Someone once posted a comment (don't remember who) that sums up the three big acapella groups quite accurately in my humble opinion: If these groups were high schoolers, Pentatonix would be the student council, Home Free would be the ones who hang around the parking lot, and VoicePlay would be the theater kids. I think that is about right. Geoff has his own channel with some really nice songs. VoicePlay also has a VoicePlay mini channel. One of Voiceplay's best is the Halo Theme (must watch the dedication at the end too).

Just 2 months ago I met these guys through TikTok and since then I haven't listened to anything else, just Geoff and VoicePlay or VoicePlay and Geoff. When I'm not listening to them, I'm watching someone react to their videos. I will listen until I get tired of their voices (I never get tired when I hear something so incredible, so help me God) 😅

Same here...I found their Valhalla Calling last year and loved them but I didn't have the time to do a deep dive because I was so busy, but then this year I retired and I'm listening to them for hours a day. I even contemplated making my own reaction channel (I am also a musician and acapella vocalist so I have LOTS to say) and making it exclusively about VoicePlay, Geoff, and any past present and future guests and members who are doing their own thing. I love watching these reactions to VP, et al!

The best part of waking up is -- well, it's the coffee. It's always gonna be the coffee. But I've developed the habit of watching your reactions while I drink that first cup and I absolutely love this. So stoked that you picked this one to react to -- it's a hell of a performance, isn't it? Geoff's deeps and Eli's metal screams just get your blood going. When they first dropped Hoist the Colours it was affectionately known as "the reactor killer" and it left a good few bodies in its wake LOL. You did well! And there is SO much VoicePlay I think might be just your kind of thing -- Queen in 5 Minutes and Carry On Wayward Son for classic rock, My Mother Told Me (another reactor killer and a Viking song), Twenty-One Pilots mashup with Kurt Hugo Schneider, and This is Halloween and The Oogie Boogie Man (both from The Nightmare Before Christmas -- VP loves Halloween). I could go on, but I stan VoicePlay without shame. Loving these, and rock on with your journey! Edited to add: now you've seen/heard this, just for fun on your own time you might enjoy watching some of the reactors reacting to reactors listening to this song like kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3-4hoR3ncdqoac (link is to King Family Reacts reacting to QoFy, but then Brad Steele reacted to that and Patrol Gaming reacted to THAT and it got kind of Inception deep after a bit. Good times, good fun!)

The guy in the center is Jose Rosario Jr. He's more of a guest performer than a member of the group but he was also in their video for My Mother Told Me, which is the Viking number. This is more pirate and the song is from Pirates of the Caribbean At World End. The one in the white shirt on the left is Cesar De La Rosa, he's been with the group only a short time. Check him out in their rendition of If I Were a Rich Man/Girl. The one you were talking about is Eli, which is pronounced L-E. The two in the front are Layne Stein (beatboxer) and Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci (bass). He and Tim Foust are friends and Geoff has worked on a couple of Home Free videos. He has several solo videos out that are not to be missed. House of the Rising Son, Headless Horseman, Monster Mash. Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold.

Yep. That's just how this song hits. There have been precious few reactors who have retained the power of coherent speech by the end of the video (and those that did, I suspect were not listening very closely). One reactor walked off without saying a word; another leapt out of his seat, forgetting he wasn't wearing pants at the time. This song absolutely slays. If you want to hear something that hits in a similar manner (and also has a seafaring theme), check out VoicePlay's cover of My Mother Told Me, which is an old Viking song. It also features Jose Rosario Jr, and until this video came out, it was VoicePlay's showstopper. Being of a similar genre to Hoist the Colours, I also consider it to be HtC's spiritual ancestor. But if you want to hear more of Eli's (pronounced 'Ellie', short for Eliezer) intense rock vocals (I love his rasp as well) and more rock-genre covers, then look up their cover of Carry On Wayward Son, or Queen In 5 Minutes. Both give Eli a few spotlight moments, and Queen in 5 MInutes also lets you hear Geoff's own rock scream (which is startlingly high for a bass singer; of course, the man has a 5 octave range, so...) Oh, but you mentioned haunting! Look up Geoff's cover of Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold for another powerful piece of music. It's on his solo channel, featuring 4 Geoff's, and it's haunting, bassy greatness. With some tenor and baritone thrown in, because why not? Geoff can reach those notes, as well as descending to abyssal depths.

