Saurian Ambient Sound demonstration

Since the demo release, I've finally had time to do some work implementing Xico's beautiful soundscapes. The challenge, as given by Tom and Xico, was to place ambient sounds around the player randomly as they went around the world, but also to restrict certain types of sounds to specific regions of the map. I set a further goal for myself to make sure that the sound of water would change based on its depth. Since this system works and I have a lot of other work on my plate, this is probably the ambient sound system that will be in initial Early Access release -- however, down the road, I hope to make it much more rad.

The Mantis Shrimp I could imagine a lot of weird and mysterious easter eggs for the game, similar to the creature-stage in Spore. Like a crashed UFO or weird cave-paintings left by unknown creatures.

As an Australian, the fly noises would bother me a lot in the game. I felt they were pretty disctracting in this demo, would be good to maybe reduce the fly noise repitition.

I have another wierd question, two in fact. 1. Will there be diseases & injuries? You know, like... infected wound, broken limb / ribs, bacteria in a body of water with a carcass nearby, etc. 2. I know the animals / characters have to eat and drink and that there would be an option to track detecting smells. So.... will there be, well... dung? And all the things around it, like tracking prey, finding mates, marking territory and other things. And one non-weird question: Will the animals have to sleep?

Injuries will be present in some form or fashion, though I'm pretty sure the team is still establishing how specific that system will be and what kinds of injuries you can suffer. Diseases and infections won't be in-game though, since those happen more randomly and there's nothing a player can really do to prevent that from occurring or halt its effects. Dung is not going to be in the game in any form or fashion. Reptiles (birds included) generally don't use dung as extensively as mammals do for social and interspecies functions, plus a certain other game has already demonstrated to the developers how immaturely players tend to act when that mechanic is included, so... Scent related functions like tracking prey, finding mates, and establishing territories are going to involve pheromones as well as auditory signals. Sleep is currently being considered as being a save function. Many animals typically don't sleep very long, only a few minutes at a time over the course of maybe an hour or two, so while it'll probably be a necessity, you probably won't be forced to watch your dinosaur sleep for a half hour or something.

Thank you for answering! :-) Yeah, I think I read something about sleep in birds. If I remember it correctly, ducks sleep around 30 seconds - 2 minutes at once. Then the animal wakes up, considers the situation and then moves or sleeps again.

We'll see; it's certainly a bit more open to interpretation now in terms of _Where and how feathers?_ but it's not a slam dunk case. Either way, we'll have to wait until they get most of the game done before they go back and edit things like creature appearances.
