This is one of those they did after the label dropped them and they were putting themselves out there. It’s where the couch thing starts coming in a lot and ends up being a “ thing “ for them

This video is to me the quintessential early PTX. Talent, great arrangement, simple video, and their ordinary clothes.
@heidifruchtl3542 жыл бұрын
So, do your goosebumps have goosebumps? Definitely baby PTX. I believe that they were in Kevin and Avi's apartment. Can you imagine being a neighbor of theirs? And that might be the same place that daft punk was filmed and recorded. I mean, they did videos in some crazy places. Kitchens, I think a bathroom once, garages, stairwells, living rooms. You know, budget appropriate.
@hernameispekka_Rebecca2 жыл бұрын
The fact that they all lived in the same apartment complex is so amusing to me. Honestly, sounds like a great sitcom setup. The start up acapella group living across from each other! They even have built in comedy, struggles and "ships", haha!

Well, the parts you're wondering is the genius behind pentatonix. It's the thing they won 2 of their grammys for. Much credit can go to their arranger Ben Bram but the band themselves has a big part in the choices. As far as I know Scott and Kevin are the ones mostly involved in the arrangements (and in the past Avi), but they all do the pre-arrangements. They call it "circle jam" where they just jam and improv and record it on their phone and send over to Ben to try and decipher out and clean up. There is a cool video called something along the line of Pentatonix jamming on the fly that I think you would love! Their process is basically the same nowdays except they also make sure to get the arrangements as sheet music so they can all practice on their own. Here is the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZvLlYhnp9Cnpsk Another more recent video of them arranging (but mostly recording) their newest album is this gem: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2eThH6BoLZ_p9E It shows what they're doing, but explaining how they make the choices? I think that's just their genius, musical intuition (Someone from Home Free commented on twitter once that Scott has one of the best musical intuitions in the business). And practice.

Kirstin is the unsung little superhero of the group. She's the best I've ever seen at knowing exactly where to place notes for background harmony that makes it sound like more people than there are. I love her voice and when she's singing a solo, but when she's singing the lead there's a hole in the background, because she's not there to fill it.

She doesn’t get enough credit.

SauceyDad, If you would like to see part of PTX process of making an album I would recommend "The Recording of Evergreen" which shows how sometimes they will try one line multiple times in various ways before everyone on PTX says it is good.

Feb 6, 2012 was when they released their cover of Somebody That I Used to Know and it was the first “viral video” to launch their KZbin presence! This one ushers in the infamous couch setup! Jacob Restituto, a musician, has interviewed Ben Bram, their arranger, Ed Boyer, their mixer and Ben H, their videographer of late who also is Kirstin’s boyfriend & soon-to-be father!! All 3 are fantastic interviews on his channel.

I'm so glad someone recommended Restituto, because I loved those interviews, especially Bram and Boyer. It's fun to hear people who know what they are doing explaining it a bit.

They used the same "island sound" to part of their performance of "Stuck Like Glue" for "The Sing Off". Kevin's mom is from Grenada, so he could have come up with this idea to do it in this video. PTX is coming to the end of their contract with their record label, so that has to come off first before they can release anything new.
@hernameispekka_Rebecca2 жыл бұрын
Yep, they are in a bit of a limbo state with where to release new music right now. But last night they performed at a Grammy-related event honoring Joni Mitchell, which is likely to air in the coming weeks, so that's something coming up at least.
@sannalopperi-vihinen2332 жыл бұрын
Oh, I thought they already changed labels, though I suppose it's more complicated than just leaving and taking both Bens with them. I was sort of wondering it the new label also signed Messer and Superfruit and KirstinTM etc. or just PTX.
@PtxXtp2 жыл бұрын
@@sannalopperi-vihinen233 nope their current contract is up sometime in April so they've been trying to figure out who to go with or if they'll stay with rca. They did already change management so that could be what you're thinking. I guess for kirstie and superfruit the label would only matter if either make more music. Messer has never been with rca. Pretty sure his music is independent.
@sannalopperi-vihinen2332 жыл бұрын
Yeah, probably thinking of the management. I knew Messer is independent, but considering Mitch apparently had to sell his apartment to finance Roses, I think he might not be opposed to being signed on a label.

Here you see the classic “couch set-up” that they emulate in the Bohemian Rhapsody video. In fact in Bohemian they revisit several of their earlier video set-ups. The moving couch signifies their video journey’s as well as their career as they have moved forward. ☺️.

