I had a Volvo 780 (Bertone Coupe) and now have a BMWi3S Rex, so *really* like the Polestar 1 - The crease over the rear arches is pure P1800, great design
@gordonmccracken1209 Жыл бұрын
I have owned a Volvo 780 Bertone but always felt Volvo's Constant Track Live Rear Axle was better than the IRS fitted to the 780 Bertones. There is an article circulating online as of recent explaining why SAAB chose to use a live rear axle w/ the 9000 despite all the other Type 4 platform variants using an Independent Rear Suspension. The main gist being the live rear axle being more predictable when reaching the limits of adhesion which made sense in Sweden due to road conditions/weather.
@richardsellers8671 Жыл бұрын
Not wishing to argue, but it's in NO way like an i3, which has an ICE ONLY as a generator. Not only that but the Polestar drives the rear wheels via TWO electric motors (i3 is one) and the engine drives the front wheels. You could possibly make a case for being a bit like the i8, but that's ICE rear wheels and electric front wheels.

The shape reminds me of the C70 Coupe from the late 1990’s… 5 years ago, I watched the development of this car on the Polestar KZbin channel. Absolutely fantastic series of videos. That "Hold" mode makes SO much sense. While I was watching the introduction, I was actually wondering about if any hybrid vehicles have this function. I would think that driving along at a consistent speed on the motorway or autobahn, the ICE is very efficient. And you don't want to deplete the battery and then have to use it in town. As someone with I guess the prototype of this car, a V60 D6 From way back (2014). I feel quite happy knowing mr Harris approves of this hybrid setup! It's a car I thought was stupid until I test drove it, much like this day to day waft about in electric then a 5 clyinder diesel with more power than a safety wagon needs. Surprised to find myself agreeing with everything said about the driving with my old Bangor version... I use the drive modes the same way. Tend to keep electric for town and do find myself gulping down fuel to charge it up at times, one thing that seems odd though, here you've mentioned when the battery runs out its just fwd, assuming it's like the older setup the isg should keep enough power to the electric motor so in awd/power you'll always have that extra kick at the expensive of fuel guzzling! 10 years ago volvo was ahead of its time. OK 31 miles range isn't much, but at the time most phevs had 8 to 20 miles at best. If I had 150k spare I'd of ordered one of these!

I just don't get hybrid- when you in electric mode you're lugging around engine, fuel etc, and when you in engine mode you're lugging around electric motors, batteries. Just too much dead weight all the time. I'm sticking with petrol unless electric cars become affordable and second hand battery life question is answered, hybrid just makes no sense (well maybe unless you're in 'everything' mode, but that implies you're booting it and I bet the electric bit doesn't last long when you do that.

@@K1lostream Chris explains it perfectly in the video you can have an electric city car so you’re not spewing out co2 in everyone’s faces in town and you can also have a conventional ICE car when you want to go a longer distance. I have been in many hybrids and everything mode doesn’t imply you’re booting it, you just drive it like a normal car and it chooses between petrol electric or both. A proper hybrid like this is a power plant that you have to say, don’t bash it until you try it. And by try it - like Chris says - it’s not just a test drive you have to live with it for a bit before you understand (this isn’t meant to be patronising) this hybrid is one of the best because it can go 80+ miles in EV mode which is more than enough for most people and then when you’re getting into rural areas you can boot up the petrol engine without feeling guilty about pollution so you now have a car that has none of the disadvantages of an EV and doesn’t pollute cities. I understand the disdain towards hybrids because most of them can only go 15 or so miles on a charge which makes them a bit redundant but one like this is the perfect all round car for a lot of people because its 2 cars in 1.

@@lbnewell23 Well put, and I do understand what you're saying but for the reasons I mentioned, hybrid still seems like a fudge to me. Weight is EVERYTHING in terms of pollution and for my two cents I'm gonna go with one or the other while they are most affordable and practical- having both on board seems like the worst of both worlds rather than the best. The biggest pollution problem modern cars pose is they're too damn heavy and they require recently extracted resources- my bet for the least polluting cars overall would be the Cuban jalopies that have been kept running since the 1950's.

Just got 2020 S60 T8 Polestar and it is a nice car. Same interior as in PS1 as well as brakes and Öhlins. It is a bit sleeper tho 😅 It takes forever to warm up and you cant see the engine temperature for some reason. But once the engine is warm it really pushes the 2 ton weight like a madman. Uphill pedal to the metal feels really nice. Also it got B&W and comfy ride in general. Interior quality is a lot better even compared to the G30 BMW 530 we got. Here it cost 58 000€ tho. But considering it only have 12 000km driven it felt a lot better option than M340i 2019 which cost 80 000€ here... And that would be 70 000km driven. Here the T8 PS cost less than 330e 😂 In many countries it cost 340/M3 level.

