*Fun fact:* The reason why many of Spider-Man’s villains were originally just standard, clear cut bad guys was because of Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko’s political views. He was a moral objectivist and didn’t believe in grey morality or even the notion of a villain having a sympathetic origin. This actually led to some conflict between him and Stan Lee, apparently even Stan thought that the villains needed something more to flesh them out lol. Ditko was only okay with Spider-Man being an asshole (early Spidey could be a massive dick at times) because he was just a teenager who didn’t know any better.

The preoccupations of DITKO, LEE, and KIRBY were very apparent in their work (even in the mainstream). Few ppl in any medium have their level of influence and their amount of freedom. The funny think about it is, LEE is probably the most instrumental to why the Marvel Superheroes were so popular (with his characterizations) but he was also the least interesting and most strictly capitalistic of the bunch. Ditko was really smart about incorporating politics and psychedelia into his books and Kirby was good at world-building (and obviously the amazing art). Lee was just good at writing dialogue. Funny to think about.

@@iansmart4158 It really goes to show that characterization and dialogue can really push things over the edge eh? I think that it's really a testament to all the talent of those days that they created these lasting legacies. Lee might be overrated but he did great work, as did Ditko and Kirby. @Jonathan Jones he was good at creating relatable characters. I’d argue his impulse to make them normal ppl is what makes them so timeless (having the Fantastic Four deal with marital issues, NYC aren’t, and discrimination was a master stoke) He didn’t really do anything with the x men tho. Not till Wisemen and Claremont did they become great. But he definitely planted the seeds.

It's funny that Alex wanted to know what someone who hasn't seen many of the other spider-man movies would think of nwh, because that was basically my experience. My friend called me out of the blue to go watch it, and I had only seen homecoming and Andrew's first one and the only exposure I had to the raimi trilogy was through memes (which prepared me surprisingly well). Despite that I absolutely loved it, it was a great theater experience, and the characters really sold themselves even without a lot of the context. Also the film just does a pretty decent job of summarising the prior movies without you seeing them. It was funny though that because I hadn't really watched their films I ended up being way happier seeing daredevil than any other returning character lol. Afterwards I actually went back and watched all of the previous Spider-man movies, and then re-watched nwh and I think it held up quite well. Very excited to see where they take Holland's spider-man next, and I'd love a Garfield one if they can write it to do his spider-man justice.

I'm with you. I think the distinction between the perspectives here is between Ralph and Alex viewing the line as integral to the character, while Adam is arguing that it falls more in line with a reference and is part of movie history rather then the character itself. So from Ralph's pov as someone who deeply loves this character, the scene works because he loves the line and the impact. But if you view it like a reference, it does become really corny and I think Adam's perspective is what you get. Both are valid, just depends on the person.
@Whawpenshaw
@Whawpenshaw 2 жыл бұрын
I think there is a big difference between "references" and "repeating" Big Bang Theory and Ready Player One are references. They just say the name of the thing and it's a big moment. Saying "may the force be with you" at the end of Return of the Jedi isn't a "reference" to A New Hope. It's repeating a mantra of the universe. Likewise, "with great power comes great responsibility" told to Peter as a counter point to him wanting to give up isn't a "reference". Spider Man has always been about sacrifice. He has been given a burden and what makes him a great person is that he's willing to shoulder it, even though he didn't ask for it and it's costing him everything.
@obscure.reference
@obscure.reference 2 жыл бұрын
it’s totally unmotivated in the film lol how is may’s death anything to do with responsibility? it’s a reference to the universe/world of spiderman. it’s not authentically coming from the film. hell, he should’ve taken the lesson from iron man. would’ve made way more sense. or if she actually died in service of her ideals instead of literally standing still and waiting for it.
@lancesilvis4085
@lancesilvis4085 2 жыл бұрын
Gonna try to help Alex finish what he was getting at around the @13:30 mark. It makes sense for NWH to have the nostalgia or be retroactively making fun of the old movies because those events occured in another universe from this movie. They actually have a reference to go to, because those characters experienced it. It makes absolutely NO SENSE for aladdin or lion king to reference the original movies, because those movies don’t exist in those universes. Garfield making fun of his villains works, because his character experienced the events of those movies. The Genie breaking the fourth wall and referencing events from the old Aladdin makes no sense unless we’re to believe that in that universe the original Aladdin exists. Just fourth wall breaking with no purpose or logic.

