QD: I will buy the Speed 1 again. I have 200 miles on my first pair so I’m going to hold out a little bit and see if they come down in price. They are an amazing shoe. I ran my first marathon in them and 4 weeks later set my PR in the half. Easily my favorite shoe for racing. Something about carbon doesn’t work well with me. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not fast enough or heavy enough or a combo of both, but it just didn’t seem to benefit me all that much. The responsiveness and benefit I get from the speed is significantly better and it’s also way easier on my feet. Add the low price and for me it’s the best racing shoe out right now. Great video Seth!

How long have you been running in the Speed 1? Any noticeable decline in the midsole? I bought the Speed 1s in December for a spring marathon that got canceled, and thinking I'll just store them (unused) until a November marathon, but worried that the midsole won't be the same after 11 months.

@@matteocorbetta3120 I think Seth would do well to do some more comprehensive analysis of how he's rated shoes over time so he can be aware of any large biases or inconsistencies. It seems like (fairly often) what he's saying verbally and the number rating he gives don't really line up. And essentially all his scores end up being between 6.75 - 7.75. I hope Seth starts taking the ratings and measurement issues more seriously, because now that he has a big following, his reviews actually have a substantial impact!

I have four pairs of the speed 1 - I love it that much. Have ordered the speed 2 from the US (as they are not in Australia yet). Recently discovered the Asics NOVABLAST . So Speed 1 for racing and NOVABLAST for easy/recovery runs. I believe these two shoes from Saucony & Asics work as a perfect pairing for slower, heavier runners like myself. Have tried and used a lot of other shoes, NB 1080, Beacon, Zante Pursuit, Rebel - Saucony Triumph, - (No NIKE as my feet are wide).... but the Speeds are my absolute favourites. We all have different types of shoes, its good to find the Shoetuber that matches your preference - for me I seem to like the same shoes as Meagan from Believe in the Run. Really enjoy Seth's review - full of energy. A bit confused why your shoe of the year last year hasn't seemed to of excited you. Saucony have listened to the feedback and they are even releasing a trail shoe version of the speed to fit the needs of some who want to run off road. Thanks for your review !! Keep up the great work.

QD: I ran my first 26.2 distance (virtual marathon) in the speed over a lot of other shoes and I cannot complain. Since then it has been one of my go-tos on long runs. I wouldnt hesitate picking up the speed 1s again, especially if they drop, since i have a ton of confidence in the fit and and feel. I also found that its hard to run slower in these, it just kinda pushes you along. So if the intention is to go slower.... dont speed :-D

Being a school teacher and philosophizing over the meaning and value of a grade, I frankly have no clue how the endorphin speed could only score a 7.8/10, or the equivalent of a C+. Your scale confuses me at times. You say this shoe is a “great shoe but not the best”, and I still don’t know how that equates to a C+ value. “Great” in my mind would be closer to an A-, which would break into the 9’s on a rating scale. Interested to see if any shoe ever even breaks the 8.5 mark for you because the endorphin speed might be the most versatile and worthwhile running shoe ever to most people, and that’s a 7.8.
@paulgeimer138
@paulgeimer138 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Seth, your detailed ratings would be more helpful if they used more of the full 0-10 spectrum. When nearly every shoe ends up with an overall score between 7 and 8, it's hard to distinguish the real winners from average shoes. I know many of the categories cancel each other out somewhat (ex. comfort vs. weight), but maybe there's a way to make the ratings even more useful. Thanks!

Agree it’s comfortable and pleasant at slower speeds, though it’s a waste of it to use it much for that. I just used it today for a medium paced run with 15x30 second intervals near the end. It’s pretty damn versatile for such a great shoe that is also marathon-worthy at a great price.

I couldn't resist! I pre-ordered a pair of the V2 in the red colorway(which looks bold and futuristic; very eye catching) for $123 with the roadrunnersports VIP +rewards! I've got 2 pairs of v1 with 250mi and 145mi so i dont know when i'll be running in V2, but its worth it! Let's be honest--running is a couple things aside from actually moving our bodies, outside in nature; its a bit of an eating contest and a fashion show. I'll add that to the collection, tyvm! QD: I am absolutely going to buy the Speed 1 again. It's my current shoe, and pretty soon I'll only have the ability to run in one shoe heading into officer candidate school this fall, so the speeds take the cake! My ankles aren't strong enough yet for the metaspeed sky or rebel v2.
@xtamhor
@xtamhor 3 жыл бұрын
Actually i would not buy the speed 1 again. They are high and narrow and soft and unstable. Sole is 1cm narrower under foot than my New Balance1018V10. I mean I really have to hold on with my toes not tonfall off the shoe in corners. The speed 1 is Great for tempo run 5K or 10K perhaps but slow runs or longer efforts they give me pain in my ankle joint and I pretty much starting to hate the shoe. I much prefer my NewBalance 1080v10 or Beacon 2 for short efforts. Both of those are stable and light and dont have any issues with them.

