Sargent and Greenleaf Opening a lock / Changing combination

This is an overview video of the basic components of a 6700 series locks. In the video I demonstrate the dialing sequence and the change combination sequence.

The bent handle of the change key will always face the lock bolt when inserting or removing the change key. Additionally the change key is turned to a position so that the handle is in the confines of the footprint of the lock, if viewed from the back of the lock. Keeping this in mind helps you always know which way to insert the change key, rotate it and remove it, no matter which mounting position the lock body is in, LH(Left Hand), RH(Right Hand), VU(Vertical Up) or VD(Vertical Down).

The end where it goes back 10, is that necessary, I have seen other change videos where they just stopped on the last digit.

Should it be turning super smoothly? Can I spray WD-40 into the wheels withing the lock housing? I feel quite some resistance when turning the wheel.

I changed my combination no problem. It was good for a year, until I went on vacation,..it looked like they beat it with a rubber hammer? Then it would not open,.. I tried and tried 3 months later it opened? I called liberty safes, they sent a new lock? I installed it,... but it would only open on one number like 45? It will not spin a complete turn to set a new combination? Oh yeah, the changer key when its in the right place wont go in?

Howdy. I just purchased a safe and the fence in the lock was missing the spring. Can I order parts or do I need a whole new lock?

Good video but at the 1:57 mark you say if you have dialed the combination INCORRECTLY you will come to a hard stop when you dial back to the left. It should be CORRECTLY. Just changed out a digital dial with a new mechanical system from S&G.

I think he meant if you have DIALED THE COMBINATION IN CORRECTLY. Which is weird, he should have said if you have DIALED IN THE COMBINATION CORRECTLY. Just my 2 cents:

I haven't opened my safe for 4 or 5 years . Now it won't open or come to that hard stop . I am certain I have the correct combination is there any chance my safe has failed and is in need of repair ?

Hi Shawn, thank you for the changing combination information especially; using the key. But; I do have one ? when you changed to the new number you appeared not to go back and start at zero before entering the new number or do you have to do that only after the first time when changing to a new number?

Hi Stew Beef, 0 isn't required in any way when changing the combination. The only things you have to pay strict attention to are the numbers in the previous combination and the new combination when they come under the needed index mark.

I have an SC wall safe and dont have the combination, i did when i moved in my house but i lost it. What can i do. Am i out of luck?

You can call the manufacturer of the safe (not the lock manufacturer) to see if they have the old combination, otherwise you need a technician to open. If a technician does have to drill, it won't ruin your safe, just the lock which can be replaced.
