Dude, right?! I had the worst reverse culture shock when I moved back to the USA from Jordan/Palestine. Like, over there, people will laugh and dance and party all night while stone cold sober. It's not really taboo to drink, it's just culturally not really a thing, so even when there is alcohol, people don't typically get drunk. It was so damn refreshing. Then I got back to the US where alcohol is just a casual everyday assumption. I'm thankful I've never had an issue with alcohol, but damn, it wasn't until moving back that it really hit me how fucked up our drinking culture is.

Him really wanting to quit was a good thing but he went about it all wrong, the withdrawal symptoms sent him to the hospital. He was fine after the hospital stay and they got him on a rehab program. He's been sober for over 2 years and im proud of him

It doesn't matter if you're talking about the British, Russian, or people from China or Japan. Drinking and alcohol production were one of the very first things humanity invented and it's remained a strong culture touch stone for Millennia. I said our drinking culture is fucked up because of the widespread everyday pressure to drink, not because alcohol itself is inherently evil. I do drink recreationally, I love a nice glass of wine, but not heavily, and not socially or casually. But when I don't drink enough, it illicits a *strong* social response around me. Suddenly my coworkers need to know why I have a NA beer in my hand instead of a "real drink", etc. It's *weird* here if you don't drink. Nonstop jokes about alcoholism. Constant normalization of severe alcohol addiction. That's fucked up, and has nothing to do with history or other countries, it's just unhealthy. I can't tell you how many times I've asked algorithms not to sell me alcohol, I get ads every single day. It's a social expectation at every single general social gathering, ESPECIALLY with colleagues.