Same, am normally a forefoot runner. I usually run in the Reebok Runfast Pros and the Saucony Speeds are my “take a break” shoe and still allow me to move fast if I want. They’re just fun and I find them very comfortable. The full on butter shoes are usually to buttery for me. I’ll still always want the Reebok ground feel, extreme light weight, nimbleness and leg workout but the I definitely feel my calves for 2 days after a half marathon in the Pros.

QD: I would pick up the Speed 1... that being said, I just picked up the Endorphin Pro 1 for $112 from Saucony. Pinching those pennies. Also, I think another shoe to compare it to is the Puma Deviate Nitro (non-elite). Its the same price at $160, has a carbon composite Inno-plate, similar stack height, similar, breathable mesh uppers. Its a trainer for the Deviate Elite, much like the Speed is the trainer to the Pro. I actually have both, and I feel the Puma Deviate Nitro is more of a tweener shoe... and Puma Grip is amazing! I would also like to say it's amazing how you have created the vlog with your family. These recent vlogs have reminded me that life can throw some curveballs in your training program, but the mental focus is just as important as the physical training. For you to keep focused, keep pushing, all while maintaining the structure of your family during this time is truly an amazing accomplishment in of its own. It reminds me that even on those tough days, turning that door knob and pushing through the suck leads to success, and focusing on the positives, despite all the chaos around us, can turn that suck-cessful run into a successful run.

QD: I have almost 550km on the Endorphin Speed and purchased a second pair late last year, before the Speed 2 came out. I kind of disagree with your assessment. I run my easy run in my old ones and they seem to be better for these runs as they age. You never get anything like the type of kms in them as do. We non-KZbin stars. I'm recovering from a health scare and am running my "long runs" in the new version. They are not as well suited to this as I had hoped and will probably need to get a dedicated long run shoe soon. My point is, the Endorphin Speed gets better for easy runs with age. I did run a virtual marathon/50k run in them last August. They were fine for that purpose, especially if you're running around 4 to 5 hours.

I really like this running shoe. A few things that I can offer as advice. It's not for new or novice runners. It won't offer the kind of stability or cushioning that a shoe like the Adidas Ultra Boost offers... and on that, these two shoes have NOTHING in common apart from looking aesthetically similar. I've had practically every shoe in the Adidas Boost range, from the first Energy Boost to the Ultra Boost 21. The Saucony foam is not as spongy or absorbing as the Adidas. It's firmer, tho still enough bounce for what its intended for... SPEED. They are vastly different running shoes. With the Ultra Boost 20... which was my favourite of the Boost range, I'd run my usual 8k at 33 minutes... always hovering around this time. With the Speed 2 I shaved 1 minute 30 seconds off my time on the FIRST run. Which is huge. The Speed 2 is far lighter and it's got more of a rocking motion at the bottom which propels you forward. You really have to get used to it if new to the shoe. I would advise giving them a walk or two to bed them in before your first run. They are very comfy, but quite narrow... I was a little like Bambi at first. If you do come from a cushioned shoe like the Adidas Boost, you should be careful of sharp corners and icy conditions. My first few runs I felt a little tightness in my knees and ankles, but that's because my technique changed and I started running less from the heel and more in a mid-foot strike. It also targeted different muscle groups. I wear calf compression with them which helped with fatigue from the faster pace they MAKE you perform. The Speed 2 don't like you running at a more casual pace IMO, you don't get the benefits from the foam or the confidence of the Boost for slower pace. Adidas Ultra Boost - Spongier foam. Good for heel strikers as most of the foam is at the back. The Speed 2 foam is more spread out back of foot to forefoot which helps with mid and front foot running techniques. Ultra Boost are heavier in comparison, but they're not a slow shoe by any means. The upper tho doesn't offer much lockdown, it's fairly loose. This makes them a comfier, roomy shoe... and it's why i like them as an everyday walking shoe. They are great for casual runs and great for post run recovery, so new runners will love them. Good grip, better than the Saucony IMO. They do wear pretty quickly tho... every shoe I've had in the Boost range the sole wears after a few months... tho the foam doesn't. The only Boost shoe that I didn't find this with was the Ultra Boost All Terrain... tho they were a tad heavy for running. Saucony Speed 2 - Firmer foam, more spread out and feels more steady. Built for pace, SUPER light. They feel more secure front to back and feel tighter when laced up offering better foot lock. There's less foot movement inside them compared to Ultra Boost 19/20. If not laced up proper tho, i felt the heel was quite loose, so be careful of that. I use all the lace holes for better fit and made sure they were tightly laced up. They WILL make you run fast and you can feel them less stable when you slow down or get fatigued. If new to them, you'll notice straight away that your pace from the very start is fast, so be careful not to tire yourself out at the start of your runs. I love that they help you maintain the same pace and you know when you've slowed down as they don't offer the same response or bounce. Those looking for PBs will like them. Post run I get a little tightness around my knee and ankles, so if you have injuries be mindful of this... but could just be me coming from the Ultra Boost back shoe cushioning. I keep my thigh compression on after to aid recovery. Hope this helps anybody deciding between the two foams as it's hard to find comparisons. Speed 2 is the more technical running shoe IMO. The Ultra Boost is dead centre of everyday fashion walking shoe and comfy running shoe. It's like walking on marshmallows. If you want something that's got a bit of both, the Nike Pegasus range might suit you.

