No offense intended, but all he's doing is reading cue cards with Bogart's original 1942 dialogue. It's not as if he sat down and wrote this stuff himself. He's not nailing the talk as much as he's repeating it, word for word. :)

I am convinced that this is one of the best SNL sketches ever. It is perfectly written and perfectly executed. Both JK Simmons and Kate McKinnon do their parts way more than merely justice. Kate is, of course, being her comedic self. But JK is perfect. He does Bogart without actually DOING Bogart. And he keeps a completely straight face through the whole sketch. I doubt I could have done that. I watched Casablanca with my daughter a couple of weeks ago (August 2021). She had never seen it even though it's one of my all time favorites. Why? She's a Millennial and not fond of black-and-white, old AF, movies. As soon as it was over, I fired up KZbin and played her this sketch. She laughed her ass off. Made my heart swell watching her appreciate something I revere so much.

Well I am a GenXer and this film is old for me. I know about Bogart, I read up on him years ago when GQ magazine had an article on him. I then watched “The Caine Mutiny” and “The African Queen” and saw how good an actor he was. This sketch made me see “Casablanca.” Now every now and then I will punch up another Bogart film that I haven’t seen and just be amazed at his acting.
@badbiker666Ай бұрын
@@josebrown5961 I don't know what "Gen X" means, but if it means you're young, and you have opened yourself up to experience the great films of the distant past, then good on you! I wish more young people would spend some time appreciating classic films. Often, they think black and white means boring. They couldn't be more wrong, although I can see how movies like this, that don't have all the special effects we see today, fail to hold their interest. By the way, I called my daughter a Millennial even though I am not sure what that means, either. I thought it was appropriate when I made my original comment, now I am not so sure.
@josebrown5961Ай бұрын
@@badbiker666Why thank you! Oh and just so you know GenX are people that were born from 1965-1980, and Millennials were born in 1981-1996. I am the baby of my family and all my older siblings and parents are Baby Boomers so I kind of think like a boomer, old books, movies, cars, even architecture, I didn’t accept my GenX status when I first heard about it. And I love a black and white movie. We didn’t get a color television until 1972, and in 73 I got a black and white set of my own for my bedroom. When I went to college in the 80s I had a work/study job as a photo lab technician. I got to work in a dark room and develop black and white film for 25 hours a week.

All jokes aside, Casablanca is one of the greatest films.
@jeffreyriley87429 жыл бұрын
That's the joke. The dialogue in the movie is some of the best ever at this point so the skit puts completely ridiculous dialogue in Kate's mouth.
