It's funny because I get extremely irritated when KZbinrs call their jobs "hard" but at the same time I could never do it. Being isolated and talking to myself all day sounds like a nightmare, but not having insane bosses sounds incredible. Anyway, I love how real Satch is and I love this channel 🖤
@GreybellКүн бұрын
I think putting out content consistently can be hard for new KZbinrs that haven't found their niche. Most big KZbinrs (with a face or channel "spokesperson") have a whole team writing and managing the channel so it's not that hard to be a KZbinr if you've established a company.
@TheDawnofVanlife22 сағат бұрын
@@GreybellI mean but its hard to get there. Teams only are a part of maybe the top 5% of KZbinrs and content farms. There’s a few who do well enough to maybe hire an editor and a small team of two or three support people, but the vast majority of full time creators that bring in enough to quit there job don’t have “teams” and are one-man-bands. And everything depends on the content itself. The content production cycle of a commentary youtuber vs a vlogger vs an indie animator is not equal.

This is just any freelancing job, except it’s more fun and probably pays better. I’ve been a full time freelance translator for 18 months now (but I’d been doing it part-time since January 2008 pretty much), and I can tell you what he’s describing is identical to my experience with my clients. Your income stream is volatile and you have busy and quiet months throughout the year. So I pay myself a monthly “wage” by averaging my earnings from the previous two or three months for two or three months at a time, respectively. This is the only way to ensure some sort of predictability as a freelancer. Everything else he says is true for me as well, including not having to set an alarm or having fixed work hours. I also rarely work every day for long periods. On average I’d say I work maybe 10-15 calendar days out of the month. Not by choice, but because I don’t get work from my clients on a daily basis. It’s pretty sweet and I’ll never return to a desk job. I make a higher wage than the average one in my city.

What I've learned about the internet: It's easier to be terrible to people while hiding online than it is to be terrible to someone to their face. I'm an older woman (pre internet) and the difference in how people behave online vs in person is staggering. I've also witnessed how younger people that grow up with the internet are (in general) not as kind or understand the golden rule "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything". That rule isn't meant to take away your right to speech or your personal opinion as it is about just being a decent person and not mentally causing harm with your words. As the young people get older (and wiser 🙂) they will come to realize that people having their own opinion is what makes us interesting and will become more open minded and possibly even enjoy learning about other viewpoints. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Satch. I think you're a very interesting person and I enjoy your content very much.

@DaisyDreamingSims10 сағат бұрын
I can't speak for all youtubers who say it's a difficult job, but if I say it, I mostly mean it's hard getting anywhere when you first start out. It's hard to sit at this computer day after day, recording for hours, editing for hours/days, posting a video and getting 500 views if I'm lucky. The difficulty is in not giving up, it's in hoping against hope that "maybe *this* video will be the one to put me on the map," and it's in trying to persevere amidst the discouragement and almost constant feelings of failure. I have a very good, 6 figure, full time job outside of this, so if I never get further than I am with YT, it's fine, but man do I wish I could get to the stage of it being "easy" LOL

It always boggles my mind when people think they have the right to ask ANYONE how much they make. When I was working in Washington, D.C as an aid to a member of Congress all my friends and family were always asking me my salary, because Congressional aides get paid a very good salary, but not good enough for the work they have to do. It's incredibly stressful, depending on whom you work for, you get threats on your life, etc. It is NEVER ok for you to ask someone how much they make. It is 100% no one business. I love your openness and honesty but there are things you should just tell people "Excuse me, that's really none of your concern." And to those KZbinrs who say your job is hard, try working a laborer job, try working on an oil rig, try being in the military, those are hard.
@TheDawnofVanlifeКүн бұрын
As a former East Coaster who lived in Baltimore and the DMV, in the DC area its a weird badge of honor to talk about job title and salary … and its weird, glad I don’t live there anymore. Also did have a smaller channel around 25k subscribers that was monetized and it was hard because there was no clear value on any of the work you put in, just the hope you did the right things for the algorithm even if you worked all night just to post at the most ideal time. I also had labor jobs in the past (several) and at least then I knew what I was making for my efforts (and when I was unloading planes for FedEx I had health care). I think its hard to say if it is or isn’t ‘hard’ being a youtuber, family channels that just film embarrassing videos of there kids and rank in the $!$ …not crying for you. Animators…youtube is so imbalanced for them because of how long it takes to even make short animated stories. So they litterally can’t crank out videos in high volume. Its all dependant on the content.

I believe your job as KZbinr is hard when you're StyroPyro or NileRed and FBI visits you because your experiments are suspicious to them 😂 But also about working weird hours, I think it's an issue with working for yourself. My Dad was a car mechanic for some time and had his own garage connected to our house. The amount of times when it was 2 am and I went there and yelled at him to come home and don't be ridiculous is unreal. Especially when they worked together with my husband for some time. They basically lived there. So it's not only creative jobs. And as a person with really fucked up spine (since birth so yeah): Satch, do MRI, check it and then do stuff! Don't be stupid like me and walk for years with pain, it only gets worse if you do things that are wrong for the exact issues. And if you haven't tried them but want something good to temporarily ease the back pain before you know what's really going on, lidocaine plasters are a godsend. I just don't know if you can buy them OTC in UK, but I think it's worth checking out or talking with GP about it.

I wonder what your “normal” jobs were, sounded like they kinda sucked. 😂😂 I did make a bit of money on KZbin over the pandemic and now I have an office job, but its for an arts institution. I am making way more money then I ever did killing myself trying to crank out videos (and barely making it) and I like my job and my co-workers. And I have vacation time I can use if I want to. Like I can take a random Monday off just cause I need it. I think KZbin is the hardest BEFORE you make any $$$, its also the best before you make any $$$ because then you can just make almost any video you want and wait to see if it sticks. What I experienced is once you get monetized, 1 - you may not even see a check for a couple months still and that check is gonna suck, 2 - you kinda get claimed by feeding the algorithm of your Niche which takes away the freedom you had when you were first starting out. I basically feel more free now working for my current supervisor (who is amazing!!!) then I did trying to crank out youtube videos and I feel more comfortable taking my holidays now without feeling like I have to apologize to an audience. And I am planning to start a youtube channel for just fun because I don’t want to return to a life of filming all day and editing all night. But I did like making videos and being creative. But I want making money not to matter. For a non-KZbin job to be the right fit its certainly about working for the right company and finding the right “boss” that fits you. I still say youtube is hard to start, its hard to get monetized, but during my short stint making some money on youtube I did meet others who still love it even tho they are not as big as you (Satch) they are maintaining with it and living the lifestyle they want. But I hated it, it burned me out, and I love the desk job I have now. Cause now whatever I do creatively, it doesn’t matter if it pays the bills or feeds the algorithm. I am okay with my bill paying job and creative pursuits being seperate.