They are really good, I like the detail they put into their costuming, and of course their voices are great. Nice reaction, thank you! I think you will enjoy your a cappella experience more if you don't compare one singer to another. For example, Avi, Tim, and Geoff all have incredibly wide ranges and are simply amazing in their own right IMO, but they also use different singing techniques that allow them to reach low or high notes with varying degrees of quality and clarity, for lack of better words. For example, Tim is a master of the growl technique, and the way he can sustain pitch for prolonged periods without loss of power is just amazing. He can also sing breathy bass (see Brothers in arms) which is a challenge for all singers. Geoff has mastered the subharmonic technique, which requires great skill and allows a singer to sing a higher note that sounds one octave lower (gross oversimplification, technical discussion for another time LOL), and Avi can sing overtones (two pitches at once) and uses "fry" more than the other two singers, but they all use it. For me we, as listeners, miss out on the experience when we think "this is higher" ,"this is lower". I like to see how those notes fit within the arrangement and how they match the lyrics of the song. For example, both Tim and Avi's bass drops are always organic to the song, while Geoff at times writes arrangements that show his ability whether it's needed or not, for theatrical effect. You can see what I mean if you listen to Tim's and Geoff's versions of "Misty mountains" - completely different musical effects, both incredible in their own right. There is also the question of how much studio production is used by the three singers. Ultimately I need all three of them in my musical world! But like with children, I love them all "equally" LOL

Knew you would love this one!! (Just for info, it's on Pirates of Caribbean III.) Definitely worth staying up late for, wasn't it? LOL. That's the same reaction a lot of us had ("What just happened?"). It's awesome! Geoff and Tim are both incredible with their deep bass, neither better or worse, just enjoyably different. Geoff has a wide range as he can go pretty high into tenor range as well as hitting sub-harmonic levels (you can hear that in this song at one point, but also in moments in other songs like Queen in 5 mins, Oogie Boogie Song and even Little Mermaid)--also the Queen one really emphasizes Eli's (pronounced L E) rasp that you liked. VP makes a lot of their videos for the eyes as well as the ears. Will say if you ever need a pick-me-up, listen to their version of Mr. Blue Sky (one of my all-time fav songs and now have two versions I adore). Have fun on your VP journey!

I love VoicePlay! I see that others already have given suggestions that I can only agree with. If you want to try Geoff Castellucci’s solo work too, his new one probably releases tomorrow Friday (it’s already on his Patreon). It’s a Christmas carol (not acapella but he does all the harmonies himself). Geoff and Layne do most of VoicePlay’s arrangements and even though many of the songs actually are “popish”, they always make them interesting and fun and almost always better than the original imo.
@phoenix94483 жыл бұрын
The current members are Geoff (Jeff)(bass), Layne Stein (baritone & vocal percussion), Eli Jacobson (tenor) and Cesar de la Rosa [in white] (can cover both baritone & tenor parts). Geoff and Layne are the only ones who have never changed. In a video this year (2021) when Geoff announced Cesar joining the group said they are in the process of looking for their 5th member. Which is the reason for all the different guest singers. btw Geoff and Layne have been singing a cappella together since High School [1997] when the band first started out. J None (baritone) joined in 2018 and left in June (this year 2021) to join the Navy. Cesar joined (baritone/tenor) becoming the newest permanent member in July (this year). Two great pieces that have J None in them are Oogie Boogie's Song (Nightmare before Christmas) and Friends on the Other Side. He came back as a guest singer for Friends on the Other Side. It dropped this year for Halloween. Geoff's range is great, and you can hear it in their cover of Oogie Boogie's Song.

The gut who's rasp you're - very rightly - nerding over is named Eli (L-E) and he is indeed a vocal beast. If you like the haunting, rock-ish ones definitely go for Carry On Wayward Son, Queen In 5 Minutes, Eleanor Rigby (which Eli arranged), Trapped (their Billie Eilish in 3 minutes - just trust me), definitely My Mother Told Me (Viking song you've probably heard everywhere on tiktok). Their cover of the Halo theme and their You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch are also ACE. And if you go back further, check out their Phantom of the Opera because that shit in acapella is crazy and Rachel Potter goes OFF. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their songs. As a fellow metalhead, even Pop-y songs you swear you hate they will make you love. And their Disney stuff is beyond compare, regardless if you're usually into it or not. Especially the Nightmare Before Christmas

