With the starting price of the Miata having doubled since it was introduced 30 years ago (29% above the price increase for its class, and 40% above the industry as a whole) it is slowly being turned into a niche vehicle when decades ago it was a car accessible to everybody. The same thing happened to the Mustang.

Banks/lenders are certainly more than happy to help someone commit financial suicide these days. Leasing or uber-long term loans (60, 72, 84 months...) are not only possible, but considered perfectly acceptable and encouraged in many circles. I do believe ultimately the individual is responsible for making that decision, but my goodness, we are surrounded by messaging that openly encourages debt, especially with the justification 'but interest rates are so low'. I think it really depends on the brand you’re buying from. The luxury brands are especially bad because they basically expect the people who buy their cars to want a new one within 3 years. Brands like Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai still offer plenty of affordable cars that with proper upkeep can and should last for 10-15 years at minimum.

That's the biggest flaw with this "green" nonsense. Creating a car itself is a hugely pollutant and energy rich process. It's like the classic mechanical watch vs. Apple watch debate. One will be worn for decades and cherished, while the other will be in a landfill in 2 years - no one wanting to be caught dead wearing it. I think the industry is going to get pushback, and the crooked politicians will be forced to roll back some of these mandates when they realize that not everyone wants an EV and cars languish on lots.

I feel you on this. I remember when my sister had an old Mercedes C230 Coupe. One day, I took it out on a windy hill-side road and decided to see what it would feel like to turn the traction control off. So I did, and the moment the rear tires broke loose and the rear-end came around, I thought I was going to die. I was able to get it back under control and immediately turned traction control back on. Now, I have an M340i, a car with well over double the power, and turning off the traction control doesn't feel scary. The car just sorts everything out if you lose the rear-end, and you're back on-line. It's strange how in roughly 20 years, our cars have gotten insanely powerful, but yet the drama has been completely drained from them. I guess manufacturers had to do that because people want more power in their cars, but they also want a car that isn't going to kill them as soon as they push it too hard.... And here we are today... with cars that have so many electronic nannies keeping us safe that even when you turn them all off, the car is still working to keep you safe. On one hand, I'm super happy that we have such insanely fast cars, but on the other hand, they don't feel special. That's a difficult thing for me to say because I absolutely adore my M340i. But is it the best driver's car I've ever owned? Unfortunately... no. That title goes to my 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback with a 2.0L 155 HP engine, which was not even close to fast, but each time I took a corner, I got the biggest grin on my face because of how rewarding it was to drive. It pains me to say that a nearly 400 HP BMW is "less fun" (in a corner) to drive than 155 HP Mazda. And I'll be completely honest. When my lease is up on my M340i, I might just choose to buy it. While it's not the most fun I've ever had in a car, it is an absolutely fantastic car and probably one of the last cars before the full-hybrid or EV revolution takes over. That fact actually makes it special in its own right. It's funny how that works...

You may think engine noise is cool and everything, especially because you're a kid, but the fate of the world is far, far more important than how exciting you think something is. The Porsche research is interesting, but I wouldn't put all your eggs into that basket because it's still in the conceptual/testing phase and we don't actually know if it'll pan out to be anything more than just an interesting concept. Electric's here now, it's proven reliable and that's what manufacturers are going with moving forward. When you buy your first car, don't be surprised if it has to be electric or a hybrid because, as I said, the car space will be very different. It may suck in your eyes, but like it or not, that's just how it is.

I have recently started my career as an automotive designer, and seeing the kind of requirements put forth by my clients, it pains me to see their lack of enthusiasm in the product, except for the business opportunity it presents. It saddens me and makes me think that I got into this a little too late. Let's hope that we can infuse at least a little bit of soul back into these creations by way of driving dynamics and physical interaction, just enough to prevent them from becoming no more engaging than washing machines. P.S. I still ride my 6-year old Royal Enfield Classic 350 (carbureted); no fuel injection, no ECU, no ABS, no Traction Control. It rides as fast as you're willing, and only as well as you can. Great choice. +1 for the 10th gen Si, I have 2020 as well. My mentality when I bought the Si was that it was a stepping stone to a Type R or similar top level sport compact. But given how things have been going lately, I'm thinking more about keeping the Si long term (what a great daily driver--all kinds of fun and zero guilt piling on the miles) and instead getting something else on the side as my next purchase as a project/fun car--while you can still get in to something at a reasonable price. But I'm going to start with taking the Si out to an HPDE to understand the limitations of the platform and better understand what I might be looking for to augment in the future. Hoping to keep stuff like that going as long as I can but with all the computer chips it will be harder and harder. Then we will move from leasing to just all ubering and no one owning cars, self driving cars that pick you up and take you out then bring you home. That’s the ultimate future sadly

I’d make the argument that people just want more and more features along with the desire for bigger vehicles, not really that the cars themselves are getting that much more expensive. A decently equipped 2021 Mazda3, Civic, or Corolla is light years ahead and very comparable in size to a 2005 Honda Accord, yet their original MSRPs are still comparable. Now you get a standard full safety suite, dual zone automatic climate control, a nice infotainment, and what would’ve been luxury car refinement back in 2005. Nowadays, everyone wants HUDs, 25” infotainment screens, cooled seats, nicer leather, pano sunroofs, 20” wheels, and 360 cameras, in the form of a 3 Row SUV or Pick Up truck.