This is the exact sort of new engineering solution that works perfectly in today's driving environment. I don't think the average car buyer necessarily wants a 2.0l four cylinder + hybrid combo like this, but it offers that peace of mind that you do not get from the current charging network. A car with a pure electric range of 80 miles/130 kilometers? It can charge itself? It can make over 600hp in the right setting? This is exactly what automakers should be priortizing. It's not like the small four cylinder engine is a big polluter...although it still does pollute somewhat. But new ICE engines are so damn efficient that it makes perfect sense to do this kind of combination. I scoffed when Mercedes had the gall to do a four cylinder E63, but it will be a brilliant car. They simply need to let the name die off, that's all. But this wave hybrid cars with proper full electric range will be a comfortable solution that can easily take us well into the future.

Before Volvo bought Polestar in 2015, they themselves were acquired by a Chinese conglomerate called Geely in 2010. And this car is built in China. Take that for what you will. Another point. The engine does not make 400 HP. Volvo has not released the power figures for the ICE, but they have stated that the electric motors provide a total of 300 HP with overall power figure at 600 HP.
@adhsmith1601 Жыл бұрын
Polestar has released the power for the ICE, same as the Volvos, 309bhp, not unsurprising, but Polestar add the CISG to it I guess perhaps not quite accurate, but still quick. I included the specs link but it was deleted, easily found with a search of 'polestar 1 erad'

The most surprising thing about the car is that they managed to sell one! The sceptic in me sees an 8 year old Volvo interior and the weight of an XC90 being pulled along by a 4 pot driving the front wheels at times but … the exterior is truly stunning, the proportions are perfect. If they had knocked that out for £75k, the order books would have been full and you would probably not feel quite so special. Great review of a very rare and interesting car.
@jclouw321 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you somewhat, but you REALLY need to see one in person to appreciate the craftsmanship on display. It’s not simply an “XC90” interior. Yes there’s design elements that are similar, it is a Volvo of course, but the Polestar takes it up 2 notches in terms of fit/finish and style. Plus there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a classic Volvo interior in a coupe. Nobody complains when BMW Makes an M6 coupe that uses the same interior as a base 5 series for the most part but costs 3-4x as much. That on top of the sheer engineering that’s gone into the Polestar, it’s easy to see where the money went. You simply could not recreate it at $75k; the Carbon Fiber monocoque chassis puts it beyond that price point.
@stephencollins7714 Жыл бұрын
@@jclouw321 I was being a little unkind about the interior and only going by appearance, I am sure that polestar have enhanced it but even so, it looks like a bit of a lazy effort on a "bespoke" £150k car. I hear what you are saying about BMW et al but they are high volume car manufacturers enjoying economies of scale so they have a better justification. The carbon tub is a nonsense on a 2.5 ton car, what they have done here is is to produce an amazing engineering prototype and then have the balls to sell it and I wholeheartedly approve. I agree that they could not sell them for £75k but that does not justify £150k, clearly the vast majority agree as nobody is buying them but I would not bet against it being a sound investment. I seem to recall that BMW were struggling to sell the Z8 when new and look at that now ....

I’ve been fortunate enough at this point in my life to be able to buy a Polestar and with it being my first brand new car (I usually always buy the previous years model) I’ve absolutely loved it. My neighbor has a Tesla Model S as well as a built twin turbo C7 and I’m clearly biased but I think the Polestar is exponentially better. The twin charged engine is outstanding and for its weight, it corners substantially better and flatter than you would expect. I’ve taken it to Palmer Motorsports track (it’s about an hour from me) and had a blast in it.

That's not true though. You need to look at both sides of the argument. They aren't perfect by any means but they are going in a much better direction than ICE cars. It's up to people to choose what works best for them at the moment. Some people like ICE, others like EVS. Chris likes a bit of both.

@@pato10111 people believe electric cars are zero emission but the reality is you export the emissions to the place where the minerals were mined. For one 1000 lb battery you need to dig up 500,000 lb of material. You need to use 100-300 barrels of oil to create one car battery with the equivalent energy of 1 barrel of oil. Just manufacturing one battery creates a carbon debt rate of 10-40 tonnes of CO2. There isn’t even enough minerals in the world to be carbon neutral by the supposed goal of 2035. The ultimate light bulb is that the people running the show don’t care about “climate change” it isn’t about that at all, the reason is a lot more sinister

@@Truthgoesonliving none of those facts are correct and nobody believes that electric cars are zero emission.
