Thank you for explaining de Saussure, still i don't understand what structuralism as a theory is or how is connected with him? If you could maybe give me a concrete example of structuralism,I'd be even more thankful!
@Thatoneguyinlitclass9 жыл бұрын
Structuralism (regardless of whether we're talking about philosophy, language, literature, whatever) is the idea that there is an underlying order to things in the world and that everything is part of a larger 'structure'. Structuralists try to find this order and explain it, as well as trying to explain the 'structure' that the order belongs to. Saussure focuses on language, trying to break down language into it's component parts, rather like how you would break down a puzzle into individual pieces so that you can study how they fit together to make the larger image. I hope that helps.

Theoretically any kind of relationship between humans can be examined with a structuralist viewpoint. Borrowing Saussure's ideas, Structuralism has been used in Anthropology, Sociology, etc.

Copied from a previous comment below: Structuralism (regardless of whether we're talking about philosophy, language, literature, whatever) is the idea that there is an underlying order to things in the world and that everything is part of a larger 'structure'. Structuralists try to find this order and explain it, as well as trying to explain the 'structure' that the order belongs to. YOU DID NOT MENTION PARADIgM IN YOUR EXPLANATION Syntagm and Paradigm Description Syntagm and paradigm govern how signs relate to one another. Syntagm A syntagmatic relationship is one where signs occur in sequence or parallel and operate together to create meaning. The sequential nature of language means that linguistic signs have syntagmatic relationships. Thus, for example, the letters in a word have syntagmatic relationship with one another, as do the words in a sentence or the objects in a picture Syntagmatic relationships are often governed by strict rules, such as spelling and grammar. They can also have less clear relationships, such as those of fashion and social meaning. Paradigm A paradigmatic relationship is one where an individual sign may be replaced by another. Thus, for example, individual letters have a paradigmatic relationship with other letters, as where one letter is used, another may replace it (albeit changing meaning). Letters and numbers do not have a paradigmatic relationship. Items on a menu have paradigmatic relationship when they are in the same group (starters, main course, sweet) as a choice is made. Courses have a sequential (syntagmatic) relationship, and thus an item from the starter menu does not have a paradigmatic relationship with the sweet menu. Paradigmatic relationships are typically associative, in that both items are in a single membership set.

I see semiotics versus semiology as similar to psychic versus psychological. The former terms are more general. Semiology studies semiotic topics as psychology studies psychic ones.

First time I hear someone say what I always thought: that a signified part is, in fact, a platonic form. Always made this connection but wasn't sure I was correct because I it just occurred to me only (well, now to you too). Can we say that Plato was a predecessor of Saussure in that respect? Was Plato the first semiologist?
@Thatoneguyinlitclass4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I would go that far; I mostly was just using as a convenient metaphor- but Plato clearly had some conception of the Seen and the Unseen, and how they were connected, so maybe in a sense!
