Eli, Layne and J are deities of death, trying to bring Earl's soul across. Geoff plays the gatekeeper angel of death who is not convinced that Earl is ready to die yet, but the other 3 are trying to convince Earl that he is ready to die. So they are basically battling over Earl's soul. Earl ends up deciding he is not ready to die and "defeats" the deities and returns to life where his husband awaits him.

This is a great crash course for the storyline! I would also point out that at the start of the video, Nick places a metal coin or medallion around Earl's neck. Currency like this was often placed on or with the dead to ensure their passage into the afterlife. Notice that at the end of the video, "Baron" who is not only a god of death but creation and can heal (Haitian Voodoo) is the last of the gods to disappear before Earl returns to the world of the living. When he wakes, the medallion/coin is GONE, likely taken by Baron in exchange for Earl's healing. A couple more hints that Baron wants to see Earl make his own choice given his situation... he is often on the other side of Earl from the rest of the gods, almost as if keeping watch and protecting Earl while the others argue over him. And during "Under Pressure", Baron's skull cane prevents the weapons of the other gods (mostly Guardian) from making contact with Earl, giving him a chance to "break free" and "play the game", having a hand in his own destiny

If you want to see their families, check out their cover of "Daddy Sang Bass." At the end everyone comes on... it's really sweet. The creativity is out of this world. Thanks for taking it personally and supporting them. They don't repeat things or do what other people do because they see what they're doing as art. Can't take shortcuts when you're doing art, and it shows.

Seriously though, VoicePlay really does get slept on a lot. They're artists, they're geniuses, and that's why I love them. I love Home Free to the moon and back, and I really enjoy PTX, but VoicePlay is just special for me. They push themselves and the boundaries in pursuit of what they create. I love that. I'll recommend one that a lot of reactors miss because it's not on VP's channel, but it's a 21 Pilots Mashup done with Kurt Hugo Schneider over at his joint kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3yXfaCegq2IbtE It's quirky and insanely creative and has some damn fine vocals. Enjoy! And thanks for the reaction to Queen in 5, it was awesome.

The characters are loosely based in mythology, not a show. Different gods of the dead from different cultures disagreeing over what to do with Earl's soul, very creative idea for a story, told by a very creative mash-up of songs, sung with very talented voices. Enjoyed your reaction a lot, liked the good quality video/sound, liked the pauses when you had things to say, liked the references to Queen showing you knew what this was based on, liked the 'fan boy' going off about VoicePlay. Please react to more VoicePlay/Geoff Castellucci content anytime, I subscribed and I'll watch you.

After Tony Wakim left to do Pattycake Productions with Layne it took them two years to find J.None, such are the demanding requirements to be part of VoicePlay.. Yes that's Earl Elkins Jnr. He left i think in 2020 and then J.None in 2021 and it took less time to find Cesar who has been a revelation. This was a reaction to Earl having a health scare. They came up with a storyline using Queen songs. Anubis, god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld, in ancient Egyptian religion . By weighing the heart of a deceased person against Ma'at (or "truth"), who was often represented as an ostrich feather, Anubis dictated the fate of souls. Yama, is a deity of death, and the underworld who predominantly features in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Guardian who ,though not named, would be the Norse God Heimdall, The Guardian and Sentinel of Asgard. Baron, (Baron Samedi) one of the gods of Haitian Voodoo. As well as being the master of the dead, Baron Samedi is also a giver of life. He can cure mortals of any disease or wound, so long as he thinks it is worthwhile. So we see the gods on one side trying to claim Earl's soul, whilst Baron, on the other side, maybe considering healing him. In the end of course Earl wakes up from what might be just a dream, and returns to his loved one. That's the idea Geoff and Layne always do a lot of research for their songs as you can see.The man with Earl is his real life husband.

