I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I just finished "the taming of Gollum" an hour ago, so it's rather fresh in my memory. It's made clear that Saruman bit off FAR more than he could chew, and even when Sauron suspects that Saruman got the Ring, he seems to believe he's in control of the situation, as does Gandalf. While early on, their speculations about the Threat Isengaurd posed to Mordor implied the race you mention, by Isengaurd's defeat at the hands of the Ents, everyone seems to believe he was the one being manipulated all along. This passage says it all really. "A strong place and wonderful was Isengard, and long it had been beautiful; and there great lords had dwelt, the wardens of Gondor upon the West, and wise men that watched the stars. But Saruman had slowly shaped it to his shifting purposes, and made it better, as he thought, being deceived - for all those arts and subtle devices for which he forsook his former wisdom, and which fondly he imagined were his own, came but from Mordor; so that what he made was naught, only a little copy, a child's model or a slave's flattery, of that vast fortress, armoury prison, furnace of great power, Barad-dûr, The Dark Tower, which suffered no rival, and laughed at flattery, biding it's time, secure in its pride and its immeasurable strength." ― The Two Towers, The Road to Isengard
@LoreOfTheRingsYT4 жыл бұрын
@@Thumbdumpandthebumpchump As much as I agree upon this, what if Saruman had conquered the Ring: Tolkien did in one of his letters mention that only Gandalf the White could have faced Sauron with the One Ring. Not even Aragorn or Galadriel could have withstood this challenge. Gandalf the white, would that include Saruman the white? As he was of similar strength per se, but not entirely. It might be that even Saruman could not control the ring. If however was so, then it really was a race.

I might travel a little bit deeper into that path, actually. It's not just attempting to understand your foe. Tolkien wasn't a big fan of truly and fundamentally evil characters, one of his regrets was that he didn't make the orcs more sympathetic, not to make Sauron less "evil", but because he just wasn't a big fan of an entirely sapient and uniformly evil people. I think what it means by "Studying the art of the enemy" is a focus on power. After all, Saruman was the most powerful of the Istari, and studied deeply into the enemy's arts. Remember also that Sauron's great fear was not that the ring would be destroyed, but that it would be used against him. Remember also that Boromir's temptation was not towards evil actions, but towards the use of the Ring and the power it represents to fight against Sauron. I see Saruman as a similiar character to Boromir, in that way, but without redemption. His aims were pure, at least at first, but his pursuit of power, even if that power was as an ends to defeat Sauron, was what lead to his corruption. In the end, Sauron was stopped not through superior force of arms, but through loyalty, humbleness, self-sacrifice, and mercy. Tl;dr, I don't disagree with your premise, but I'd go further and put forward that the tool of the enemy in this context is physical might itself.

Saruman wasn't interested in Ring-lore, he was categorically obsessed with it, and was the undisputed master of it by the time of the War of the Ring (barring those who had participated in their creation, i.e. the Elves and Sauron himself). He was not unlike a scientist who, through exposure to whatever disease they are trying to cure, end up contracting that very disease. Like some research scientists of today, he was very much detached from the real world and dealing entirely with abstractions. Instead of mentally living in an ivory tower, he literally resided in the impregnable tower of Orthanc. This is in stark contrast to Gandalf, who was much more of a field operative. Saruman likely thought of himself as the ultimate realist, seeking to fight fire with fire.

Yah, i always wondered way back when first reading the stories why Saruman and Sauron sounded so similar but then I read a couple of days ago on a website that Sauron was originally named Mairon which meant "the admirable" but the Eldar later after his first treacheries called him Sauron as it was changing his original name in a rhyme mockery to "the abominable" or "the abhorred" also. The Sindar elves called him Gorthaur the Cruel, gorthaur meaning " the dread abomination". Mairon was a good and incorrupt Maia originally but desired order and perfection so much he became infatuated with Melkor's beliefs about change and control as he wanted things to happen faster and he wanted to dominate creatures and manipulate them more. The statement that he desired "order and perfection " doesnt seem to match up with his actions of instigating chaos and destruction and desecration of everything made by the other Valar and trying to corrupt and mislead as many of the first Humans and Elves as he could at every opportunity. It was more like he was just against any aspect of Valarian creation that wasnt Melkor's. He just became like a programmed mental clone as a slighter version of Melkor.

