Even more ironically, Jolson was actually quite supportive of civil rights causes for black Americans and pushed for greater integration of the entertainment industry for pretty much his whole career. And of course his most famous blackface performance in the Jazz Singer is really a skewering of the minstrel show and the way Jewish vaudeville actors couldn’t find mainstream success if they didn’t put on blackface.

Habiba Duval he was an extremely popular singer and film star in the early part of the 20th century who routinely wore blackface while singing (he was white). His most notable role was in the first ‘talking picture’ in 1927 called ‘The Jazz Singer’ where his character wore blackface (he was basically playing a version of himself as an entertainer, and not playing a black man directly). That his style was so accepted at the time is very telling about white culture at the time. In the 40s two biographical films were made about him, and the blackface was in those as well. I saw them on VHS in the 90s (my dad was an Al Jolson fan-I couldn’t stand him) the blackface was still treated matter of fact (like there was no disclaimer on the box or anything to put it into context). Quite shockingly It’s only been relatively recently that the tide has turned (and there’s still a lot of work to be done unfortunately).

Emily Rose "biracial" isn't even a scientific term 😂😂 humans are 100% African, 99.9% identical 💯🇺🇸 The eldest Europeans are African by tens of millions of years then Hispanics by tens of thousands of years. Hispanic African (Denisovan) dna is atleast 400k years old and the Hispanics have been in the Americas for atleast 60k years. Modern ethnicities didn't spread African depigmentation genes until 5-8k years ago 😂 "When it comes to skin color, the team found a patchwork of evolution in different places, and three separate genes that produce light skin, telling a complex story for how European’s skin evolved to be much lighter during the past 8000 years. The modern humans who came out of Africa to originally settle Europe about 40,000 years are presumed to have had dark skin, which is advantageous in sunny latitudes. And the new data confirm that about 8500 years ago, early hunter-gatherers in Spain, Luxembourg, and Hungary also had darker skin: They lacked versions of two genes-SLC24A5 and SLC45A2-that lead to depigmentation and, therefore, pale skin in Europeans today." www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/04/how-europeans-evolved-white-skin "You and I, in fact everyone all over the world, we’re literally African under the skin; brothers and sisters separated by a mere two thousand generations. Old-fashioned concepts of race are not only socially divisive, but scientifically wrong." "Explain that genetic evidence shows all humans are 99.9% identical and do not fall neatly into physical categories some people call races. The differences among us-like skin color and hair texture-evolved as humans adapted to different environments. They account for less than one tenth of one percent of our genetic makeup." www.nationalgeographic.org/activity/all-africans-under-the-skin/

And I bet you never imagined when you saw those Tina Turner and MJ Halloween costumes that future generations of pseudo-"woke" college students would decree that the choice of wearing those costumes to impersonate a contemporary pop music star was the most important and defining moment of the accused's lives! And that having worn those Tina Turner and MJ costumes 35 years ago the only act of contrition sufficient for the offense is to slink into the shadows for the rest of their lives!

How in the heck is it that Gov. Northam got the whole media to refer to it simply as a “blackface scandal”. That’s probably the least controversial part of the entire photo. Why is it that the media refuses to focus on the fact that he thought having a black man in front of a Klansman (aka implying horrible, terroristic events) was humorous. He needs to resign immediately, so that the party can get back to it’s true message.
@josephpalmer32105 жыл бұрын
You're right. Blackface in and of itself is subjective depending upon if it was done in malice or done in admiration, like in a Michael Jackson way. Northam's photo standing with a KKK costumed friend (or worse, that was Northam under the hood) is reprehensible and that's what makes that photo so disgusting and worthy of resignation.
@wolffillms5 жыл бұрын
Joseph Palmer Thank you! I definitely agree that that should be the focus of the media storm of attention that has landed on him and Virginia.
@wacobeer64695 жыл бұрын
I don't have a dog in this hunt ... other than the truth ... but doesn't it say something about the intent that there was BOTH an (apparently) white guy in "black face" in the same photo as a KKK hood? Doesn't sound racist to me. Sounds more satirical actually.
@wolffillms5 жыл бұрын
Waco Beer The fact that there was a white guy in blackface and a white guy in a KKK hood behind him is exactly why I took it to be so racist and horrific.
@wacobeer64695 жыл бұрын
@@wolffillms Would a movie about slavery suggest to you that the actors protraying the slave-owner characters in the film were racists? And BTW we don't know if the guy in black face is actually white. That's an assumption. Again, could be satire. Probably satire.

This state was a lot worse in the 80's and 90's. Michael Jackson had to fight to have his videos shown on MTV in the 80's. Even in the 90's it was hard to find black music if you did not have BET. A lot has changed. If you did things in high school and college is should not matter as much. People do a lot trying to impress others. We make mistakes when we are you and hopefully we learn from these mistakes.

The sketch satirizes this, but it's pretty clear that most present-day white politicians from the south who came of age in the postwar era (i.e., those in power now) did a whole bunch of things which, by today's standards, would be considered shockingly racist. It's probably more prudent, though, to judge them by their conduct since those indiscretions instead of labeling them as 'unredeemable' racists (especially because it's only going to be Democrats outing and crucifying other Democrats - a Republican in 2019 - wouldn't even consider this a scandal - it would just be a brief period of gaslighting and then a big ol' sweep under the rug...)
@eiyukabe5 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly this. This is why Democrats can never stay ahead of Republicans -- the party and the voters in-fight so much over relatively small issues while Republicans are for the most part in lock step. It's actually quite sad.