A Civic or Corolla of 25 years ago was smaller than a modern Accent or Versa, similarly powered (low, by modern standards), and with an interior of similar quality. Even so, the modern cars will be safer, more efficient, and have infotainment features previously inimagined. They will likely last just as long and be about as reliable. OK, they won't be as fin to drive as the best late-90s cars, but a Corolla or Escort of that era wasn't any fun, either.

@@alh06 Sigh. Electric cars are generally better for the environment (one might argue that bicycles and public transit would be entirely better, but people want to have cars), they don't produce tailpipe emissions, if they produce emissions at the power station, it's easier to scrub emissions at a handful of power stations than it is to scrub emissions for millions of individual cars - power plant combined cycle turbines are also far more thermally efficient than IC car engines, so EVs result in lesser fuel consumption as a result of charging, than ICEV's from driving. Current battery production methods are not ideal, but the drastically better driving emissions of EVs offset the environmental damages incurred from battery supply/production, here in Canada we literally strip-mine most of our oil out of a massive open-pit mine, so I really fail to see how strip mining for battery minerals is much worse. EVs also don't do typical localized pollution like leaking tainted motor oil and toxic fuel into storm drains and waterways, they don't produce the low frequency engine noise pollution that scares off local fauna, and they don't emit shitloads of NOx and particulate emissions that passively poison the air. So, yes, they are better for the environment. If you hate EV's for emotional reasons, then just come out and say that, rather than drumming up myths to rationalize your opinions.

I understand how you feel. I was a kid in high school in the early '80's - when inflation was high, gas prices were the highest in history (even accounting for inflation) and we were still in the midst of what is referred to as "the malaise era" where most of the cars being produced were GARBAGE. We were all looking back at the awesome muscle cars of the late '60's early '70's thinking "Man... we'll NEVER see horsepower like THAT again!". The '82 Mustang GT with a 5.0 V8 - marketed as "The Boss is Back!" - made a whopping 157 HP! LOL!!! I was just hoping that MAYBE someday, someone would produce an affordable car that made 200 HP again. That didn't happen until I was college in 1986 when the Mustang GT was rated at exactly 200 HP - and that went to 225 HP the following year... and it's been onward and upward from there ever since... until now. We've reached the pinnacle of internal combustion and now we're all facing an EV future - and eventually autonomous cars that you don't even drive! Screw that. I'll hang on to my '12 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe (with a proper MANUAL transmission, thanks) as long as I possible can.

I have thought the same exact thing. We saw this happen in the industry I work in (computers) as well. The soul is being sucked out for streamlined and highly-integrated utilities. I got really into automotive in 2018 after watching all of Initial D (yes you can laugh at me). I decided I want to get myself a performance car. I didn't know how to drive a manual, so I borrowed a 1999 Ford Escort ZX from my brother to learn on. I took it out driving every day after work. After about 6 months, I went out and bought a 2019 Civic Type R. I still own it, and I plan on keeping it forever, but I noticed right away just how much the game had changed. I actually felt safe in my Type R.. but I also felt more disconnected. The Escort was a death trap, but it was also connected and fun. The immediacy of the throttle made it feel like a roller coaster at times. The Type R doesn't have that. I missed the manual hand brake. I missed the light-weight feel of the Escort. I saw the trend immediately as I entered the modern world of enthusiast automotive and it is sad to see how it is progressing. The soul is leaving.

Newest car I own is 2007 WRX, most engaging to drive is a modified 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 (2 door mazda protege). Forever project car is 1986 RX7 GXL. Planned obsolescence and quality control has gotten worse as corporations want to have their hands in everything, and crunch numbers instead of engage with and invest in the community created by their cars. So my plan is to enjoy what I already have to the fullest, and fix them myself. It's difficult to find parts locally for my 1998 and 1986, but Rock Auto has a nice thing going. Got a fully loaded timing and seal kit, the alignment tool for my Ford, and even came with instructions. Using and maintaining old cars is what will make the difference. Show them what stands the test of time, not the current trend. Why should I buy a newer, heavier, number car that is not reasonably maintainable with thousands of additional failure points? Complexity, luxury, features have been sold to us. Just give me a double DIN and I'll install what I want later. Prices go up as proprietary features are added that they can't even support LOL. I question the sustainability of their trajectory. Want a basic reliable car affordable to the average person? Try the used car market. New cars are for those who have money, and aren't really that much more efficient or reliable in design. Mostly manufacturing became efficient at supporting all the new complexity and experimentation. Now you need a pay a mechanic and a computer programmer to fix your car. It's the quirky but reliable and maintainable cars that I will continue to support, and the manufacturers and companies that decide to design for maintainence done by owners. Simple, but modular designs need to come back. Simplify and add lightness tho, right? Saves on wear and tear along with momentum in accidents. New heavy cars cause more damage to the things they hit too. Turbos are for power, not economy. More parts, more weight. Direct injection is also a bit of a scam if you don't know how to keep it clean. So many controls, not enough freedom. #learningtobesavage #mywordsarefree