Voiceplay is probably one of the most underrated a cappella groups because they didn’t win the sing off they were up against Homefree and Homefree won. J Non decided to go into the Navy and Earl had been with a group from the beginning he grew up with Layne and Geoff but he said that after nearly 20 years he had just got burned out and needed to take a break but they are all still very good friends.
@patriciaschuman4205

Geoff stated in one interview that he doesn't understand people who decide to do an a cappella cover by just taking the original arrangement and changing out the instruments for voices and doing it exactly like the original, (or as you said, 'copying and pasting'). He was like, if that's all you are going to do, there's absolutely no point in recording the song, just listen to the original. And that certainly seems to be Voiceplay's mantra in choosing how they work.

First, the gentleman with Earl is his husband. He also appeared (with Geoff, Layne and Eli’s wives) in the Boybands video. The part where they were standing around talking about ‘his big wallet.’ Layne and Eli pulled bits from Queen’s catalog of music specifically to tell a story. This was just after Eli had a health scare while they were on tour. Aside from Eli mentioning Freddy Mercury’s interest in mythology, the rest of this comment is based on the video and my own research as an amateur student of mythology: Anubis (Egyptian) (J None), Cerberus (Greek) (Layne) and Yama Nirvana (East Asian and Buddhist) (Eli) are all guardians that convey souls to the underworld. There is visible tension in the video between them and Geoff’s character, Baron Samedi (Haitian Voudou). Baron is the master of the dead AND the giver of life. A person will not die if Baron refuses to dig their grave. So while the others want to get on with it, it’s the Baron’s decision. It’s only right that he is the last one to face Earl before Earl’s return to his life.

So they are all fighting for Earl's soul while his in a coma luckily he survives & that's his husband Nick with him. Their transitions in a medley are always incredible. Their videos never get the views they deserve only Moana has 40 million & that isn't anywhere near their best!

After discovering Geoff via 16 Tons, this was my introduction to VoicePlay! I was stunned by the amazingly smooth transitions and there was such great synergy between their vocals. Of course I know better now, but at the time I wouldn't have thought it possible for Geoff to do a rock belt that high! The sheer creativity to use mythology and a Queen medley to produce a story like this boggled my poor brain. Needless to say I became instantly obsessed! You are so right, the time and effort these guys put into producing such polished and nuanced performances deserves soooooo much more love and attention! You asked why the video doesn't have more views. Unfortunately, for as talented as they are, for as creative as they are, they are also severely under recognized for it. They have a decent sized following, of course, but that's about as far as their reach goes. Voice Play has found a niche they fit into, one they're comfortable in and are super good at, but it's not "mainstream" enough to get them the recognition they deserve outside of the acapella/theater world. Unfortunately the same can be said for the other two groups as well. Yes, everyone's heard of Pentatonix. However, the vast majority of people have never heard more than the name, or, if they've heard them at all, it's been at some award show or show honoring someone. They don't fit into the styles of music most people listen to. That's why the videos don't have more views. That's why, even though they have all the talent and creativity in the world amongst them, they're not household names as they deserve to be. Fun reaction, though, man. Can't wait for the next one.

Last week in VoicePlay's patreon chat they touched on the subject of effort put into their videos in relation to KZbin views. They deserve so much more attention than receive, and I'm glad you feel the same way. It has always felt like an insult that so many people dismiss them, or ignore them in favor of the other Big Two (and I don't bring them up to take anything away from them; they deserve their spotlights as well). I've always appreciated their willingness to take risks, to push boundaries, and also to laugh- even, or maybe especially, at themselves. THANK YOU! I've NEVER understood why Voiceplay are always the underdogs in terms of views compared to Pentatonix and Home Free. Not only are they crazy creative and way more willing to take musical and visual risks, but they do pretty much all of it themselves. Sure Pentatonix and Home Free are awesome and make great videos too, but they have production teams behind them who handle all of the donkey work that goes into producing their stuff. With Voiceplay, Layne and Geoff do all of the vocal arranging, (with Eli getting into that more too now,) Geoff does a lot of the sound editing, the sets they use are from Layne's production company, Eli does a lot of the lighting... they are VERY involved in every stage of their work. And yeah, the theme of the video is based on a real-life health scare Earl had. Layne, Eli and J.None are various gods from the afterlife, fighting over Earl's soul, while Geoff is a kind of 'guardian' figure who's trying to defend Earl from them. Earl 'defeats' them all in the end and makes his way back from the brink of death to be with his husband (the guy in the video at the end.)

