Man....Saturday mornings, or as we called it, Cartoon Day. What a time. Pillow forts, floor is lava, star wars gi-joe he-man MUSCLE things toys scattered across the carpet, an open box of trix to eat raw, parents in bed, and cartoons blasting. it was the one time of the week just for kids. loved it.

To answer the question you posed at the end, Dan, not only am I still a huge fan of Saturday morning cartoons at my age (39), but yes you covered my favorite Saturday morning cartoon of all time on this marathon and this channel. And I also appreciate the deep dive you did with some of the things I didn't know. That cartoon: Captain N: The game master

While I've seen some of these already, I can't help myself to watch them again. Saturday morning cartoons was something every kid looked forward too as they stared outside their classroom window. It was a place of adventure and wonder, where you were transported to another plane of existence where the rules of our world don't apply. I was born after the heyday of Saturday morning cartoons in the 80s, but I did love watching my own cartoons such as Xiaolin Showdown, Jackie Chan Adventures, Teen Titans, Static Shock, and more. But what really dominated my Saturdays was the "Japanimation" boom of the late 90s/early 00s with Pokémon and YuGiOh. They were the best of times.

As an '80s kid, something that I did made me feel connected even more closely to cartoons: drawing them, myself. It was hella frustrating to try to duplicate any image strictly from moving images on-screen, but I kept trying, and even got it right on occasion. If I could find a still pic (Polaroid photo, catalog, newspaper article, lunchbox, etc.), then I could copy the original art perfectly. I was creating these cartoon characters with my own hands!

My Saturday morning routine would start at 7am with reruns of 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' and 'Mighty Mouse' and then on to some of my favorites - Gummi Bears, Smurfs, TMNT, Garfield and Friends, Muppet Babies, Transformers, GI Joe's, the Real Ghostbusters, and many more...so much fun! Loved this collection video even though I've seen all your videos so far - this was a great ride!

Saturday morning cartoons were well established by the time I started watching them in 1968 (I was 5). My favourites were Jonny Quest and Thunderbirds, which our local station aired in re-runs at 5 or 6 a.m. I might have had trouble getting up for school, but you better believe I was up for those! The only thing I loved more were the Apollo launches, which Dad and I would always watch together. I miss you, Dad! 😥🤗🤗

In my humble opinion. The 80s was definitely the peek and the prime for being a child in any generation. I don't believe no other generation before an definitely not after. Had it as good as Gen X for being a child growing up. Imagination ran rampant an was truly the driving force for being a kid. Toys, Cartoons, Playing outside, Comic Books, Wrestling, music, the arcade. Even so called adult shows The A-Team, Knight Rider etc. We're all derived from the spirit of the imagination. Was truly the driving force behind all the joy in the world of being a child. Big shout out to all my Gen X Peep's. We had the greatest childhood.... 80s forever!

My boys loved Reboot, I sat and watched it with them and even pointed out when they "rebooted" it was with three taps like Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot a computer. We were bummed when it ended but when we lived in Bangkok we got to catch up on the rest of the show. My oldest son killed the Playstation game within a week and loved it, not as much as Kingdom Hearts but it still tickled his gaming itch. Unfortunately, just like with KH3, waiting for the revamped Reboot to co.e out, my son passed in Sep 2007 so never got to see Reboot get rebooted nor get to play the recent KH3. RIP, son, you really did not miss anything...lol

I don't mean to come across as a brown-noser, but I really enjoy these types of videos, where a KZbin channel takes previously-released short videos and strings them together into a sort of "mega mix" around a theme. It makes for GREAT background viewing/listening while working from home (and as Dan says, also letting you see the evolution of the channel's production).

It's a different timeline so it had no relevance to the animated series based on the original timeline. That's why it didn't get mentioned. It's fine. It's just a movie, just like the original.

