Shoes, socks, braces, caps. It's a minefield out there Chris. My only rules, if you could call them rules, is (1) don't wear the same material with two different patterns as they will clash. (2) if you wear light colours in a suit wear darker accessories, darker siuts with lighter accessories. I know one can be more adventurous, but unless one really knows what they are doing, err on the conservative side. Thanks again Chris for your efforts to explain the inexplicable. I doubt if I could pull it off. I just work on a hunch if something looks together or if something looks incongruous.

Hi Billy, glad you enjoyed the video, it sounds like you found your own way of creating ensembles. Thank you for sharing your rules-it's always great to get some tips and suggestions from others. I completely agree that matching patterns and colours can be a bit of a minefield. Your rules about avoiding clashing patterns and balancing light and dark colours in a suit makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your encouragement, and I think your advice will definitely help guide others. I try to keep it conservative unless I'm feeling particularly adventurous! And honestly, I think trusting your instincts about what looks good or incongruous is a smart approach. Sometimes a hunch is all you need to pull off a great look. Hello Chris. Great advice. I love side adjusters but they are hard to find here in the US. I also like and wear braces / suspenders. My grandfather called them galluses . They seem to be more comfortable than a belt. Great looking tie and pocket square combo today my friend. Thanks for the information on the ties. I didn't know that about the lining. I too wear a lot of brown brogues. Very best regards Ron

Hi Ron, glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. I'm surprised side adjusters are difficult to find in the US. I'm glad you enjoy wearing braces (suspenders) and it is great to hear the Scottish term 'galluses' being used for braces. I agree, not a bad combination with the tie and pocket square and you learnt something new sartorially about tipped and untipped ties. Regarding socks, as a child & as I was growing up I never considered socks to be very important. It wasn't until I was much older I realised socks aren't "underwear" and are an accessory, like a tie or pocket square, and people do see them so they are an important part of your outfit to invest in

Hi Chris - great content, as ever! I have to admit to having worn too many bright garments together on occasion - as you say, less is often more! My grandfather nearly always wore sde adjusters, he always used to say a belt was basically an admission that one's trousers are not bespoke. I'm not sure he ever wore bespoke though...just the image! He as born in 1913, so of the 'old school'!

Hi Yoric, glad you enjoyed the video. I can definitely relate to the temptation of wearing too many bright garments at once - it's an easy trap to fall into! Your grandfather sounds like he had a great sense of style and some strong opinions on trousers. The idea of side adjusters instead of a belt is quite classic and sophisticated. Even if he never wore bespoke, it's wonderful that he aimed for that polished image. People from that era really knew how to dress with elegance.👍🙂

As always a great video.Btw I'm a slim ,sporty man in my 40s and I almost exclusively wear braces or side adjusters.I just prefer them as I feel the belt cuts your body in two especially when wearing a suit.

I like american suspenders to hold up my pants. I'm very fit with a flat belly. A six-pack. Suspenders are my choice sir

On a country cap.- I have seen a photo of a group of men, on an Estate that was owned by one branch of my ancestors. They were, as written on the photo "Otter Hunting" with dogs. The picture was from the early 1900s. The caps they were wearing, to me, looked more like What we now call "newsboy" caps rather than "flat caps". They were wearing plus 4s or 2s and tweed. I imagine they were the keepers etc rather than the land owners as they tended to wear breeches when hunting/shooting.

Hi Emlee, Thanks for your comment and you are correct in your observations. It was very common for estates owners to get there game keepers to cull the number of otters, as they affected the fish numbers for fishing on certain stretches of a river. Your description sounds like the type of clothes that would be worn back in those days and the baker boy hat (New boy) hat was very common for the working class to wear in those days, flat caps were more commonly worn by the gentry. Something else to consider, is that many estates had their own tweed design (pattern), which was unique to a particular estate. plus 2's or 4's wear very common in that period as well when shooting and fishing, and common for both gentry as well as commoners 👍🙂

@@TheBritishDapper Cheers, I know that Purdey say that breeches are correct for the guns.... 2 and 4s for those working. I don't know if there was an Estate Tweed, it had passed from my side, the Matthews to relatives who combined the Matthews' and Price Estates then onto the Dilwyn-Llewellyn family... who were "cousins" of the Price chap. The Estate was the Penllergare Estate where the first photograph of the moon was taken... well, a gent has to have a hobby ;) Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. Nice ensemble BTW. @@MisterBurtonshaw Hi there thanks for getting back to me, that interesting to hear, some estates did historically wear an estate tweed, like the Holkham estate did and still do wear it, for their game keepers. Breeches are for horse riding, do you mean breeks?

@@TheBritishDappersorry, yes, the ones with no sort of turn up. The Estate, even when combined with the neighbouring one was only a few thousand acres…. They were extremely wealthy compared to “ordinary” folk, but not in the same league as the large Estates. Unfortunately, they got their land from native rulers of these Islands, not Germans or chaps from Normandy.

Hi Pete, Glad you enjoyed the video. I tend to pinch the tie in am M shape as I tighten the knot and it seems to work for me most times, but I have learnt with every tie knot if it doesn't work first time then don't continue struggling with it - start again from scratch, there is a difference between finessing the finish and rework and I have found with rework the knot never ends up looking sharp and the tie ends up being stretched or miss shaped 🙂 I'll add in in a video at some point in the future👍🙂

At 3:32, are you sure that the labelling of the graphic is correct? You seem to have marked untipped and tipped in reverse... or am I missing something? :)

Hi there, the tipped tie is actually tipped with same fabric (rather than a contrasting fabric) and the untipped one is showing the back of the printed fabric as the outer fabric used in the tie. The image is correct👍🙂

Sorry but the black brogue shoe you show at 23:01 shouldn't at all be mirror-shined. Just a hint of shine befits a brogue. A most watchable video, btw

Glad you enjoyed the video, personally I like many other ex-military like to see a person wearing a bulled (mirror shined) pair of leather shoes, many people aspire to getting that finish sartorially. Each to their own I guess, but thanks for sharing your personal views with us on this subject👍🙂