Yeah, that was my reaction the first several times I’ve heard this. And I still listen to it on the regular. The harmonies are insane, and everybody has a chance to blow you away. Ok, the names. Top left to right-Cesar (SEEsar) De La Rosa, Jose Rosario Jr. (featured guest, I want them to keep him), Eli (ELee, short for Eliezer) Jacobsen. Bottom Left to right-Layne (Lane) Stein, and Geoff (Jeff) Castelluci. I don’t know the name of the dude on the floor. Anyway, this was a terrific reaction! If you like this style, you should listen to My Mother Told Me. Also another more traditional a capella song is Carry On Wayward Son. And If you’re into the Halloween vibe, check out The Emperor’s New Clothes by The Bass Gang (it’s a newer group-they have several songs out now, and they’re all really good). ` Again, great reaction! 👍🏼 (PS, It’s Colours because it’s from Pirates of the Caribbean, At World’s End, and they’re all supposedly British, so Disney used the British spelling.)

it's Jeff - by the way, the song is telling the lore of how the first pirates came into existence [The King and his Men - as in, king of the pirates] and the Queen is the goddess Calypso, When it says they bound her in her bones, it is talking about binding her to her human form, which limits her power [which is how the beat her] - by beating her they gained the power to rule the seas, but they were also cured to live forever as long as they continued to sail [thus some men are dead and some are alive and others [the first pirates] sail the sea]

I would strongly suggest two of their videos for you. Queen in 5 Minutes allows each singer to solo and it’s incredible. Geoff, who as a teenager wanted to be a rock tenor, gets to show off his range. Eli shows off his rock licks (yes at one time he fronted a rock cover band), and Layne even gets a beat boxing solo. The other is Panic in Four Minutes, which is divided in two parts. You’ll want to do both for the reaction, since the two add up to about four minutes, and part 1 has a cliffhanger. Their baritone in that one, J None, hits a note that’s high for most tenors. And Earl (who’s no longer with the group) does Brendon Urie proud. I think you’d love both of these, and both contain the theatrics that VoicePlay is known for.

it is pronounced JEFF. This is amazing, was arranged by Geoff and they do their own lighting/production. Most of their videos are very theatrical as opposed to PTX or HF...they all 3 compliment each other. Geoff, like Tim, has an amazing range, and a great solo channel...if you check him out, look at 16 Tons, Blackbird and a couple others. This is the one that has destroyed most reactors :) one even got up and walked away. I was not liking a lot of their earlier stuff, but they have taken it up several notches since. They were on the Sing Off with HF but of course, HF won that year. You may want to check out VP "Oogie Boogie Song" and/or Geoff "Headless Horseman" even though halloween is over ;). I love Tim's bass...my only complaint with VP, and Geoff specifically, is that they USED to drop bass bombs just because...not becuase it fit the music....NOT the case with this or some of their other recent music (If I were a rich man/girl).

Eli is pronounced more like El-Lee as it is short for Eliezer. Geoff and Tim have pretty much the same awesome range. Check out Geoff Castelluci’s solo stuff on his channel like 16 Tons, misty mountain cold and black bird.

The bass is Geoff and it's pronounced "Jeff". This cover is amazing. You might enjoy their cover of "Halo". Layne is the beat boxer. Eli (pronounced "Ellie") is the bald guy you liked with the rasp. The guy with the one blue eye and one brown eye is Cesar de la Rosa. The larger guy in the back center is Jose Rosario, Jr.

I just worked a 60 hr week.... In a warehouse.... on my feets..... with a bad knee that is now the size of a cantaloupe.... Do I gotta wait until I am dead to sleep? This is one of the best VP songs ever. Granted they are all great. You should check out their version of Attention next or Trapped (Billie Eylish in 5 Mins) but if you do Trapped you gotta watch them do Panic in 4 mins Part 1 and Part 2 after that one because they go in order. lol Also if you are a huge rock fan they did a cover of Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas. Oh oh or Queen In 5 Mins

He pronounces his name as Jeff but spelled Geoff. I feel you with the speaking English (Words are hard) LOL. You should check out Geoff's solo tracks. I specifically love his cover of John Denver's Country Roads.

This is why speaking another language other than English is so important :D German and French really helps with word etymology and pronunciation.

If you want to hear more of Eli’s raspy metal voice, I highly recommend: My Mother Told Me, Carry on Wayward Son, Halo theme, Panic in 4 minutes, and Queen in 5 minutes.

If you want a good sample of Geoff Castellucci's solo talent (there are many, and different folks like different songs), try Sixteen Tons... I'm a bass, and love singing along with him, so I have to admit a certain bias. Another one the whole group did that features his range and character skills is Oogie Boogie's Song. But you can't go wrong with this group anymore than you can with Home Free.

