Interesting. I have the same pump, purchased it for A/C repairs, worked great for some time, then it took a dump on me, Me being me, I tore it apart. Surprisingly well built IMO. Found the issue and fixed it. they use little fiberglass "vanes" and one got stuck, seemingly from wearing a rough patch into the vane, after smoothing it out it's chugging along nicely once again!

Really good review!! I'm thinking about getting this and your review was a big help. Taking into consideration the elevation is an indication you know what you're talking about. Thank you for you time and effort!

Hey I have one like that. Mine's a little bigger I think. If you ever need a bell chamber for degassing stuff, I have one. I think it's 2.5 gall. I works for degassing my silicone molds.

From you review, mine just showed up today. I recommend buying a 1/2 ACME female to 1/4 NPT male adapter and/or a 1/4 Flare female to 1/4 NPT male adapter. Not much but A/C equipment uses the ACME or Flare connectors - at least not mine.

better work! jus ordered this pump because of this video. I'm laminating a few flat panels with carbon fiber

So the vacuum it gets is about 1.013250 - 0.9 = 0.11325 bar = 11.325 kPa. That is not good at all. Cheap pumps generally promises some Pas, not kPas.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by your last statement, but let me address your first one. This video was made at about 4500ft elevation. According to engineer's toolbox (www.engineeringtoolbox.com/air-altitude-pressure-d_462.html), the atmospheric pressure at that altitude averages 25.4 inches Hg. Day to day pressure varies a little, but assuming it was an average day then my measured 25.4 inches Hg from this pump was a perfect vacuum. Now in practice there's no way it was actually perfect, but pretty darn close. Your statement mistakenly assumes that I was at sea level, where atmospheric pressure is 29.9 inches Hg, or 1.013 bar. However, even if the pump was only pulling 25.4 inches at sea level then that would absolutely be enough for composites work. I like getting all the vacuum I can, but that doesn't mean that you can't make quality structural parts with an imperfect vacuum. In fact, some resin systems actually NEED a slightly lower vacuum in order to prevent off-gassing inside the laminate. I've seen beautiful and usable parts made with a reversed aquarium bubbler pump that couldn't have been pulling more than about 5 inHg. That's not to say that higher vacuum wouldn't give higher performance parts, but you definitely can make composite parts at lower vacuum levels. And I'd wager that the improvement in performance from 15 inHg to 29 inHg is less than 5% for most epoxy systems.

@@SasquatchComposites Thanks for the correction! I indeed had wrong assumption. My context is very different. I was looking for reviews of cheap vacuum pumps, but my purpose is not resin work.

@@user255 No worries. It's actually a question I've gotten a lot from people who just aren't used to the difference at altitude. Anyway, I hope you find a pump that works for your need :)

Thanks for the kind words. Yup, using what I've got for now. As the channel grows I certainly intend to upgrade my recording equipment, but as long as audio is clear enough to understand, making good content is priority #1. I appreciate the feedback.

Hi, Thanks for your video. Is there a limitation as to how big parts the pump can handle? Is the pump a "small part" pump only or has it to do with how complex the part is? Regards Ken Sweden

I thought you were supposed to put a shutoff valve in line with the pump and shut off the valve, before the pump, to prevent oil being sucked back through or something. BTW I'm not being a troll/smartass. I'm super new to composites, and just trying to understand. Great videos, keep them coming!

Generally the pump is either run continuously throughout the cure or some kind of vacuum chamber and switch are in between the pump and the part so the pump only turns on when the vacuum drops below a certain level. All vacuum bags will have some leak rate, even if it's very tiny, so it's good practice to use one of the two above methods to ensure the vacuum level never gets below a certain amount. With this pump I did have a tiny bit of oil come out into the tube the first time I used it for an 8-hour cure, but it stayed in the first inch or so of tubing coming vertically out of the pump.

I added enough oil but it wont keep suction when its off. It chills out for like 10 seconds then nearly all prrssure is lost. I have the same mod but am not sure why it releases suction when its off and i have enough oil..

Have you checked all your hoses and connections? Connectors would be my first suspicion. Are you using teflon tape for any threaded connections? You might consider just unscrewing them, putting fresh tape on and screwing them back in. Hope you're able to figure it out.

Every new pump, should be able to reach at least -999.9 mbar. There seem to be a problem with your hose. It is probably a tiny leak.

Still going strong, but I've spent more time building my shop in the last year than building parts, so the pump hasn't gotten a ton of use. I keep thinking I want to do a follow-up on this video, but I want to use the pump for a while longer before I do.

I'm really sorry to hear you had a bad experience with yours. It's interesting - mine has continued to work just fine, and though I certainly don't use it on a daily basis I have done several layups using this pump without issue. So it seems they may just not be consistent in their manufacturing. If mine was overheating like that I'd return it as well. Thank you for letting me know.

a sealed system is NOT same as atmospheric vacuum and should go to near 30" then use a true vacuum anylizer to know when moisture is being removed to required level which depends on how much volume system is and amount of moisture can be from 30min to several days and this min size pump wont work for more than residential home AC/Refrigerator air cooled systems at best