As a mythology nerd (Freddie Mercury was too) I enjoyed the story behind the story. J None as Anubis is of course the Egyptian god of the Underworld and weighs Earl's heart against a feather so show he is worthy of the afterlife. Eli is a Hindu death god, who uses his mace to force spirits to stay in the afterlife. Layne in the gray fur coat and sword is listed as "Sentinel" but is clearly meant to be Cerberus, dog sentinel of Hades. Geoff, though, is where it gets FUN! The Baron is from Haitian Voodoo. Unlike all the others, whose jobs are to welcome the dead and KEEP them dead, the Baron is the god of death and resurrection. In other words, he has the power to bring Earl back to life. He is there to see if Earl WANTS to live strongly enough. This is why the others give him side-eyes and toss some shade at him in the lyrics of "We Are the Champion", because he's, in a sense, a godly rival. His cane works to protect Earl from the others, like Cerberus' sword which would have severed his soul from his body, and the weight ("Pressure") of Anubis and Yama's hands. Notice, he blocks the sword right away. As Earl grows less grieved and shocked and more determined to live ("Show Must Go On") he has to first fight Cerberus if he wants to escape the afterlife, then the other two, but the Baron is the ultimate decider, thus the "final boss." They face off, the Baron sees that Earl is firm in his stance to live, so he starts to turn away, and that's when he poofs. At the very end, Earl no longer has his gold medallion. Such things could be used to pay off the Baron and convince him not to take your soul. Was that all planned by Voiceplay? I'd like to think so. It makes for a fun story.

Glad you enjoyed this and love your reaction. Looking forward to more of your VP reactions (just subscribed), and agree it is a crime it doesn't have more than views. It is one of my favourites that i keep coming back to again and again. Eli and Layne put the concept of this video and arrangement together. I believe this was filmed shortly after Earl had an operation. The gentleman with him is his lovely husband who we also see in Daddy Sung Bass and Boybands in 5 minutes. If you look further into their characters you find out more information. J.None - Anubis an Egyptian god who would weigh the deceased's heart against a feather from Maat who was the goddess of truth and justice. If you had lived a good honest life your heart would be light as a feather, but for every bad thing you had done your heart would weigh a little heavier. Eli - Yama Nirvana I don't know much about this one. Yama is the usher of souls responsible for making sure souls are sent onto their correct afterlife. Layne - Guardian (Sentinel of underground) i am wonddering if he is along the lines of cerberus, the three headed dog (Layne is wearing a fluffy /faux fur coat). Cerberus is a guardian of the afterlife and respondible for ensuring no one escaped the afterlife. Which is why when Earl is singing about "just gotta get right out of here" Layne pulls out his sword as if to say time to get to work and stop him from leaving. Geoff - Baron (possibly Samedi) - the Baron is a master of the dead but also giver of life and can cure mortals of any disease and wounds. In return for "payment" and at the end of this video Earl's pendant is gone.

You're missing so many good ones - My Shot, Phantom of the Opera, Chandelier, Attention, Scars/Low, Panic at the Disco in 4 mins Pt 1 & 2, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Boy Bands in 5 mins, and Don't Stop Believin' at the Acapella Camp! I promise you will NOT regret it! And that is Earl's boyfriend/husband, Nick. Not sure if they are married or not.

