Went there yesterday for Sauger, started down near the beach, no luck, then went to the lower walk and waded into the water with 2oz lead spoon, no luck, and then went to the upper deck, no luck. Went to Meldahl and go my limit. Hope you have a great Sauger season sir.

You'd do better with lighter line and a light/medium light action rod.

Do you get snagged alot? I fish a similar dam but smaller and more current bigger rocks I'm snagged all the time..
@RegularDudeFishing
@RegularDudeFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, unfortunately that is a downfall of fishing close to the bottom.

Regular Dude Fishing This will be my first year sauger fishing.. like I said the spot in hitting is just like yours but a smaller damn,more current and bigger rocks.. Any suggestions.. I know it's kinda an open ended question but just looking for tips
@RegularDudeFishing
@RegularDudeFishing 6 жыл бұрын
I use a fast action (stiff) rod so I can feel the bottom or the rocks better, and I use the lightest jig head I can that will still reach the bottom, but not go too far into the rocks to get hung. Most of the time I use a 1/16 or 1/8 oz jig. I also try to get the wire hooks instead of steel hooks, sometimes they will bend so they come free instead of breaking the line. Hope that makes sense and helps a little brother.

Regular Dude Fishing Yep makes perfect sense. I'm gonna have to go bigger on the weight though the water is usually really flowing here.. what's your favorite colors?
@RegularDudeFishing
@RegularDudeFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Well it depends on the water, if it is clear I like silver glitter or white. If it a little muddy, yellow works for me here in my area.

Dude target a large game for food don't be killing so many little fish just to eat! Everytime I want fresh fish I go for big blues or Flathead no need in all the killing multiple fish.

Txn Tom that’s like sayin don’t eat chicken because it’s small, eat turkey. People catch and eat bluegill & crappie all the time too. Sure flathead makes some fine table fair but different species of fish taste differently. Not to mention they all make your poll bend 😉
@txntom2789

Jeff James I think your logic is flawed it's much more wasteful to bag limit 20-25 small fish vs one maybe two big ones and too it only takes a couple years fr good size cats the other hand those small ones are the same age too so you're not getting it really.
@Kinlow54
@Kinlow54 6 жыл бұрын
Normally, the smaller sauger are the males. It does nothing to the population to keep a limit of these. Keeping the big females is what affects the population. This is why in Ohio you can only keep one catfish over a particular length (channels, flatheads etc.). Also, if you are eating fish out of the Ohio river the smaller fish are less toxic with the various chemical pollutants. Big flatheads, channels, and blues are loaded with mercury, pcb's, farm fertilizers etc. Thus, the smaller the more healthy if you are eating Ohio River fish.

Txn Tom any professional catfisherman will tell you keep the medium sized ones. You do not want to keep bigger ones. You need to look up selective harvest