Watched Saturday Morning cartoons from around 1978 to 1991 & then again from 1998 to maybe 2005 & that doesn't include the M-F 6am block through several years. The Littles was one of my favorite cartoons, but I loved pretty much everything. Got my oldest watching cartoons with me in 99 and his brother in 2002. Both love table top games, fantasy, jrpgs, fiction, etc & my little one is a writer. I think watching cartoons with them opened up their imaginations & by knowing what they watched & how many hours they watched for, never had an issue with fighting with them to turn off the TV. In fact, both my sons might watch anime, here and there, but they prefer to read or play tabletop games where they actually have to interact with other people. So they watched cartoons, but the TV wasn't a babysitter. Basically, I did the opposite of what my parents did. 😂

It seems like there was a bit of a revolving door thing going on, with a lot of the Saturday cartoons of the 80's being relatively short-lived. I do have some vague recollections of The Littles, Mighty Orbots, Kid Video, and Teen Wolf (yes, there was a cartoon series, look it up if you don't believe me), but my clearer memories revolve around shows like Voltron, He-Man, GI Joe, and Thundercats, which had a good bit more longevity comparatively. I remember Ghostbusters AND The Real Ghostbusters. I remember Bravestarr and Silverhawks, too--but that's about the extent of it; everything else kind of runs together in my mind. My all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoon was The Tick, but that came out in 1994, around the second half of my 8th grade year. Time gets funny when you get to a certain age, and god help me, I've gotten there...

I wasn’t allowed too much TV so I had to sneak to the lounge room and turn the volume down then pull out the big mechanical ‘on’ switch of our TV and wait to make sure that loud clunk hadn’t woken up Mum and Dad in the next room. Then turn up the volume to just a whisper and sit point blank in front of the screen for an hour or so until the house started getting up then when someone came in I’d be sitting on the couch and say I only just got there.

Chances are I've probably already tuned into the originals, but still nice to have them all in one big block!: Captain N: Naturally I grew up with the NES, so of course I couldn't get enough Nintendo! Of course the show did not age particularly well, but as a kid who didn't love seeing their favorite characters in a half-hour cartoon?! D&D: I do remember seeing this as a kid, didn't really get into the game until my teenage years! Would love to see them do a modernized version of the show as a reboot! Reboot: I swear I didn't plan my comment that way, LOL! yeah I was kinda into it one of the earliest CGI shows I can remember. IDK what they were thinking with a *live action* reboot of that show, though... Dragon's Lair: I do remember the cartoon, hadn't really gotten to play the arcade original (though I do remember seeing it on Starcade) love how they integrated the 'which way would you go?' mechanic from the game, though. Turbo Teen: I do remember that one, what a wild concept as a spin on Knight Rider! Schoolhouse Rock: definitely one I grew up with. wish we had more stuff like that nowadays!! The Real Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice: definitely enjoyed both of these! I do remember having a ton of the toys at least as far as Ghostbusters goes, like that sweet life-size proton pack?! or all those crazy figures from the show. Beetlejuice IDK if I had many of the figures but the show was kinda funny.

Such an important TV institution, which was part of the landscape of popular culture for so long, that multiple generations define the Saturday morning cartoon experience in very different ways. However, the basic experience of waking up early on purpose (as opposed to having a parent wake us up for school) is something that transcends the relative content of each respective generation's programming. It's the basic ritualistic experience that we all have such fond memories of.

9:49 Every time I hear about what happened to Saturday morning cartoons, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As a kid I noticed more and more shows disappearing and not understanding why. Back then there was no internet and unless you watched those awful variety shows like Entertainment Tonight, you wouldn't know immediately if a show was cancelled. For me it would be a year or so later and then asking myself "what happened to?...(insert cartoon here)". They basically tried turning Saturdays into a 6th day of school, at home, on the TV. Brilliant idea 😒 I understand that eventually things would've changed but wished it would've been through a natural transition and not from government bs. From what I've heard, the Sonic cartoon that ended in 2014 was considered the official end of Saturday morning cartoons.

The best Saturday Morning era was 1993-1995. Fox Kids was king and ABC, CBS, and NBC all wanted a piece of the pie. X-Men, Spider-Man, and Power Rangers all on the same day on the same channel? C’mon. My local Fox affiliate even had syndicated episodes of Dragon Ball Z years before it ever came to Cartoon Network. It was one of those syndicated cartoons that was on at like 6:30 or 7:30 to lead into Saturday’s Fox Kids lineup at 7 or 8. The Saturday Morning lineup was so strong that Fox actually aired an episode of Spider-Man and X-Men during prime time once. That was wild! I think it was the Spider-Man episode that featured Chameleon and X-Men was one of the episodes with Lady Deathstrike.

