"Seven decades of regret packed into four minutes of music". I struggle through long meandering passages trying to explain my impressions of anguish,, regret, apology and goodbye. You sum it up in less than a sentence.

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

The words of a man who had everything, only to realize in the end what he passed up along the way. If a person can watch that video and NOT feel it, they need to check their soul. After that, you need to fill the night with some Butt's remix or Champaign Taste by Home Free... something to bring you up... Take care and keep saucey.

What you didn't see at the end was him closing the piano. I'm not sure if it is true but from what I heard, it was the last time he played it before he passed away.

Yeah there were several parts where he closed his eyes and all I could think was "Nooo you are missing important parts of the video!" Like the moment where he is just clutching his hand in obvious pain echos so well with verse he is singing.

When I hear this Johnny Cash sing this song, it touches me deeply. Sadness flows through me. Memories of my life partner for 10 years. He had everything his heart wanted. But his battle with depression, PTSD, medication and finally alcohol cost him his life. He died unexpectedly three and a half years ago. He was just 2 weeks 60 years old.

Saucey, excellent emotionally honest reaction from you. Let me share reconstructive criticism with you ... You were so caught up in your emotions that you didn't play the video all the way to the end. The last few seconds of him closing his piano lid and stroking it with his hands was very strong symbolically and was a great ending. I've heard other reactors say that that is one of the fast rules of reacting ... Make sure to always play the song all the way to the end because you don't know what you might miss. Please keep up the great reactions!

Yes, a video is generally a complete work. Well-made, the video will enhance or develop the meaning of the song further. There was a tie when songs or other forms of music were only experienced by the live performance. Then with recording and radio, you could hear them at any time, but not have any visual element. Video allows a further development, in the same way that opera and musicals allow. You are right that the piano-closing scene is an important coda - it amplifies the sense that Cash was putting a finaity to his career, and in fact he was. Another thing that I think reactors should do, es[ecially with 'made with internet in mind' videos, is to see what comes after the primary music video. Often there is a messgae from the band that should be considered along with. You can tell pretty quickly if it is just a 'thanks for watch, please watch more, buy CDs, and send money' message. Home Free has had several where the message after is an important addition, such as Everybody Walkin' this Land and One Voice. Others, like the Butts Remix have a bit of outtakes that are fun and add to the enjoyment.

I have heard this reacted to from others, but you are the most real. Nick, when you feel, when you pause and it's obvious words are landing painful blows....that is when I most identify and appreciate you. This last song of Johnny's has the most meaning of any of his songs, reflecting as it does on all his life. The good, the bad, the ugly truths. It is stark, somber, sobering. We all begin this process together, but we don't end it all together and that's a hurt like no other. When we have lost our real selves in the journeying as well, like Johnny, we can only voice the reality we see at last, too late to change, too late to share with those who stood beside us so long, only to say farewell too soon. This is a timeless farewell, and an apology, for not seeing sooner. We need to learn this lesson now, while we have time yet to make the changes. Love you Nick. Love you.

Unfortunately I've seen a lot of people 'reacting' to the video, not merely the song, with eyes closed as they focus more on the music. That doesn't work with this video. You really need to see each frame to fully get it.

I appreciate that you really felt the music, both the lyrics and the way Johhny sang them. But you did do one thing quite wrong. This is a music VIDEO, and you closed your eyes for most of the second verse (and you didn't let it run to the end, where Johhny shuts the piano like - as someone said below - shutting a casket). This is one of the best music videos I have watched, and I watch quite a few. The videographer does an absolutely fabulous job of demonstrating the pain through his visuals - and you missed it.