he looked into the palantir way too much, thought he was strong enough to have a stare down against sauron and sauron gradually turned him. the palantir were originally meant for the numenorians to use for long distance calls. sauron corrupted them and anyone who looked into them were suborned by sauron. a scene they never showed in the movie is the part where aragorn has a mental fight against sauron thru the palantir of orcanth (sp?) and aragorn wrests back control of one of the palantir. meaning that only the true king of numenor can fully control and have the mental strength to use the palantir and wrest it from sauron
@montecarlo16514 жыл бұрын
Spot on. By controlling the palantir, Sauron is able to suborn both the Steward of Gondor and Saruman. With the Steward, he induces despair by revealing the size of his armies. The situation with Saruman is more complex for there is genuine fear in Sauron that Saruman may have found the ring. This is why Pippin's looking into the Palantir is so important (not to mention Saruman's reaction when Wormtongue throws it out of Orthanc). Pippin's looking into the stone suggests to Sauron that Saruman is indicating that he now controls the ring. Inded, right through to the final moments when before the ring is destroyed, Sauron believes his enemies are going to use the ring against him. Initially he suspects Saruman, later he thinks it is Aragorn.

Thank you for your very thorough commentary on Saruman. You are correct in saying that Saruman , if he had obtained and used the One Ring, would have supplanted Sauron as the Dark Lord of Middle Earth. This is why Gandalf refused the One Ring and why Galadriel also refused it when Frodo offered it to her in Lothlorien. Unlike Suraman, they were wise enough to know that the use of evil means and methods to obtain good results always fails and leaves matters worse instead of better.

The time of humans was already there since the end of the Second Era, the Third Age wasn't even their Zenith. Dwarves had lost over half their halls and were very slowly reclaiming them, suggesting a comeback, but it will take time. Elves hadn't been in the spotlight for pretty much an era and a half by then, mostly because they never really cared for it, only taking the lead because otherwise Morgoth would extend his influence everywhere.

Great video! Saruman is my favourite villain of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. He sought, by terrible means, to become Sauron's servant alone or perhaps gain the One Ring for himself. Though he offers Gandalf the Grey the choice to join him and try to master the One Ring, I doubt he would share power with him. Let us not forget that Saruman had long envied Gandalf, that being one of the reasons for his descent into evil besides his lust for dominion and being enticed by Sauron. Gandalf notes that only "one hand at a time can wield" the One. Saruman would undoubtedly have tried to master it for himself and try to submit the Grey Pilgrim to his will. However, Saruman played a too dangerous game by cheating his master, Sauron, as well as betraying Gandalf (he should have known better than to play with a Power like Sauron; he should have remained supportive to Mordor or accepted to hand over information to the Free Peoples after the Battle at the Hornnurg). His list of allies grew thin and he quickly lost his master's trust. I doubt the Dark Lord would have killed him though. He seemed content with punishing him by handing over Isengard to the Mouth of Sauron and having him robbed of free will (enslaving the wizard ). Saruman had been a useful "puppet" (sometimes intentionally and sometimes unwittingly) after all in keeping Rohan busy for a while, leaving Gondor to fend for itself against the armies from Mordor. Had Sauron won, I think Saruman would have tried to disguise his attempt to covet the Ring, tried to justify that his allegiance was genuine and beg for forgiveness. And it is my belief that the Dark Lord would have spared him, for he had been a means to achieve some ends and had served him well. It would be difficult, but I am certain Saruman would find a way to rise ever higher in Sauron's favor some way or another with a scheming mind such as his. And it would amuse the Lord of the Dark to see to how great lengths the disgraced Wizard would go to please him.