Thanks for a great reaction and appreciation of the talent and creative genius in this complex one! Great comments below explain it all so well. This was based on a real life health scare that Earl had and was one of the last ones Earl did with Voice Play. Earl decided to retire and take a break from the demands of touring and being a member of the group for so long ( Earl was a friend of Geoff and Layne performing with them since Jr High school.) Earl, Eli, and J None are the Mythological gods from other cultures trying to bring Earl across while Geoff is the gatekeeper not convinced that it is Earl's time yet. The songs are so well placed in the story telling here and watching this one a few times brings a better understanding of it. Earl fights death, regains consciousness and returns to life and his awaiting husband (Earl's husband also makes an appearance in "Boy Bands In 5 Minutes and "Mama Sang Bass"). I think you would really enjoy reacting to "Mama Sang Bass" as it has all of Voice Play's family member show up in the end of it.

Color me paranoid but I don't think youtube is always showing the real number of likes or views on videos. ??? Not that they're doing it on purpose but I've seem lots of things that I was sure had more likes and views. Idk. And Eli is such a rocker he is far BEYOND perfect for this cover!!!!!! It's beyond me how handsome Geoff looks like that too. Guyliner or no. I think I just died and he slapped me back to this Oklahoma farmhouse in the land of the living and fangirling lol.

I know this is old . But as a new VP Patreon and subscriber here, I 100% agree. They are underrated. I do think one reason is that people cannot hear the bass because of their speakers. Another is the lack of a label pushing them. And the other is that they refuse to just cover the top songs. They are too creative to sing just for clicks... They make art. And the masses rarely appreciate art.

VoicePlay’s issue on recognition is that on “The Sing Off,” they lacked the right mix of personnel (and they were up against Home Free). With Geoff, Eli, Layne, J-None, and Earl, they’d have won Season 5 if such had occurred. They’ve been amazing since that line-up. Sad to see Earl and J-None gone, but the addition of Cesar and a steady rotation of featured artists has served them well (although the red-blooded male in me wants to see Ashley Diane join them full time).🥰

Rachel Potter too, right, though they are both quite similar as a red blooded male. I'd struggle to split them if you picked songs at random. Both stunning ladies.

Much as I love VoicePlay, I cringe when I watch some of their performances on The Sing Off. They weren't VP, they were "Honey La Rochelle and 5 Guys." Maybe things would have gone better if Rachel Potter had been available, as originally planned, but still their arranging skills then were a long way from the brilliance of Queen in Five Minutes here. Compare their "Don't You Forget About Me" to "Ring of Fire" by Home Free, and it's easy to see why HF won. Totally agree that VP could have won season 5 had there been one, at the rate Geoff, Layne, and the others step up their game. As good as they were and as long as they've been at it (Geoff and Layne have been singing together professionally since high school), they still keep getting better. They totally deserve a lot more recognition.

Yes, it's ridiculous, it's a shame that VoicePlay is so little valued for the impeccable work it always delivers. I don't care if Home Free or PTX won a competition, this is about talent and VoicePlay and talent are synonymous. These boys deserve much more recognition.

I'm not sure why Pentatonix has over 19 million subscribers to Home Free's 1.44 million to VoicePlay's 1.16 million other than, perhaps, a better handle on promoting themselves. They began posting to KZbin within a year or two of each other. As far as I'm concerned, you can't choose between them for quality of performance, though they occupy somewhat different niches. PTX has done pretty nearly every style of music popular in America; pop, EDM, rap, ballad, rock... They virtually OWN the market for xmas music. Home Free does almost entirely Country music, which limits them. VoicePlay ... I dunno. They do some music that overlaps with PTX, and they do a LOT of music from movies, particularly Disney. I'm a Pentaholic first, but VoicePlay has a lot of stuff I think is just awesome, and you can't beat them for theatrics. But PTX has quite a number of pieces that include dressing up for the song - like "Making Christmas," or "My Favorite Things," or "Cheerleader." Even "Royals" includes costumes to set the tone for wealth. So... shrug. Having over a million subscribers isn't exactly FAILING, now, is it? ;)
