Fun fact: The only reason The Godfather is Nr. 2 instead of Nr. 1 on Imdb is because of The Dark Knight fanboys. Back in 2008 they review-bombed The Godfather on Imdb to knock it from its first place and tried to get The Dark Knight to the top. While The Dark Knight never actually reached Nr. 1 of Imdb, the mass-downvoting of The Godfather caused it to fall behind Nr. 2 on Imdb, The Shawshank Redemption, and it has been that way ever since.

Ian Beach TDK fan boys aren’t actual comic book nerds, though. lmao I don’t think they have the attention span to read anything let alone comics (which is probably why they don’t like slower paced movies like the Godfather). I’m pretty sure they’re just edgy 13 year olds who liked Heath Ledger’s Joker and unironically want to be like him. And to clarify, I’m not saying you have to be an idiot to like TDK, it is a great movie, I’m just saying these guys are.

I think my favorite little detail in the first Godfather is when he's reconnecting with his first girlfriend after returning from Italy. Throughout the film, variations of the iconic tune play when "business" is done: Vito and the undertaker, the horse head scene, etc. When Michael is courting Apollonia, it's not present, in favor of a different tune, suggesting he genuinely loves her. However, when she is killed and he returns to propose to Kay, it's playing softly in a background. Because after Apollonia's death, his transformation is basically total. It's not about him loving Kay, marrying her, and having kids with her: it's about needing her to marry and have kids with.

Ah, my favorite two films of all-time. My late grandfather first showed them to me at the tender age of 10. Probably shouldn’t have, and I didn’t get any of it anyways. I read the novel by Puzo when I was 14. Still remember the shock when the Turk tried to assassinate the Don, called my grandfather on the phone almost immediately. Similar thing happened with “look at how they massacred my boy.” After I finished reading, I rewatched the films with the old man. Several times. About once a year AMC would have a “Godfather weekend,” and I’d always spend it over at my grandparents’ house. Sometimes they played the scenes in chronological order, meaning the first scene would be kid Vito in Sicily and the last scenes being Fredo getting wacked and Michael slamming the door on Kay. Of course, Nana took control of the television when they would show the third one. My grandfather wasn’t Italian, by the way. He was Swedish-Portuguese, but he loved pasta and mob films. I’m 23 now. The old fart kicked the bucket several years ago. But I still have his copy of the book and the vintage VHS of the films.

We’re Irish but my family is from Brooklyn, which was always given as an explanation for certain “non-Irish” behavior XD

The HBO-GO version of The Godfather: A Novel for Television is the best version of the chronological cut; it's 7 hours long, the violence is re-inserted (it was notoriously toned down at the time), and it's got no commercial breaks (in their words: there are no pauses. I'd love to hear their thoughts on Mean Streets.

Love that movie along with who’s that knocking on my door. Totally gets you into the little Italy scene like you’re really there. Feels like Scorsese learning to make a movie which is cool with all the experimental shots too.
@ethanbradley20894 жыл бұрын
@@theeoddments960 I love it. It's also Scorsese's most chaotic film. It feels at times like the movie is completely out of control at times. Which works great with the ending. Mean Streets is one of those movies you have to see if you want to call yourself a film buff, or if you even want to make one. I can't tell you how many directors I've seen tell the same story. Saw Mean Streets, changed their lives forever. It sounds crazy saying this about a Scorsese movie. But Mean Streets has to be one of the most underrated films of all time.

What a coincidence that I watched the first two Godfather movies for the first time for my History Of Film class, and now you guys are doing an episode about it. I'm still deciding whether or not I should watch the 3rd one.

14:20 Technically, the EXACT halfway point of the movie (the end of the restaurant scene) is only the end of "Book one" of nine. (The other sections are markedly shorter)

For people who’ve heard the episode: I’ve only seen part one, can I listen to what they say about the first movie without having one of the sequels spoiled for me? Or do they reference all three films even when only talking about one?

There are no major spoilers for Parts II or III during the discussion of the original.

Actually, they talk about a major plot point and death in Part II (and they talk about it when discussing Part III, as well).

Part III made some sense for a movie about an old man with the past he's had letting things pass him by until he dies.

One thing about the first Godfather they never mentioned, almost every baby in the movie is crying all the time. Was this intentional or were all the babies that happened to be in the movie really upset during filming?

I watched The Godfather Trilogy a few months ago for the first time. The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) are without exaggeration the best films ever made. Absolute masterpieces. The Godfather Part III (1990) was frankly not as bad as I thought it would be. The bad reputation of this film is not unfounded especially when you compare it to Part I and II. But as a separate film? It's actually not that bad. The Godfather Part III (1990) is definitely a downgrade from its predecessors, but it's still a good film and an acceptable end to this Trilogy.
