This bedroom hadn't been cleaned in over 4 years! Why? Well, it involved mice and a ton of garbage and toys. We wanted to give an 11-year-old girl her bedroom back. We cleaned it for FREE. We're happy to help. With this little girl, giving her a bedroom, her own space back was so worth the work (it took about 6 hours total). I do extreme couponing and now we've started clearance shopping and doing pallet sales....what was just one room in my house for all our couponing adventures has spilled out into our den, dining room, and living room, not to mention you can't even get in the couponing room anymore. We started to tackle this nonsense last weekend and gave up because, as you said, it's overwhelming and you don't know where to start. Now we've decided to start in the living room and work towards the back of the house. Listing things on the Facebook market and throwing away things that are broken. Eventually, everything will be where it needs to be and things that don't belong will be gone. It's just a matter of starting, getting the motivation to start, and not being overwhelmed before you can even begin!

The mouse problem is not limited to the bedroom. This did not happen overnight. All kids should be taught how to clean and return items to the proper home. Will she keep the room clean? She has some serious hoarding issues.

My mom had me cleaning tasks (dusting, vacuuming, emptying the waste baskets) at 10 yrs. old. I helped with doing the dishes, too. I got an allowance weekly, if I did my chores. Taught me how to appreciate cleanliness, tidiness and a job well done. Kids today are not learning life skills. *THAT CARPET SHOULD HAVE BEEN STEAM CLEANED FOR RODENT MICROBES *

Please, I'm not being mean. I just want to suggest, have you ever recommended therapy for hording and/or messiness. I know some people have a problem with it. That carpet - of all things - is what needed to go. Personally I’d replace with anything other than carpet, and get a washable throw rug - indoor / outdoor rug. Hoarding is an obsessive compulsive disorder that needs medical care. I’m glad they’re getting the support they need.

mom had a medical condition that caused her to overheat and faint from overexertion, that’s what kept her from tidying, however mouse traps are easy to set up, it’s also easy to catch the mice themselves with proper traps and seal off points of entry. honestly should’ve just called an exterminator smh

Throw everything away …they need to invest in some quality pest pest control somebody to go around patch up holes and put traps in place and put on Isolation gear when dealing with mice droppings

The mice haven't come back. We did throw away so much. Even the mattress. I'm proud of them for getting rid of so much. We prefer to keep what's still useful, donate what's in good shape and throw out the rest. We're a buy and throw away society. Their house is actually well done and mostly just needs cleaning. Until the rest of the house is cleaned, mice will still have a home there, too. We did the kitchen next.

My father was a psychologist for the state. He often would go into homes like this and the children would need to be removed - or at least a remediation plan enforced by CPS. It's sad because no one wants to cause further trauma to a family, but allowing the experts to know what is going on so they can assess is important. This is a child's life we are talking about, who may not have any option besides living like this. In my father's case, he once had a 13 yo girl, who was pregnant, who was living in a chicken coop covered in flies as the house had burned down. This was in rural Appalachia. Fortunately, he was able to get her removed from the "home." People don't realize how some people are still living like in some parts of our country.

We didn't look. But the whole house needed a lot. The homeowner said she's going to continue. Which is a huge triumph if she can. We're proud of her - few people understand the shame and overwhelm that's often part of how things get to this point.

We could only do so much. Although this video is shorter it represents many hours, I think we were cleaning this room for at least 5 hours with both of us. We discussed with the homeowner what tasks needed to be done. We had arranged for a company to donate duct cleaning but she said she could take it from there. We were a little sad not to go back but I don’t know if you can appreciate (or anyone) how hard it was and emotional it was for her to let us in. There’s so much shame and so many dynamics that are hard. Even reading the comments (and they do) can be hard. We’re so proud of how much they did after we left and while we were there.