I find your points very valid and convincing, you have truly understood Saruman! Sorry for not responding before this moment, but for whatever reason, your comment was marked as spam by KZbin. Saruman's spirit lingered over the shire, troubled. Something is missing he muses to himself. He needs a change of scenery. He looks up at the stars. I will go there he decides. So he traveled to a galaxy far far away and became a sith lord.. He liked it for a time but he was Still unsatisfied. Killing millions gets tedious. He decided he wanted out and after a hundred years or so he allowed himself to be defeated. He traveled back to Earth, depressed, longing for something more. He took different roles throughout history.. He became Dracula for a time, he even tried being a good guy once and helped Sherlock Holmes, it didn't work out.. he went back to being evil and fought James bond, but it all still left him feeling empty. He eventually found himself in england, he took the form of the familiar old man, wandering the country side. He met a lady near London fell in love and settled down. She gave him a son. They named him willy. She made him happy for a season but She passed away soon after, Leaving him all alone to raise their son. ( Saruman is seen wearing an apron, a crying baby in one-arm and a book in the other. ) He could never get enough of books. He discovered dentistry from one such book. His eyebrows rose in excitement. A huge smile appeared on his face. I can do this! He thought. He studied it and became quite good at it. He practiced on willy, giving him braces. Saruaman soon wanted to open a dentist office. He hadn't been this excited about something in thousands of years. Meanwhile, Willy had became a teenager, obsessed with candy, how to make it, different flavors etc. One day Willy was helping with the move to the new office when He accidentally discovered his dad's past from some papers and items in a old chest. It tumbled over and it's contents fell out. Maps of Middle earth, drawings of the ring of power, the death star, Dracula's castle with hundreds of people impaled on spikes and a strange flashlight handle looking thing, were all in it. He read the papers in horrified shock. He confronted saruman with the evidence. He didn't deny it. Willy left home angry and traveled the world, seeking his own way and the secrets to candy. A few years have passed. Saruman had found his true calling in dentistry but customers were few and far between. Business was slow. His boredom soon caused his thoughts to return to world conquest. He grew bitter. He dug out his old books and robes, reminiscing. He yearned for the old days, killing millions. He found his old light saber in the chest and activated it. He also spotted his old staff.. He smiled. The sound of the lightsaber was soothing and the feel of the staff comforting. He then fought imaginary battles in the bedroom with them. Swinging them this way and that. Ahhh, The good old days he said aloud, At least that was something I could do. It is settled then. I will take this world back. He deactivated the light saber and put the staff back in the corner. Willy came back home at this point. Saruman was very happy to see him and they embraced.. he put aside his plans for world conquest, FOR NOW, to repair he and his son's relationship. Willy had already forgiven his dad after seeing how horrible the world truly was, but he didn't want to see it destroyed or conquered by his father. He had a plan. Willy had discovered candy making in his world travels and all the secrets of making wonderful flavors from candy masters from all over the world, his candy was also magical.. he had his fathers blood after all.. He got a loan from the local bank, and opened a small candy factory. You see, candy making is not only for himself, but to help keep his dads cravings for world conquest in check also. The candy factory soon took off, he repaid the loan, and added more and more buildings. He hired oompa loompas to help take some of the work load off him. By this point the factory covered several city blocks. It was huge, with all kinds of magical passageways inside. You may be surprised to learn that willy also supplies a very special line of candy to honeydukes. Willy now keeps saruman supplied with an endless host of patients. It helps keep saruman busy and his mind off his appetites for destruction. Saruman is quite satisfied with life now. He even whistles while he works ( above his patients screams when he is pulling teeth of course ) He will never again trouble our Earth, middle Earth, or any other galaxies far far away.

And in those mirror images Frodo sees members of the fellowship (specifically Sam) in chains and being whipped. This does not happen in The Scouring of the Shire. Actually.. I think it's pretty clear that there were two reasons for Saurama's fall. First was that the power of the ring was such that even to desire it had the power to corrupt the will. Second and most importantly, the Palantir - Saruman suffered the same fate as Denethor. Because Sauron had control of the seeing stones, it allowed him to corrupt the will of lesser beings who sought to use them. Or, as Gandalf said - "The hawk beneath the eagles claw" (or something to that effect :)
@jacobfreeman54444 жыл бұрын
Well, technically Saurman wasn't lesser to Sauron. They were of equal rank. But they each had spiritual powers unique to them. Sauron's was literally to sway others. His domination was just the most logical extreme he could take it. And he had an in to Saruman's mind. That jealousy Saruman had for Gandalf. So when they connected via the seeing stones Sauron had the means to use his power to convince Saruman that he should act on his desires. He could't completely dominate Saruman, but he could pervert him to following a parallel course. And if Saruman had obtained the ring he would have completely overthrone Sauron. But at the cost of beimg perverted into being just like him.