What a load of crap. A new runner would be absolutely fine in these shoes… it’s all about comfort and slowly building mileage - nothing about “advanced shoes”. What are your feet special because you ran some more that makes you “handle” these “special” shoes. 😂 come on bro. Seriously.

QD: I bought the speed 2 and did my first workout in it yesterday. I think I’ll continue to use my speed 1 for easy runs and some long runs and keep the speed 2 for speed/tempo runs and maybe some shorter races. Once the speed 1 burns out I’ll just stick with the speed 2. I won’t buy the pro 2 yet. I’ll burn out my Pro 1 on some summer racing and buy the pro 2 for fall marathon.

I think your dad is on to something. He's definitely not the only one having problems with the recent trend of stiff, rockered and / or plated shoes. Rockered shoes have a place in your rotation if you're running a lot of miles and want to take some load off the lower legs. If you're not trying to put up new PBs, don't go for a plated shoe. There is a purpose they were designed for, and it's not daily training (despite everything the companies will tell you). If I was a new runner and had to choose one shoe for daily training, it would probably be a rather flexible, neutral shoe with decent toebox room and a stable platform. The ones that come to mind immediately are the Saucony Ride, Asics Cumulus, Brooks Ghost and New Balance Fresh Foam 1080. The Brooks, Asics and NB should be available in wide, too, in case your dad has a high volume foot / wants his toes to splay.

I wanted to asked a really dumb question. Without having any running stores in my area, I do all of my purchasing online with means lots of sizing and return. When you're talking about sizing you show your thumbs pushing down to show length. Are you thumsb on TOP of your tips or really showing the space from the end of them to the end of the shoe? You go with a true full thumb of space? I've come to realize I may have been running in shoes that are 1/2 size too short for quite awhile.

Hi Seth, I have the privilege to run th Chicago Marathon this october. It will be my first marathon ever, so excited. But as today, the must difficult decision is which shoes are the best bet for this race, considering i never run a full marathon before. My personal goal is just under 4 hours, around 8:50 to 9:00 a mile (not a fast runner😁). So the main question is: Should I consider a carbon plated or non plated running shoe? Any suggestion is going to be GREATLY APPRICIATTED! Right now my best shoe is Endorphin Speed, but only run in the up to 17 miles. I love them, but noy shure if they are a right shoe for a full marathon

I’m running Chicago as well and going through the EXACT same dilemma (same pace!). I have the Speed 1s and use them for interval days, but really didn’t like them at slower pace long runs, including marathon pace. I could see them as a great half race say shoe. I’ve been training a bit in the Hoka Mach 4s for normal runs and they might work for marathon day-light weight with lots of support and cushion (my best marathon times were all in Cliftons). I plan to try the NovaBlast 2s when they come out as well for easy days.

Not too sad I bought a second pair of Speed 1s recently after that review. I do love the colourway though. It’s a very marmite thing but I’m in the love camp. The guy at my local running shop said they’re expecting the Speed 1 to come down in price in the coming months by about 20-25%. He said that’s standard for Saucony (as seen recently with Kinvara 11 and Pro 1 which dropped by about that much). If I can get the speed 1 for like $130, I’ll opt to get those. If no price decrease, I’ll go for the 2. My hope is it comes down to $130-140 and I’ll grab two: one to train in, one to race in. It’s a great shoe.

I usually cap it on running shoes at $130 but I may be willing to splurg on myself and pay the $160. I plan to run my 1st marathon in September of next year in the Surf City Marathon out here in California. Currently my race pace is 10 minutes a mile and that's for a 5K. I may run my 1st marathon in the Hoka Mach 4 or my Clifton 7 and just opt for the cush and forget about the time since I am a jogger anyway. Good chance my pace will be 11 min/mile and a 4:50 marathon 1st time out. What do you think Seth? Will the Endorphin Speed 2 make me a faster kitty cat and still keep me comfortable.

I think they can improve this shoe by making the heel counter more accommodating for the Achilles and also ever so slightly widening the base of the shoe along the inside to give it a slight increase in stability when your planting that foot at speedier pace. Great review, coming from the Speed 1's (over 1000km) I'm a little disappointed with the Speed 2's tbh (25km so far) The best improvement for me is the laces, they're not as long as in the 1's and seem to bind together better. The ride so far feels a little firmer in the 2's and the lockdown doesn't feel as snug, this could be down to the roomier toe box? I prefer a really snug fit for my narrow feet (size10) The 2's also seem to feel a bit chunkier and the colourways are a bit dodgy 😊 - They also absorb a lot of water in the wet, way more than in the 1's which made them soggy and uncomfortable (perhaps due to its increased breathability on the upper) Anyway the long of the short is I've just spent another £140 on a pair of Speed 1's in my favourite Colourway - cue sense of relief 😅 - The Speed 2 is definitely is not a bad running shoe in fact its a very good responsive shoe only I prefer the 1 a lot more.
