I replaced my 2013 Land Cruiser this summer. I put money down to get on the GX 550 waitlist at a local dealer. I didn’t even bother getting on a list for the new Land Cruiser because dealers wanted $10k over MSRP. Land Cruiser has always been an expensive SUV compared to competitors. Looking at the old ones compared to modern models, they may look bare bones, but don’t mistake that for bare bones at the time they were new. My family had a US version FJ60 (1984) and it was considered very nice compared to Ram Charger, Suburbans, GMC Jimmys , Isuzu Troopers, and very comparable to the Wagoneer. 1984 sticker price was about $15k, which translates to nearly $50k in 2024 dollars. Add 40 yrs of us regulations and requirements, today’s price is just about the same.
@TassieLorenzoАй бұрын
@@danielrogers4072 Exactly. Even the 70 series Land Cruiser, which is basically an updated 40 year old car, retails for $75,600 to $87,600 AUD (51,700 to 60,000 USD) in Australia. Toyota 4-wheel-drives command a premium both new and used -- why, because they can. They are entitled to make a profit -- people can buy a cheaper used Land Rover Discovery if they want (there are good reasons that Land Rovers depreciate a lot more than Toyota 4x4s)! Sadly the V8 turbo diesel version of the latest facelift 70 series was only offered for 2023 but has now been discontinued due to emissions. Only the inline-four turbo diesel is available now. We drove several new Land Cruisers and not buying it came down to what you get for the money. Even the 1958 was going to be $60k. That's a hard pill to swallow when you compare with basically any other comparably priced SUV. I wanted the 1958 because it's clearly a simplified enthusiast model ready for modding, and heck yea it has great cloth seats. We also weren't convinced about the long term reliability of the drivetrain yet. Every one we drove was super clunky coming to a stop when the hybrid system was doing it's thing. On the highway there was a lot of road noise from the near vertical windscreen. I read in the forums lots of people reporting lower MPG than expected. Why bother with a hybrid if it still gets 20 mpg with way more mechanical complexity? The appeal of a Land Cruiser to me is something that looks good long term and also is durable long term. Driving this back to back with a 4runner TRD Pro, the LC is way more refined for on road driving. We stayed with our 2 year old Honda Passport Trailsport that has way better on road dynamics, simple NA V6 that is ancient and reliable as heck, and a much more reasonable price. And yes, we can still get to campsites and trailheads that we would have used the LC for, no problem.

Savagegeese - consider doing a video of where Toyota is going as a company. Help us understand the decision to put the 4 cycl turbo on everything (and why Honda hasn't) and dropping the V8 for the 6 cyl TTB. Seems like other than the 4Runner (of which the next gen is already in the doorway) and the Rav4, all their vehicles have had new generations in the last couple of years and nobody is saying the initial quality experience is better than before. They do not have an offering that has 5 years history of rock solid reliability on the powertrain. Then there is the debacle of the V6 twin turbo failure due to metal shavings, the new Tacoma transmission problems, recall (and suspension of sales) of the GH and TX due to side airbag. Not to mention lack of supply of certain models (Sienna) and notorious dealer mark ups. I'm in the market for a new mid-sized SUV in the Oklahoma City metro area and only 20 listings pop up (with 17 not having pictures which likely means they have not been delivered yet). How should we as a consumer view a potential Toyota purchase vs the other manufacturers. It used to be, buy Toyota, have peace of mind. Doesn't feel that way any longer.

The old engines aren't powerful, even with boost, but they last. My FJ I've owned since new and it still has no oil leaks. None. That and the fact that all I've done is routine maintenance since 08 is more impressive than any dashboard tech and turbo/hybrid horsepower and torque numbers. Something important to note on how this 1958 trim drives on the road, including its limits. The 1958 comes on quite narrow tires for this kind of vehicle; 245 width. All other trims come on 265 width. They practically invented a new tire size for this trim. They know you're just gonna take off these tires anyway and put whatever you want on, so they minimized the tire expense on the front end. Virtually any 4Runner since 2001 or so has been on 265 width tires. If you buy a 1958 trim Land Cruiser 250, take these tires off. Even if you just want to drive it on the street, proper 265 width tires will drive much better and have substantially more grip.

I had a 2003 LC for a few years, but it was overkill for my needs and its horrible fuel economy (12 mpg) made it easy to trade it out. Yes, it was built like a tank, supremely comfortable and reliable, but those traits you can find in many other far more efficient vehicles. The old LCs were something of a "status symbol" in the US----the very definition of luxury is being wealthy enough to have an LC , but not *need* an LC. Nobody took them off road; the first time they tasted dirt was when they were 12 years old and shipped off to a 3rd world country. So, imho, this is a little confusing: it *does not* fit into the market space it occupied here for 25 years (G-Wagen, Defender V8, 'Slade/Denali, new QX80 have that well covered), however the "I don't go off road, but I want to look like I do" market is probably large enough to move a few. The problem is the powertrain is not robust enough to do hard work; the old one had the same engine as a Tundra so you technically could tow a battleship with it, this new one does not have that capability headroom. So, no "prestige" buyer, no "I do real work" buyer, you only left with the Jeep crowd.