Don't worry, this song has broken many reactors.😂. Geoff(Jeff) is bass, Layne beatboxer, Cesar in back left, Jose Rosario back center, and Eli(Ellie) is the bald rocker tenor. Geoff arranged this masterpiece.

Yes! You have now been touched by The Reactor SLAYER. I think the score is Voiceplay 10 to the Nth power, reactors 0. As I have said in past comments, the very 1st reactor is that skeleton in the back on the floor, defleshed, jaw dropped!!!!!!
@CrimFerret3 жыл бұрын
This is one of their best and it's broken more than one reactor. You really do need to check out their cover of Carry on my Wayward Son.

Just going off your background if you go to Geoff’s channel he does a few readings, his Edgar Allan Poe stuff is amazing including “ The Raven” ☠️

Oh by the way when you listen again, listen to Geoff and how long he holds that final note.
@aussiebloke609 Жыл бұрын
The three tenors (in order) - ethereal falsetto, smooth and mature, and rock god. A triumvirate of awesomeness. And the arrangement blended them so well your mind often fills in the final note in a phrase that they didn't actually sing.

Geoff is Jeff & the rasp is Eli is Elly. This is a pirate song from pirates of the Caribbean at worlds end great reaction. Top far left is Cesar DeLaRosa, middle is Jose' Rosario Jr.bLayne is the percussion+beatboxer)

That song is absolutely the best that Voiceplay has done for sure! As for names, There is a Jeff not Joff, Layne not laynee and Eli just like Ellie. Weird, I know. They are awesome. Try Geoff's "monster mash" solo project or "Friends on the other side" from all of them. great reaction!

Voiceplay eargasms are the best, and it's even better watching someone else get their first, too :D

Add their Nightmare before Christmas video to your playlist for closer to xmas. You will love it. Because you have young kids, you will probably appreciate their compilations of Disney stuff too. They are the Theatrical one of the trio of groups and go all-out with loads of them.

Who knew acapella could sound like this, huh?! 😁 These guys are all crazy talented in their own right and this is one of my favourites of theirs. My very favourite is If I Were a Rich Man/Girl. My favourite in this group is Eli (pronounced Ellie), and I never get to hear enough of him. He's so versatile it's a bit ridiculous 😁 This song broke a lot of reactors. You did well compared to some. 🤣

Since the medieval theme is your thing you're going to have to check out My Mother Told Me. I don't care much for the song itself, mostly the actual history behind the lyrics, but the performance is absolutely brilliant. Geoff ( as everyone has been pointing out pronounced "Jeff" ) is...I mean, he's just...you see you just have to...I can't. Just watch the video, when you have time. Speaking of Geoff, I can't, just watch the video and medieval themes, check out Geoff's solo work on Misty Mountains Cold from LoTR ( remember to breathe ). This reaction was exactly what I was expecting when I helped suggest this one. The looks, the facial expressions, the emotions...all of it. And, I could hardly wait to see it all play out. You did not disappoint, for sure. Lots of fun to watch, to remember my first time hearing this one. Thank you for doing this, thank you for taking to heart our suggestions. We'll see you on the next one.

Voiceplay's Halo will also blow your mind, especially if you're a Halo player. Geoff's subharmonics are insane and almost unmatched. Geoff does a lot of his own work as well, similar to Peter Hollens, duplicating himself and arranging/editing pretty incredible works. Too many options to suggest just one, you'll probably do them all eventually.

I've never seen before, Today I'm just listening to voiceplay reactions. You I'm loving your enthusiasm so much for my Boys... I'm now going to subscribe 😊 And it pronounced Jeff 😉

Welcome to the full-blown theatricality that is VoicePlay. If their vocals weren't so on point, they couldn't sell the drama. Jose (the guest artist) is the burly bearded guy in the back; Cesar (the new kid) is the fellow with the "dead eye"; Eli (EL-ee) is the little psycho guy in the back hitting the high notes; Lane, the demented beatboxer, is lower right; and Geoff (Jeff) is the bass with the deep-sea low notes. Geoff is famous for doing his own solo videos where he harmonizes against himself, revealing an awesome vocal range. Check out his cover of "Blackbird" Eli is hitting C5s like he bought them at a discount, while Geoff is going below Sea level (See what I did there?) to hit F1 (The lowest F you can find on a standard piano keyboard).
