She was talented beyond words; without ever knowing her, I genuinely loved Gilda. You are so missed. May you rest in peace. Gilda was pure magic.

You should see her do her slam-sketch on Nadia Comăneci. I don't know why Gilda hated Nadia so much, but she sure did destroy her.

It's very rare that you see an adult playing a little kid where it feels like an actual kid rather than an adult pretending to be one, but Gilda absolutely nailed it.

The quintessential Gilda sketch. A brilliant 5 minute monologue.

I am trying to figure out why I love this skit so much. I think this is legitimately such a great character performance of how little kids' brains work. Like I just fully believe Judy as a real person lol, in a way that is different from most SNL characters which are meant to be cartoons. This is exactly how little kids talk when they're just running their mouth nonstop and Gilda playing Judy is authentically funny to me in the way actual kids are funny. There are no real jokes in this whole sketch and most of what she's saying makes no sense, but it has that kid logic. And it's little things that crack me up like her still trying to get words out and keep up the flow even though she's out of breath. The ending is also just weirdly sweet. You never see Jennifer but it captures the whole sibling relationship of Jennifer hitting Judy and Judy just venting her way through it, using her imagination to destroy Jennifer as a little kid would do. And then what's crazy is the way the mom says her line, I actually believe Jennifer is really sorry and wants to play Barbies with Judy lmao. And so Judy immediately changes her mind and brings her back to life lol, because she really does love her sister and wants to go play with her. It's such a simple sketch but it nails something totally real to me.

I loved Gilda’s Judy Miller sketches when they first aired. Her SNL work was masterful, and when she interacted with the frequent guest star Steve Martin, they carried the scenes with a special energy. I think she cracked Steve up, for example when she plays Broomgilda in the “Theodoric of York - Medieval Barber” sketch. Just streets ahead of the others.

It's been a long, long time since I've seen anyone on SNL be trusted with a solo skit. It seems they stopped doing that a long time ago. And it's a shame because I think there have been a lot of cast members talented enough to pull it off.
@mantia39
@mantia39 4 жыл бұрын
The original cast members all came from other "off-Broadway" type of comic troupes....ie The Lemmings. Solo skits were common in those cicrcles. Watching these old skits,you can see their influence on the SNL of the70's. It was honest back then,innocent even. Nowadays people audition for the show,many not having those humble backgrounds.

Aiber Lane: Gilda was a comedian, now they just have hack-losers who kiss celebrity ass.
@SovereignStatesman

@@mantia39 Monty Python's Eric Idle produced the original SNL, bringing on the original cast including Belushi as seen in "The Rutles." This is what gave SNL it's original Python-esque charm and "zany-humor" wit. Then Lorne Michaels took over, and it became "New York humor" that was up its own ass and licking some celebrity's, thinking they're the intellectual elite while living packed together like rats.

I didn’t start watching SNL until season 40 so Gilda was way before my time. But after watching clips of her in various sketches and reading about the end of her life, I cried. She was one of the best.

It’s supposed to be awful it’s a little girl talking with herself and making a story up as she goes along, imagining. That’s the whole point. Back before cringe was an overused stupid word. Gilda did it well, and should have lived a long happy life and went on to do more things or even produce comedy shows for other comedians too but we lost her too soon.

The '70s was like this; Friday: My friend Jennifer & I were 13, We smoked doobies and partied at the all-night skate at Tri-Skateland. Saturday: We smoked doobies, ate a gallon bucket of peanut butter with soup spoons while laughing our azzes off at Gilda. Sunday: We smoked doobies, and went to TeenDisco at Electric Co. Disco to boogie on down. It was the best of times! (RIP Jennifer 😘💕)

DancesInCombatBoots ! Not judging you but much of SNL’s audience in those early years “partook.” It’s just one contributing factor as to why that original audience (now about 60) still says “SNL’s not as funny as it used to be!” The truth is today’s audience is far more sophisticated and the cast members are, generally, far more talented than the Not Ready For Prime Time Players (who might have been I stoned during the performance). I was part of that original audience and I’ve watched every season - nearly 500 shows. Don’t get me wrong, Gilda Radner was a true legend but if today’s SNL put this sketch on today, the “hook” would’ve been used.
