This has always been the quintessential "back when SNL was funny" skit to me. I had never attended any kind of 12 step meeting (13th step, relapsing, repeating) back then as I was like 12 or 13, but circumstances have led me through a few of them over more recent decades and Franken absolutely nailed it. Messed up people making no progress but acting like they deserve a cookie for one week of sobriety that was really only like 36 hours. And these meetings will definitely show you that alcoholics are far and away the worst addicts. Emotionally unhinged, scary, bipolar, abusive weirdos. Alcohol is an emotional truth serum - it truly unmasks the type of person you really are under all the layers of fakery and superficialiy that we build up over the years. A few drinks tears all of that right down. You get me drunk and I'm gonna tell you 20 times how cool I think you are, how we should hang out more often, how I like your hat, etc. But the true alcoholics are nasty and mean - you dissolve their outward facade of niceness and they are just cruel. That's how you spot an alcoholic - just two drinks in and they're wanting to settle old scores, tell you how awesome they are despite not being awesome at all, accuse their significant other of cheating and possibly even becoming physically violent, usually against women because they're bullies. Two or three more drinks and they're crying, either out of nobody-loves-me self pity or apology. Two more drinks and they're back to the abuse and then they pass out and pee on themselves.

The great artist Man Ray once said "They say I'm 'ahead of the times'.... I said, 'No: I'm never ahead of my time. I'm of my time. It's the others who are behind the times.'" America's sense of humor has changed in the last 20 years. Parody and satire - the playground of the underdog, especially in the conformist 20th century - have vanished as a new mainstream version of the underdog has emerged. But that new version nevertheless REMAINS mainstream. It's still subject to the same satire and parody that power was subjected to in the 20th century. But corporations don't want to lose money, so we lose humor. We're a worse people for it.

I remember watching this back in 1991 when it was new. I was twelve years old and I was in sixth grade. At the time, it seemed like everybody at my school in Missoula Montana loved The Chicago Bulls. They obviously were the most popular basketball team at the time. Especially with someone as incredibly talented as Michael Jordan. At the time I decided to choose my own favourite pro basketball team, so I chose The Portland Trailblazers. Their most valuable player at the time was Clyde "The Glide" Drexler. I was really surprised when in 1992, The Blazers made it into the NBA Championship against the Bulls. Unfortunately for me, the Bulls won. In all due respect however, Michael Jordan is a wonderful human being. He is incredibly iconic in the world of pro basketball, he is very genuine and has made one of the most impressively successful careers for himself. He is now a multi-billionaire! This sketch was hilarious because it was like the idea was for Stuart Smalley to be helping encourage Michael to force negative voices out of his head before each basketball game, so that he can focus better on playing and winning. However, Michael seemed like the whole thing was rather awkward, because he is generally very positive and happy. I love it when Stuart instructs him to look in the mirror and say "Hello Michael". That part always cracks me up! ~Dutch

The flashback of the dad trying to get that classic vacation pic of the kids with the Hollywood sign in the background had me CRYING with laughter. Yelling at them to get in the street when cars keep whipping around corners almost killing them. Stuart's dad is a SAVAGE. That mean ass, drunk ass father just makes the movie: When little Stuart comes up with Sir Cleans A Lot for the Ajax White Knight contest and his dad replies "More like Sir Eats a Lot" or when adult Stuart says he's writing a book and his dad is like "I've got a great title for you :Waste of Space" savage af. What about Stuart's bestie? The story-line for Laura Giacomo brings unexpected depth to the movie. Meeting her bio Dad only to have him hit on her is so messed up. Every time I watch Pretty Woman, I always think, yep that's how her ass ended up being a hooker (As if the two characters are the same.) Vincent D'nofrio gives a kickass performance as the Stuarts drunk older abusive brother who sobers up the "hunting" trip and realizes he has issues and both him and his Dad need help. I love you Al. Missing you in Congress. It's a sad world without you. We all make mistakes (or did you?), as I'm sure our very own president knows (or not). You're good enough, you're smart enough, and dog-gone-it people like you! You're the best Congressman because of who you are and what you have done! No stinkin' thinkin'!!

I consider myself lucky to have been alive during the '80s and 90's having seen The best athletes like Micheal Jordan play against my home town "Detroit" The best part was my team won the championship without taking anything away from Micheal Jordan he inspired the rest of the team to become great players and lead the Bulls to dominate the NBA in the following years.

Commenting from 2020.. Its so surreal seeing how fresh and enjoyable of an audience reaction to "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt" 2:12 🤣 ... It's weird, I guess it hadn't become uber clichéd yet 😎

Back when people were able to perform their skits without staring at the cue cards, and "breaking" wasn't the only way to get laughs.

Thats why i loved Phil Hartman...i think hevwas the best vast member ever. He would sell whatever character he played and wouldn't break character. Love and miss you Phil.