Every person thinks their generation had the best time growing up...but the 80s kids are just more right than others, LOL! Seriously, tho, the 90s had some REALLY strong shows and would have been a blast to come of age to, including Batman, Gargoyles, not to mention stuff like WWFs' Attitude era...I'm Team 80s all the way, but I will respect what the 90s brought to the table!

@@HandofOmega I was born in 1985, so I grew up watching a lot of 80s cartoons, too. The Hanna-Barbara stuff was heavily syndicated at that point. But there wasn’t a strong Saturday morning block until Fox Kids came along which became massive and forced the other networks to follow suit. And a good chunk of 80s stuff wasn’t as strong as 90s stuff with more limited animation. I liked GI Joe and Transformers, too, but X-Men, Batman, and Exo Squad blew those shows out of the water from a narrative point alone.

Great piece, but missing the piece about federal de-regulation of cartoon/products tie-ins in the early 80s that permitted tie-ins to the extent that they were nothing more than long commercials. See [CITATION] The shortcake strategy T Engelhardt - Watching television (edited by T. Gitlin), 1986 - Pantheon New York - tbat article is one of the coolest pieces of TV scholarship ever.

As a kid I ultimately looked forwards to getting up uber early on Saturday morning to catch the earliest cartoons and HOPE that the beta max I was recording my favorite cartoons on would not wake up my mom and dad. *we all know how loud those darn things were* While many argue it was a time that cartoons was made to sell toys, I would say and defend while this maybe the case the cartoons were fun to watch and I loved the characters music and exciting stories that each cartoon brought. I watched everything from Battle of the Planets, Hercules, Max the 2000 year old mouse, The Wizard of Oz, Bugs bunny and Tweety show, Thunderbirds, Astroboy. The Adventures of Pac-Man ,Super Mario Brothers Super Show, Smurfs, Snorkels. Then as time went on it was He-Man, She-Ra, Filmation's Ghostbusters, Bravestarr, Transformers, The Real Ghostbusters, The New Adventures of Popeye, Super Mario Bros 3, Captian N The Game Master, My Pet Monster, Gravedale High, Jem, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Little Wizards, Dungeons and Dragons, Droids, Robotech, Teddy Ruxpin, M A S K, Inspector Gadget, TMNT, Tale Spin, Gummi Bears, Gargoyles, Ducktales, Goof Troop, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck and then went into shows like Batman and the like. Every weekend Saturday was exciting and I remember each and every episode even to this day and have been caught even bringing up certain quotes to make people laugh. Yes thanks to cartoons I went on to become a music composer cause i wanted to compose music just like I had heard on TV. It also inspired many ideas I went on to create with a plan to bring the feel of Saturday morning entertainment back. I was heartbroken when Saturday mornings was then changed to Edutainment garbage back in the day and the only safe haven was YTV with many of my beloved Saturday morning shows on it. I still to this day watch and collect vintage cartoons like Jace and Wheel'd Warriors, The Pirates of Dark Water, Alf, Transformers and the like to relive those moments while along the way discovering lost gems like Galaxy High. Never be ashamed of watching cartoons I always say, cause it keeps you young at heart granted not all cartoons have aged well. Try watching Teddy Ruxpin now and when the songs kick in you feel a bit embarrassed to be even heard watching it lmao. It is a shame eventually that beloved Childhood past time became a relic just like my old Beta Max eventually became.

Educational aspects of children's television helped me save a life. After one Super Friends episode there was a segment where Batman and Robin demonstrated the Heimlich Maneuver to help save a choking victim. After seeing that episode I had a situation where I walked in a room and found a little girl choking on a piece of hard candy. Remembering what I had seen I instinctively performed the Heimlich Maneuver and saved her life. That little girl grew up, got married, and has children of her own today...because one day I saw a PSA about the Heimlich Maneuver. Thanks Batman and Robin.

I still show Mighty Orbots to people to this day, and the entire show (NOT just the opening!) is SO gorgeous that they can't believe how old it is...Loved the humor, too, like when the Narrator ramps up the tension my announcing that a giant wall is so tough that not even Mighty Orbots can break through it!...Only to have to sheepishly admit that he was wrong, when it does so, easily! (the only thing they never broke through was a silo made of "adamantium"...hope Marvel didn't hear about that) Actually, if ANYbody had a case of Orbots ripping them off, I'd say it was DC Comic's Metal Men...
