I think you don't understand the difference between cultural upbringing as a Muslim, and being a Muslim by choice. The abuses she suffered will make her view Islam in a negative light. There are lots of raised Muslims who become non practicing because of social trauma inflicted by other Muslims and in extreme cases end up leaving Islam.

I had a girl with the same situation as this, luckily not an OF account, but she went the way of the subjective morality of Western society, after I became a Muslim ( from a Christian background ) I read the Qu'ran, Sunnah, the biography of the prophet (SAW) and all the other holy books before I became Muslim. She was an'' ex '' Muslim herself, she doesn't identify as a Muslim, while her family is. Her dad wasn't in the picture anymore, wasn't a good husband or father to the family. I told her it's not Islam that does damage, it was the people and this case her own dad. Also, most of these '' ex '' Muslims can't even recite Al Fatihah, even babies can recite this when they are 4 years old and you will never forget this even if you stopped doing Salah. The people that '' leave '' Islam, never even read the Qu'ran or the Sunnah, they will only listen to the bad things that aren't even written in the Qu'ran or Sunnah. May Allah (SWT) guide everyone to the right path brothers and sisters.

I'm born as muslim in Asia. Because lack of knowledge of my own religion, I had my rebel time, even though at that time I'm wearing hijab, I didn't pray 5 times a day. I let myself fed into feminism propaganda, support the alphabet, etc. I had thoughts that make me asking about islam, Aisha ra's marriage is one of them. But, a few months ago, youtube recommendation led me to some local da'wah which easy for me to understand. And now I try my best to do the good deeds, raise my kids, submit to Allah subhana huawata'ala, learn more about Islam and our beloved prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Everyone made mistakes and may Allah SWT give chances for Rahaf and all who are stray away to taubat.

Because of these actions, some non-Muslims in Canada have also become suspicious of her stories of family torture. They question how a girl can live like this if her life was really traumatic in such a short time.they said she is just a cheep attention seeker . Even though she has denounced Islam and her Arab identity, she still uses those things to grab attention, just like any other ex-Muslims. She has marketed herself in the West as an ex-Muslim Arab personality who was tortured for seeking freedom. If she didn't have an Islamic past, would anyone notice these people? No, because they lack real skills or virtues that would make them noticeable to others

Many Arabs nowadays are brought up westernised or admiring the western way of live, that's where they go on holidays and what they talk about and they want to be seen as educated and having travelled here or there, and religion for most is just tradition or culture, many of them follow just cos the parents do it and parents too cos their grandparents did and with the new generation, media and wealth from oil it's becoming more bad but alhamdulillah a lot of us still hold on to our religion and identity cos we know without it we are nothing and we have nothing, and currently some of the youths are waking up due to the hypocrisy of the west and turning back to islam, alhamdulillah. May Allah guide us all and protect us from that which he afflicted others and keep us all on the right path. Amin.

My frien I had similar issue.. Im a somalian man I used to be in somalia🇸🇴 8 years ago. I used to go to duqsi(Islamic school) and I was just beaten by mistaking or forgetting 1 ayah/ayat for the last 5 years. I always thought I was in the wrong but clearly it was the teacher. They put fear on children towards quran and leading them some to rebel it. But I had a strong will not to be broken and kept going and induring the beating, May allah guide them all.😞

What you said about parents needing to give their kids more time is absolutely correct. I used to work in clinical hypnosis and I had a client who had an issue with being clingy and always wanting to be affectionate in her relationships and thought it was because her mother abandoned the family when she was 5. But after digging deeper into her subconscious, we found it was because her father having raised her and her two brothers himself since his wife left while also working full time, she always wanted him to play with her and she never got that much. It wasn’t entirely her father’s fault as he was juggling a full time job and three kids all by himself. But as a child, she couldn’t understand that and it affected her with wanting love and affection. We’ll after a few sessions, she came to terms with that and now is doing much better. Basically, kids need attention and need love from their families. And the breakup of family values in western society really has caused far more harm than many realize.

This is a lesson to all Muslim parents. 1. Learn to separate what are cultural norms from Islamic teachings. Don't conflate the two. So your children understand the difference between the two. 2. Be balanced. Be principled where you MUST but compromised where you can. Don't say NO just for the sake of saying NO or just to show who's the boss. 3. Don't just IMPOSED but EDUCATE as well. Don't just tell your children to pray BUT also instill in them LOVE for Allah. Don't just tell your children not to drink BUT educate them about the whynots of it. Don't IMPOSE Islam but INSTILL Islam. 4. Educate YOURSELF. So when your children ask why this and why not that, you can readily answer them. Or at least listen to their queries and help them to find the answers to their questions. If you don't give them the answers they're looking for, they will just go to the internet and might just find all the wrong answers. 5. Lastly, may Allah guides us all. May Rahaf and all those who have gone off track be guided back to the right path, amiin.

Families need to do better to show women the rights they have in Islam. So they know and can see the rights they have. Or you easily fall prey to feminism. The asian community fails this alot of the time because of forced marriages, they don't teach people the rights they have so they associate it with the religion and hate the religion. People need to be better educated on their religion, but that doesn't happen in some countries because women don't get educations, so they can't even learn about their religion, because the men are stopping them from their rights. The suffragettes were fighting for equality after Islam already gave it to us.