Venom lore in the comics is kinda crazy. In every universe, all Venoms are interconnected. Knull, the main bad guy from Venom, can kill a Celestial. I think that's the plan for a Venom/Spiderman crossover that they want to do. Have Tom Hardy's Venom, Tom Holland's Spider-Man, probably Flash Thompson, and maybe Andrew Garfield's Spiderman since they are listening to positive reviews with his performance in NWH, go against Knull in planet Venom.

The cool thing about Ralph and Alex's bet is that both of their reasonings were (most likely) right. Ralph thought Venom would be included because Sony would want to shoehorn him in to capitalize off of the character, while Alex said they wouldn't because they want to maintain the purity of the MCU brand of quality. Given that Venom did show up but had no bearing on the plot and was whisked away almost immediately, the signs point to Sony pressuring Marvel to include him but Marvel just throwing him in to say that they did and to introduce the venom symbiote into the MCU. I have no way to know if those were the actual reasons behind Venom's appearance-but-not-actually, but it would be hilarious if it was a result of Marvel saying "fine, we'll include your character in the movie" and then turning around and chucking him in for two seconds before deleting him from the universe.

There’s a fanboy theory going around the interwebs that it wasn’t the real Dr Strange but homeboy from the multiverse (I think the one from the Loki series..?) If you watch the Dr Strange preview at the end of the movie he asks Wanda about the multiverse and finds out the biggest threat is “him”. Or, one could argue he is kind of an arrogant prick who likes showing off his powers, so… take your pick. Or it’s just dumb. Always an option!

There’s two easy fixes I can see them doing to save it. Either just have it so that’s not Dr Strange that was in the movie and rather an imposter, or a more complex one I’d really like. I think it would be pretty cool if Dr Strange is borderline depressed and the tile of this unfeeling sorcerer supreme is getting to him on a mental level. The fact that he had to kill Tony just to have his universe survive until he has to inevitably do that again with whoever comes next in the crosshairs of “sacrifice to save the universe” would probably give him a massive amount of survivors guilt. I’d like it if all of his dumb actions were just him being subconsciously suicidal and just wanting to die. Have it kinda be like a Rick Sanchez angle of, “there’s an infinite amount of universes, there’s no point in any of this”

I agree with basically everything you guys said on No Way Home. But I think Adam saying the great power line was just a reference I don't think is fair. That is a core part to the Spider-Man mythos and character. It is what literally defines him. I think comparing it to the Green Goblin "i'm something of a scientist myself" isn't really fair at all. I def think it could've been handled better but it was a needed core part of the film for Peter's character.
@channelname5345
@channelname5345 2 жыл бұрын
to go against Adam about the whole "great power, great responsibility" scene with Aunt May, I think Aunt May's whole character in this movie is to encourage Peter to save the villains in this movie. Like tom Holland was going to send them all back to their deaths in their own universes with that magic box (which is a dubious plot point IMO). Aunt May in this movie is the most justified character to deliver the Great Power/Great Responsibility line in the entire spiderman franchise. that being said, her death scene was pretty bad cause she walked around for like 4 minutes and talking after being smashed by the green goblin's glider and we all knew she was dead. that was really cheesy
@samk6141
@samk6141 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, having the line be her response to Peter telling her “it’s not my responsibility” felt like it fit pretty well imo, whereas it felt more forced in the other Spider-Man movies to me

I feel like a multiverse works in Spiderman because it's low scale super heroism, not necessarily this movie but in a lot of other Spiderman crossovers it's "we've crossed over to another world and we're saving another new York" logistically it's not far apart from Spiderman going to Boston and having an adventure there. Multiverse is much more manageable when it's like just one city in another world

I think we would of all loved to of seen this prior to the reshoots. Covid travel restrictions was the main reason why Sandman and the Lizard weren't as fleshed out as the other characters. Hence why voice over work was done, Sandman was completely CG and why The Lizard stayed in the van and was mostly out of sight.