This is exactly why I picked up a STI last year. The -- not to overuse the term -- visceral and raw nature of that older power train is so much fun and tangible. I have seen Mr. Geese's take on the STI platform here and I get that it is an old platform and isn't for everybody. For me, the AWD, all-weather capabilities married with the rawness of the experience and the retention of knobs and physical controls for the head unit and HVAC make it a great experience. I do wish that I didn't have to get rid of my 2001 Integra GS-R Sedan (god, I loved that MT and the high revs), but space dictated one vehicle. I don't know how a 170hp and low torque four banger can be so much fun, but the B18C1 was a joy to operate. I was also starting to run into the parts issue for the Integra and living in the mid-Atlantic, the corrosion factor was not kind to a 19 year old daily driven vehicle. @@brulaapgaapmeester8234 More than a fair few of those that are killed by traffic could also have been saved by just making sure that people driving are driving fucking properly. Better education, better enforcement, make it as difficult to get a license as it *should* be to pilot a ton and a half of various materials at 60+mph. Instead licenses get handed out like they're in cereal boxes, at least here in the States. Funny thing is I've had my license for a relatively short time in the grand scheme of things, about 2015 or so IIRC, and I had to go in front of a judge (along with other people getting their license) to hear him go on about how "driving is not a right, its a privilege that can be revoked if necessary". Yet it certainly doesn't get treated that way. The real problem here is not that people *can't* drive (because in that case they shouldn't hold a license in the first place), but people don't *care* to drive properly, and nothing gets done about it. The cost of cars is actually surprisingly stable when adjusting for inflation. We're getting hit with increasing costs for housing, healthcare, and education that are outpacing inflation. The thing that isn't keeping up is wages. Being squeezed makes it very hard to decide to have a 'play' car.
@williamlevy19813 жыл бұрын
Democrat politicians have been pushing for minimum wage increases because they know INFLATION would expose their decision making. (Spend more than they collect, continue to borrow & print money that doesn't exist). So on paper you received a raise. But because of inflation thanks to irresponsible politicians, the "raise" had little to no effect. It's a SCAM.

Yep. It drives me nuts when I see the "Fun cars are too expensive now" argument. Fun cars have ALWAYS been expensive. I bought my 2000 Civic Si new for $17,500 in the year 2000. Adjusted for inflation it would cost over $27,000 in 2021. Today MSRP for a new Civic Si is right around $25,000.

@@williamlevy1981 not really. I believe we in America should at least move our budget into more moral things such as Healthcare and Wages, instead of wasting more than 52% of Our Budget on the military.

@@williamlevy1981 hate to break it to you but the Federal Reserve is an apolitical organization with members appointed by both parties. Their goal is inflation, it's the only way the US maintains its currency monopoly and the ability to service our debt. Don't miss the forest for the trees.

@@williamlevy1981 inflation happens naturally, it has since forever. The US aims for ~1.7% (I think) per year, so a minimum wage should rise alongside the cost of living

My brothers and I were coming into driving age in the early 2000s. It worked out well enough for us middle class kids. Between the three of us, over the course of about 5 years, we had a 1970 AMC Javelin, an 84 Camaro Z28, a 93 Trans Am 6 speed, a 94 Formula 6 speed, an 89 and a 90 Probe GT turbo. Our friends mostly had Fox bodies and Camaros, with some imports and other muscle cars mixed in. Early 2000s we’re definitely some fun times for car enthusiasts of all ages and means.

Thanks for these sit down chats you do. Tulips in Holland. In the long tunnel of time, only mechanically built cars will stay classic. The newer cars whether you like it or not have no true longevity and that makes this whole recent vintage collectible trend a massive bubble. Tulips in Holland.

Imagine having an underground garage and buying a brand new gt2, gt-r, LC500, challenger rt scat pack wide body manual 6.4l, some fancy pancy sports Nissan, a Land Cruiser 79 series still built a new, and a last of its kind Lotus / Ariel and never even touching them for 15 years. Then in 2036 you can sell each one of them virginly untouched for millions.

Great video! I just recently bought a fully loaded used 2018 Mazda 3 GT hatch 2.5L 6 speed manual with barely any miles on it and I'm absolutely in love with it. In the past, I've owned a classic Miata, a few different BMW 3s, and right before this a manual Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L and this newer Mazda 3 is such a blast to drive. I'm so glad I found something that was practical while also fulfilling my enthusiast and amateur mechanic side. I lucked out and got the car right before the worst price hikes, so I didn't get totally ripped off. Im glad I get one more shot at a small and quick manual driving experience before EVs and automated cars become the norm, something I'm not very excited about.
