The horse section is how you know Brennan is a deep Lord of the Rings fan because it is a minor (but still very present point) in the books that Sauron steals the best horses from around Middle-earth and has to spend a lot of time selectively breeding and training them to be good steeds for the Nazgul because the horses instinctively fear the undead. Expensive horses indeed!
