There is a really insightful reddit post that highlights how much cost cutting they did to this X3 generation. Here is a list of what happened: 1 - Comfort access is gone on rear doors 2 - Tailpipes gone from 30 models 3 - Ambient lights gone from rear doors 4 - Ambient lights are gone from door pockets 5 - C pillar is plastic and used to be leatherette 6 - Door tops and dash plastic or fabric 7 - Door handles and buttons went from metal to plastic 8 - The door grabs plastic. The funny thing is that the front is gloss, and the back and rear are plastic. The actual window controls are plastic now. 9 - MSport steering wheel airbag cover plastic 10 - The lower dash used to be rubberized, material now plastic 11 - Footrest and trunk scuff plates went from metal to plastic 12 - The sunroof doesn’t open. it's now a panoramic roof

The first generation X3 (I still own one) used a ton of low grade plastic that did not age well. Combined with fake wood and plastic tactile buttons that wore and stuck often. It has almost no technology at all PLUS cheap materials. Despite those pit falls the first generation x3 essentially changed the auto industry specifically with SUV’s. At the time when it came out most said it was ugly, especially men it appeared- top gear gave it a super low rating and said it was hideous. Little did they know how much impact it would have on all SUV’s to come. The first generation came out September 2003. Over 20 years later almost every automaker has copied. My point is BMW has taken risks with this new generation, much like they did with the original generation, but I have a feeling it will be highly successful.

For most people, the point of owning an expensive luxury vehicle, apart from its engineering, drivability, and the latest tech it offers, is being able to admire its beauty every day and wanting to be seen in it. However, this is not one of those vehicles!

Thanks for doing an actual car review for normal people versus the gimmicky marketing videos (stuffing toys in glove boxes) that are floating around, or conversely, the highly technical videos that I sometimes use for bedtime.

Which one, the Pre LCI, Pre ID7? Or the Pre LCI ID7, or the LCI. I think the LCI looks frumpy and the interior with ID7 looks just as frumpy. ID7 is night and day compared to what the OG G01 X3 had, but its dash integration was NOT great!

I have not seen this in person yet, but other reviews are saying that there is way too much interior plastic...even in this uplevel trim. And with this being in the $70k range, too much plastic is not good...not even having reachable handles to fold down the rear seats...come on. And the tech seems to just have too many things buried. It's just not usable while driving. Certainly, getting things set just the way you like them up front helps, but modifying them will require you to pull off the road to avoid hurting yourself or someone else. How does this make a touchscreen any better than a haptic touchpad?

I really do not understand the appeal of luxury vehicles that make basic tasks a hassle. I want something that just works. The boomers who can actually afford these cars will be confused, I just don't understand who this is for.

I am almost a Boomer (gen-x by two years), I will not be confused by it. I will still hate it, but I won't be confused by it. Then again, I am an engineer. I will also never pay this much for an SUV. We keep one SUV around for specific needs like hauling supplies for Home Depot or camping trips. But in general, if I am looking for a BMW, I want a performance sedan. And sadly, despite having many BWWs in the past, I will probably never buy anything newer than an F80 M3 .

I think the previous 5 series was the pick of interior design and usability from BMW. Everything was in place, a lot of physical knobs and buttons for every function, great materials, fit and finish was perfect. These new era BMWs feel cheap, feel like Chinese car, even driving dynamics are not as good any more, especially handling...

So they have massively cheapened the material quality both inside and out. Increased the price. Made it uglier. Uses the same hybrid B58 system from the 240 and 340. You can't even option the B&W audio system, and somehow this is now a 50? and its increased in price to $75 grand? What a piece of shit. Get the previous gen for 2/3 to half the price depending on mileage. They even are watching you on a camera now to sell your data, and I bet you still have to pay a monthly subscription to the BMW app to access its features such as remote start etc when they are making money off you already without you even knowing it. This is ass.

Another option to consider, for the same money you can get a Porsche Macan T....with Analog gauges, a 1 layer Infotainment system, almost no driver safety aids, and steering, braking, handling and power-train that is almost beyond legendary. Sometimes you just pay more to get less of what you "might" need and more of what you "really" want in a driving experience.

As always great review and thanks for getting this out early in the model cycle, even if I'm not in the market. Bought one of the last previous gen X3M40i's. Perhaps waiting for the next model would have been smart, but just don't like the new ergonomics - giant screen, no HVAC buttons, gear shift "switch" etc. I don't hate the new car, but that interior leaves a lot to be desired. I'm sure the new one handles better, but honestly, I'll never use all that the 2024 has, and the extra 10 hp is negligible. 👍

Nice job boys.. I have a previous gen X3 M40i and I think its the best in class for the segment. I'm lukewarm on the new interior/exterior design at first glance. I lament the darth of physical buttons. I know the complex systems of today require touch controls for most things, but I wish manufacturers would recognize that most of us want the basic HVAC and audio controls to be physical buttons that are easily pressed via memory, without having to look down at a screen.
