Hi Jake, great video of course! Do you only repair metal panels? If you can show us a plastic pdr job that would be great. Thank you.
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, predominantly it is for metal panels, although there are some cases where it can work on plastic, but plastic is less forgiving than metal and there are so many type of plastics so the material is not consistent. I only really focus on metal. 👍

Glad to see you back always a pleasure to see you work your magic. The tool's on the panel is that a basic tool system. The pointed knock Down do you ever have chipping paint from maybe too hard of strikes
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
The tools I use are quite basic and simple, the knockdown will only ever mark the paint if the panel is hot, for example, in the summer on a hot day and the car is in direct sunlight, it also can mark the panel if the panel has been resprayed before and it hasn't cured properly, or if there is filler/bondo behind lurking under the paint finish. Otherwise if it is a good original paint finish, you will have no problems 👍

As always Jake, your expertise in PDR is remarkable. You should be teaching a class on Skillshare. Just one question - when you apply heat to the panel, how long do you hold the heatgun to that spot? I know you need to be very careful or you can damage the paint, but just a rough estimate of time elapsed for each one would be great.
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
Thanks George, you do have to be careful but I just give it enough heat so that it is hot to the touch, not burning hot. I get it as hot as the panel would get on a hot summers day. You do have to take extra care with light paint finishes as they can go yellow, but you just have to be sensible and keep feeling the surface as you heat it, I do touch the panel to see how hot it is getting during my repairs but I edit those parts out as they are not very interesting to watch. 👍

Hi Jake, why do we have high points? Pushing and tapping back seems time loss. Can there be a improvement in technique to eliminate self made high points? Such as pushing as close as possible to reqular surface.Thanks.
@1st_track_dents Жыл бұрын
Thanks Anil for your comment, unfortunately there will always be high spots to tap down, that's just the nature of the metal. You should read up on the theory of 'springback' In order to move/bend a piece of metal it has to be moved beyond the point you want it to be as metal is slightly elastic (mild steel, Aluminium HSS and ultra HSS all react differently). Also within a dent you get tight and soft areas and when pushing a tight area up, the soft surrounding metal will come up higher thus needing to be knocked/tapped back down. All the tapping down can be reduced by using the correct tips on your bar. Too sharp a tip will create many high spots, so through experience a technician will become more skilled in knowing what tools to use and this will in time reduce the time spent on finishing /tapping down. 👍

I really like your work, wouldn't it be better to shoot with silicone first? May I know the brand of the sticks? Greetings from turkey
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I like using the Glexo brand of glue sticks, however on this job the bootlid had been painted so that's why I didn't glue pull it and the access behind was really good for pushing. 👍

Hi Jake! how nice to see you again!! and as always good video friend! I have a question, instead of hot glue, did you use glexo cold glue? or is it still likely that the paint will come off??? greetings from Mexico!! and I hope you continue uploading videos that are great! A hug!
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
Hey, great to hear from you as always! If I know a panel has been painted, I will never use any type of glue from the outside to pull the dent out as I don't want to risk pulling paint and Glexo cold glue can also be super sticky. But it is more the fact that with cold glue pulling, you have to shock the panel with a slide hammer and that shock of pulling the panel may crack any filler lurking underneath the paint or pull off any paint that has not bonded properly from poor paint adhesion. Generally as a rule if I have excellent access from behind as I did with this job, I would always favour controlled pushing from the rear of the dent. I hope that helps 👍👍👍
