Fun fact: The only reason The Godfather is Nr. 2 instead of Nr. 1 on Imdb is because of The Dark Knight fanboys. Back in 2008 they review-bombed The Godfather on Imdb to knock it from its first place and tried to get The Dark Knight to the top. While The Dark Knight never actually reached Nr. 1 of Imdb, the mass-downvoting of The Godfather caused it to fall behind Nr. 2 on Imdb, The Shawshank Redemption, and it has been that way ever since.

Ian Beach TDK fan boys aren’t actual comic book nerds, though. lmao I don’t think they have the attention span to read anything let alone comics (which is probably why they don’t like slower paced movies like the Godfather). I’m pretty sure they’re just edgy 13 year olds who liked Heath Ledger’s Joker and unironically want to be like him. And to clarify, I’m not saying you have to be an idiot to like TDK, it is a great movie, I’m just saying these guys are.

Howdy, someone who's read the godfather book here to answer the question at around 1:07:40: movie 1 was almost entirely adapted from the book. Movie 2 was original, but all of the Vito flashbacks come from the book, basically beat for beat. Movie 3 was adapted from Francis Coppola's need to keep the lights on.

I think my favorite little detail in the first Godfather is when he's reconnecting with his first girlfriend after returning from Italy. Throughout the film, variations of the iconic tune play when "business" is done: Vito and the undertaker, the horse head scene, etc. When Michael is courting Apollonia, it's not present, in favor of a different tune, suggesting he genuinely loves her. However, when she is killed and he returns to propose to Kay, it's playing softly in a background. Because after Apollonia's death, his transformation is basically total. It's not about him loving Kay, marrying her, and having kids with her: it's about needing her to marry and have kids with.

Ah, my favorite two films of all-time. My late grandfather first showed them to me at the tender age of 10. Probably shouldn’t have, and I didn’t get any of it anyways. I read the novel by Puzo when I was 14. Still remember the shock when the Turk tried to assassinate the Don, called my grandfather on the phone almost immediately. Similar thing happened with “look at how they massacred my boy.” After I finished reading, I rewatched the films with the old man. Several times. About once a year AMC would have a “Godfather weekend,” and I’d always spend it over at my grandparents’ house. Sometimes they played the scenes in chronological order, meaning the first scene would be kid Vito in Sicily and the last scenes being Fredo getting wacked and Michael slamming the door on Kay. Of course, Nana took control of the television when they would show the third one. My grandfather wasn’t Italian, by the way. He was Swedish-Portuguese, but he loved pasta and mob films. I’m 23 now. The old fart kicked the bucket several years ago. But I still have his copy of the book and the vintage VHS of the films.

My grandfather died when I was three, but my family would always watch both films (we do not acknowledge a third, and MY Nana was too sweet to change the channel if the cousins were enjoying themselves, but someone would always do it) on AMC on Thanksgiving and the copy of the book I read is his, one of the few “civilian” copies of his signature we have is in the front of the book. We’re Irish but my family is from Brooklyn, which was always given as an explanation for certain “non-Irish” behavior XD

The power skipped Fredo because he was seen as incompetent. He was sent to Vegas in Part 1 just to keep him out of the way. It's also not a monarchy. There's a bunch of mafia rules to adhere to, but there's no chain of succession or anything.

@gnalkhere
@gnalkhere 4 жыл бұрын
The HBO-GO version of The Godfather: A Novel for Television is the best version of the chronological cut; it's 7 hours long, the violence is re-inserted (it was notoriously toned down at the time), and it's got no commercial breaks (in their words: there are no pauses. YOU, the viewer, get to make your own breaks). I've seen it multiple times and it's a whole beast of its own design. Still doesn't compare to the 2 movies separately but it's worth a watch

I think that what they were going with the ending wasn't that he die of old age: it was that he died alone. The movie is about he losing his powers, family and friends, and the last shot is him dying just falling with nothing around him. The execution was really bad and I don't know how many people got that, but it's not something totally disconnected IMO.

The reason Sofia Coppola was cast was because Francis Ford Coppola had already decided on an actress by the name of Rebecca Schaeffer when she was murdered by a stalker so soon to the production of The Godfather 3 that Francis was rushed into a very last minute choice. It wasn't NOT nepotism but Sofia was never the first choice for the role. Just wanted to add that because I don't think that's a common fact about the movie.

Part III really should've been about how Michael grew to be the exact counterpoint to his father--a loveless and ruthless Don with nothing but cunning, power and avarice to comfort him, ruling the game but having no real kin anymore. That would've also made it much more brutal a message against getting mixed up in that kind of life, the perfect tragic ending to a character who started out a war hero with a limitless future and a close network of loved ones.

Just rewatched part III a couple of days ago. I understand why people would like it less than the other 2. I don't understand why anybody would rate it lower than a 7/10. It is still a solid film. I really think people bandwagon along how bad it is. It is really not that bad.

@@pontagamingg275 I disagree with everything you said so I don't think we can have a productive discussion xD To each their own. I liked the film. In retrospect, I like it more than Part II (which I honestly believe is the most boring one of the trilogy, most of the whole Cuba section should be cut out of the film, ruins the pacing and doesn't add much besides lenght). I still consider Part I vastly superior to both.

One of you recommend The Beach. My number 1 guilty pleasure movie. It represents the end of the 90s so personally to me. @@theeoddments960 I love it. It's also Scorsese's most chaotic film. It feels at times like the movie is completely out of control at times. Which works great with the ending. Mean Streets is one of those movies you have to see if you want to call yourself a film buff, or if you even want to make one. I can't tell you how many directors I've seen tell the same story. Saw Mean Streets, changed their lives forever. It sounds crazy saying this about a Scorsese movie. But Mean Streets has to be one of the most underrated films of all time.

I watched The Godfather Trilogy a few months ago for the first time. The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) are without exaggeration the best films ever made. Absolute masterpieces. The Godfather Part III (1990) was frankly not as bad as I thought it would be. The bad reputation of this film is not unfounded especially when you compare it to Part I and II. But as a separate film? It's actually not that bad. The Godfather Part III (1990) is definitely a downgrade from its predecessors, but it's still a good film and an acceptable end to this Trilogy.