Yes, this is one of tracks known as the "couch videos" ... post label drop, pre everyone realizes how great they are. Another "throwback" that gets overlooked is their first video that was paid for by a corporation for advertising purposes. Their cover of "Starships" is so good with some rap, some electronic noises (made by them, of course). kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWeuaaChrtl4g7s

Telephone is another really early one. There are a couple live performances of it. It was the song they did for their audition for the Sing Off. There is alive performance of it by Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch during the intermission of their High School choir performance. Also a couple with Kevin and Avi. Fun to see them even before they were PTX. 💕💕

Now you know where the comments about the 'couch' came from. Most all of their early videos centered around a couch. There was one on the steps to the apartment building some of them lived at. One was in a kitchen. And I think I saw somewhere that most of the early videos were recorded with an i-Pad. Think about that and how good they sound!!

Hello Saucey Dad - this is a great one. Sing it Mitch - hitting every note so clean and clear - indeed - these 5 - they set the world on fire. Scott with that bit of reggae. Love PTX! Now that you have done the Sing Off Journey and this one "We are Young" you should react to The Lucky Ones, the title track from their 10th Anniversary Album....just to understand how they see their own progress. To understand how they do the arrangement - The Making of Evergreen, Behind the Scenes of Can You Feel the Love Tonight or Behind the Scenes of Bohemian Rhapsody, or even the short advertisement for the 2021 course PTX taught on A Capella, shows a bit of how they do the arrangements.

This is the infamous "mustard couch" in Avi and Kevin's apartment that Kevin also talks about as where Avi was writing "Love Again" if you listen to the interview in with the off mic performance of that. Their kitchen is where the Daftpunk medley was filmed. Yes it's awfully early because Avi's "don't forget to subscribe" line isn't even in there yet. Avi's album comes out on May 20th.

Precisely lol. The well oiled unicorn fueled machine that is, PTX. In both forms both origination & current. That is why they work. Their versatility, talent, humility, creativity, ingenuity, chemistry, passion, HUMANITY & RELATABILITY, are why they are able to fill the world with such joy. Each one contributes SO much of themselves & it shows. They have the ability to effortlessly & flawlessly soar through each arrangement because when 1 steps up front they simply "shift". Bass singing, Scott covers bass. Mitch singing, Kevin can cover tenor, Kirstie singing, Mitch can take over soprano, Mitch can beatbox some too! And KO brings out beyonce when she's necessary & the sounds he creates from body rhythm & ambiance sounds.....insane. Evergreen is so perfect of a representation of their work ethic. They are what humanity needs as cliche as it may sound. I recommend Imagine at least once a day both on youtube, facebook and even in everyday life. It's such a monumental yet underrated statement done the way only PTX can do. Keep reacting sir. Hope to collab with you one day. SauceyPentaFry here!

SauceyDad, Just watched a video of PTX performing on "Italy's Got Talent" where they did perform Daft Punk but there is an unusual video out there that is supposed to be this but instead of the Daft Punk song they perform We Are Ninjas and they have Italian Dancers performing with PTX. When you look do not get confused by the video being 1 hour and 1 minute long because for some reason it is the same PTX performance only on this video about 10 times(only need to watch one)

Hard to believe that PTX pretty much started out just sitting on that couch. That couch is famous lol. The video was covered?? I didn't notice, I was to busy listening to the song and being amused by your facial expressions. Can't wait for April's requests to start being done. You're going to laugh yourself right out of your chair.

Did you ever expect to be an a cappella fan when you started your videos? I’m so glad you did. I’m enjoying yours so very much. As for Avi and Kevin knowing how to work together so seamlessly, they started as roommates during the Sing Off, then shared an apartment after that. Kevin made two comments that have stuck with me. The first was how he’d often wake up to Avi singing opera. The other was that they were so in sync that if one of them needed to take a breath, the other one would know that and cover for him. Pretty amazing! And did you hear what Avi was doing in this song, especially towards the end? Thanks again for a great reaction. You are just great to watch. Now go to bed!

I'm a bit surprised that you needed to cover the video for this one to get around the *bleeping* KZbin copyright Nazis... this was after they were dropped from the label contract they won and were just uploading their videos to KZbin on their own to get exposure and start building their audience. There should be no issues from SME, as they were independents at this point. If there was a copyright issue simply on the song, then there should be a block on their own video. I really don't understand all the logistics behind the idiotic YT algorithm that decides all this BS.
