun8823 That's just silly on several levels. First of all, it wasn't rushed. Other shows just don't know what good pacing is. Secondly, that idea sacrifices what makes this relationship unique and turns it into another pile of crap "we're too cowardly to show the relationship until the last two minutes" storyline that LGBT people have been getting for decades of television. And third, that's not a good reason to break up outside of a soap opera. Let's say they do go with the idea that they rushed into things... remaining in the relationship and trying to figure it out from there is far more interesting and logical than breaking up and doing the same thing, *especially* if the plan is to get them back together again anyway, which just results in them pining for each other again. The thing I love about lumity is that while most ships would torture you with a will they won't they situation until at the very end, here we see a natural progression into a relationship. I don't know if that's because the writers were willing to risk the moonlighting effect, or because these weren't THE main characters, or because the series was shortened, or because, dare I say it, because it was a samesex couple so there was a limit to what they could actually show onscreen, or a mixture of all the factors.

I think a big factor as to why they're popular is also their healthy dynamic. They both make mistakes but always try to communicate and understand each other, even early on. Thank whoever wrote this for writing a good LGBT relationship in a cartoon that does pretty much all the things I thought that Korra was lacking. There is no dumb love triangle/square drama here. There is chemistry. There are moments the characters have just with the two of them. They gradually get closer over repeated time spent together ON SCREEN. They do NOT magically get very close being pen pals entirely off screen between seasons and then proceed to spend basically no time together on screen following this magical transformation. And best of all we see Amity transition from rival to friend to more than friends actually quite believably as events unfold. We can understand both sides of the relationship and why it grows as they learn more about each other. Its way more fleshed out and feels planned from the start rather than an idea that the writers suddenly had in the final season.