@@LoreOfTheRingsYT I think there is more to it. The valar and maiar are created by eru first. The maiar being lesser beings cling to particular valar. This is all before middle earth is existant. More experience player use all siege and missile ammo before even assaulting. Then slowly go in trying to minimize casualties for the campaign to come. Great video btw keep it up😁

Things in Middle Earth were already set into motion, and maybe he felt that he was on the clock and had no time for a conventional siege. Need to conquer Rohan ASAP and then move forward to the next phase of the plan. The Ring is out there somewhere and Sauron could get it first.

@@heysteve84 he could have also came at Rohan after a bit of siege and tried to ally with giving him a place in the new world. Either way his actions at helms deep was great read and watch but poor choice of action.

Is it true that Saruman was about to free Gandalf and ask for forgiveness when Ganadalf escaped from Orthanc?
@LoreOfTheRingsYT5 жыл бұрын
That's an alternate story that Tolkien considered. In the unfinished tales there are multiple different stories regarding this scenario. I think that particular scenario would have been really interesting, but it would not fit with Sarumans given nature!

What if saruman stayed good but made hes army for good
@LoreOfTheRingsYT4 жыл бұрын
Even then, the armies of Mordor would outmatch the west. After the battle of the Pelennor fields, Mordor had only used 1 of 5 armies. Saruman could probably have aided the fellowship, and Boromir would be alive. The fellowship might have entered Mordor with more members than just Frodo and Sam. We don't know what would happen tho!
@heysteve844 жыл бұрын
@@LoreOfTheRingsYT I agree. It was the wizards' charge, and the measure of their true ability, to enable and advise, not to raise armies of their own; his creation of the Uruk-hai is a huge perversion of his power, even without counting the fact that it was an _evil_ army. It is possible for a wizard to end a conflict before it starts, and omit the need for an army altogether. Had Saruman lent his personal aid, the Fellowship's journey to Mordor would likely have been a lot smoother and have a much better chance of success.

I like how you showed that Saruman was only beyond saving when he gave over completely to the greed and lust for power that can attach itself to any , especially those who already know power," true and terrible power". Power can corrupt like any vice. And Saruman was not without wisdom ,he simply chose not to use it.

Saruman could represent "Satan" you said at the end, no, surely not!!! If one character could be the "real" Devil in the LOTR, it's not even Sauron, but his master Morgoth, the Fallen Valar...Saruman could be a demon, and Sauron another one a little bit stronger….

In my opinion, multiple characters could represent Biblical characters. Jesus could be portrayed by both Frodo, Aragorn and especially Gandalf.

@@LoreOfTheRingsYT Frodo is the Lamb Jesus (what He did for us on the Cross 2 thousand years ago). Aragorn is the Warrior and King Jesus that Will return soon. Gandalf is what Jesus is doing right now: conquering the hearts of the "Free Peoples", inspiring them to seek His Light before His return as King of kings.

One thing that eludes me is if Saruman evil intent was mixed up with disappearance of 2 blue wizards. If so then it would mean he started plotting way back. One thing that is mentioned is that only Gandalf stayed true to his mission but not many people mention why. Radagast stayed "good" but basicly chose to care after nature more than people, Saruman went for power move and lost it, 2 blue wizards went mia and only Gandalf sticked to the original plan, but why? You said that Saruman was impatient, I think Gandalf would be too (in the end he was supposedly less powerful than Saruman) if not for Narya - ring of power he was given that was said to give power to resist weariness of time and also to resist tyranny, domination and despair. So you could say that basicly elven rings of power won - if not for Gandalf being able to inspire Frodo to take a quest (possibly due to Narya) or Aragorn to take up his duty and not to fear he'll end up like Isildur (also possibly thanks to Narya) things would've been pretty much lost.
